The Smiths – Asleep Lyrics 12 years ago
This song gets me thinking about suicide and people who have committed suicide in this life. Personally, I do not know of anyone in my own life who was sunk so low as to merit an early grave, and I'm extremely thankful for that.

Anyway, for me, this song deals with suicide. Just view the lyrics especially:

"Don't try to wake me in the morning 'cos I will be gone/Deep in the cell of my heart I really want/will feel so glad to go".

The narrator is so fed up with life that he feels the need to die.

"There is another/better world. There must be. Well, there must be..."

Again, this is a direct reference to suicide, in my view.

Whenever I listen to this song, I think of two people. They are Ian Curtis, the lead singer of the Post-Punk band 'Joy Division', who committed suicide by hanging himself in his kitchen in May 1980. Tragic loss, as he was a fine frontman and totally deserves the iconic (cult) status he now has. Also ironic in that Morrissey comes from Manchester, just as Curtis did. The other person is myself. I have been as low as you can do, in terms of severe depression. I know what it's like to want to die, end it all and, believe me, it is NOT a pleasant place to find oneself at all!! All things considered, it really is not hard to relate to this song at all.

A magnificant piece of songwriting here.

The Rolling Stones – Waiting On A Friend Lyrics 12 years ago
The lyrics to this song pretty much dictate themselves really, such is the beauty of music! The narrator is 'standing in a doorway/trying to make some sense'. Moreover, he's 'not waiting on a lady', he is 'just waiting on a friend', as the lyrics dictate.

Absolutely stunning song, in my view. Reminds me of myself and some of my closest friends, as it is meant to do, no doubt.

Coldplay – Paradise Lyrics 12 years ago
This song reminds me of a College (lady) friend of mine. Everytime I hear or listