Modest Mouse – The Good Times Are Killing Me Lyrics 7 years ago
@[SydBaresIt:18337] The album is Good News for People Who Love Bad News much deeper than that, 2 key songs are Ocean Breathes Salty, which is why expect an afterlife, why dont live this one - if you wasted this one, will waste the afterlife? and Bury Me with it, which is about Human kind being self-destructive - (not drugs), Violence, Climate Change, Economic disparity. They write very methaphorically

More.
Violence:
We were shooting at the stars.
But the kids were just shooting at the busses and the cars.

Economic /losing employment

Well the suit got tight and it split at the seams.
But I kept it out of habit and I kept it really clean.
But if it's getting' faded, if it's runnin' outta thread,

Also, this couples with Ocean Breathes Salty as no life but this - Bury Me with It

This is a political lyric (and I am sorry I didn't read all prior comments if already mentioned)
And the frozen nature of any progress, and how we human race are "toast" - the following verses point this out

Well we moved to the left and moved to the right.
And sure as hell we stayed out almost every single night.
But if the party's over, if the fun has to end,
could you do this for me my friend?

We are hummingbirds who are just not willing to move.
And there's good news for people who love bad news.

Talks about Apocalypse - which with Trump looks sorta likely ...

Well sure as planets come, I know that they end.
And if I'm here when that happens, will you promise me this my friend?

Please bury me with it!
I just don't need none of that Mad Max bullshit.

Then ultimately it's like F'it -we went through all this - trying for the best, and got paid -- that was it?? On surface, looks like talking about band/rock n roll journey but the metaphor is WE ARE TOAST...(see the Climate Change allusion)

So don't drink the water, don't you breathe the air.
.....

Well the point was fast but it was too blunt to miss.
Life handed us a paycheck, we said, "We worked harder than this!"

Steely Dan – Home At Last Lyrics 8 years ago
Becker and Fagen have said it is about feeling Homesick in LA for NYC.

I think it on the sorta straightforward-level, or metaphorically, comparing cities to woman - the 'siren of LA. - and loosing out on the deeply fulfilling girl of NYC.

They pose guy who is afraid of commitment, can't resist "the sirens" and like Odysseus - better stay tied to the mask of the ship so he doesn't crash the rocks in their temptation.

This really comes 'home' in the verse - She serves me smooth retsina: "She is really great" I will call in my reservation "Hey, I always have 'reservations' - I will pull the plug/looking for grass is greener."

"this is what I always do" It's been good my friend, try my luck again.....

Death Cab for Cutie – Soul Meets Body Lyrics 9 years ago
@[Dysfunctional_:3381] I agree! I think it is they have a history, long one and they keep finding there way back to each other. Lots false starts but the narrator is saying end of day, "it is us"....I think Soul meets Body to the former comments: Narrator feels there is both the physical chemistry/heat AND a soul connection - BUT they finally need to work things out

lol...Never say Never:

Fagan did go back to Bard 16 years later, in 1985, to accept an honory doctorate.

yes, G. Gordn Liddy orchestrated the Watergate break-in. He was wound very tight. Portrayed in a film holding is hand over a candle flame.

Concur! Very nice story and take on the song. I like how Robert Hunter's lyrics have such specific images, hold so well on that 'surface level' but have so much metaphor and undercurrent. Oh, wait, I think I am describing Poetry :-)...not all song lyrics are poetic. Hunter's sure are!! And again nice prose, my brother or sista!

Yes – To Be Over Lyrics 11 years ago
The title "To be Over" ...this seems to be about a relationship ending and other doors opening...

Carrying closer go gently
Holding doors will open every way
You wander true pathways away

After all your soul will still surrender
After all don't doubt your part
Be ready to be loved

I picked "interpretation" 'cause any good lyric/poem has meaning to the listener - there isn't a hard/fast meaning. True, Royal Scam has criminals and I think the Jewel Thief might be accurate at one level. But really it is more than that -- I think cbmira01on July 08, 2007 - is right except the POV changes to the woman for "I don't Mind"...Like he is at a big Hollywood party just gawking at Anne Hathaway or Charlize Theron and she gives a look..."I don't mind"

The National – Val Jester Lyrics 11 years ago
Love this song, and found the posts insightful...my comment s wouldn't be relevant to the meaning of the song but:

You should've looked after her better
You should've looked after her more

Is almost word-for-word from Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) speech in the car to Charlie(Rod Stieger) in the 1955/56? classic "On The Waterfront" .."You was my Brother, Charlie - you shoulda looked after me a little better, you shoulda looked after me a little more"

Again, could be coincidence but this struck me.

Wolf Parade – Yulia Lyrics 12 years ago
He is making a parallell with the imprisoned, beautiful but somewhat corrpupt, Yulia Tymoshenko:

Yulia Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko (Ukrainian: Юлія Володимирівна Тимошенко, pronounced [ˈjulijɑ ʋɔlɔˈdɪmɪriʋnɑ tɪmɔˈʃɛnkɔ]), née Grigyan[4][5] (Ukrainian: Ґріґян),[6] born 27 November 1960, is a Ukrainian politician. She was the Prime Minister of Ukraine from 24 January to 8 September 2005, and again from 18 December 2007 to 4 March 2010.[7][8] She placed third in Forbes Magazine's List of The World's 100 Most Powerful Women 2005.[9] Tymoshenko is the leader of the All-Ukrainian Union "Fatherland" party and the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc.

She has been a practising economist and academic. Prior to her political career, Yulia Tymoshenko was a successful but controversial businesswoman in the gas industry, becoming by some estimates one of the richest people in the country. Before becoming Ukraine's first female Prime Minister in 2005,[10] Tymoshenko co-led the Orange Revolution.[11]

Tymoshenko was a candidate in the Ukrainian presidential elections of 2010,[12] but lost this election to Viktor Yanukovych (Tymoshenko received 45.47% of the votes in the second and final round[13] of this election[14][15]). At first Tymoshenko challenged the election results, claiming the vote was rigged,[16][17] but withdrew her appeal on 20 February 2010, stating, "It became clear that the court is not out to establish the truth".[18]

Since May 2010 a number of criminal cases have been opened against Tymoshenko.[19] On 11 October 2011, a Ukrainian court sentenced Tymoshenko to seven years in prison after she was found guilty of abuse of office when brokering the 2009 gas deal with Russia.[20] The conviction is seen as "justice being applied selectively under political motivation" by the European Union and other international organizations.[21]

Tymoshenko is currently being held in prison in Kharkiv region and was on hunger strike from 20 April 2012 until 9 May 2012.[22][23][24]

Talking Heads – Slippery People Lyrics 12 years ago
This is about taking pause at what can be considered "the crazy person" ...concurrently about the artists in society: musicians, actors, sculptors, painters poets etc....but maybe not necessarily even those who have those pursuits - maybe just sensitive people who feel deeply and usually have experienced deep physiological pain; and the tendency for those of this ilk to: 1) Act Silly - non-sensical (Manic) -

"Walk lightly!
Think of a time.
You'd best believe
This think is real"

or 2) go to dark places and engage self destructive behavior:

"Put away that gun",
the bathtub metaphor of ones life completeing being out of control:

remember when
Sittin' in the tub
Pulled out the plug
The water was runnin' out

The "Slippery People" - these are folks for whom deep emotions slip off them with ease but are around Artists/Sensitive people and can at least "defend" or provide a barrier to the masses and/or I can read these are Agents/Mangers/"handlers" that keep things going for more successful artists. There are many religious allusions as was pointed out but I do not believe that is the crux of this amazing song. Religious delusions are frequent in the Mentally Ill.

The real Crux:

Cool down
Stop acting crazy
They're gonna leave
And we'll be on our own <-- we Artists/"Crazies" need Slippery People
****************************
These slippery people
help us understand <-- we need Slippery People

what's the matter with him? He's alright!
I see his face The lord won't mind
Don't play no games He's alright <-- Slippery People "defending" Artists/Crazies against the masses
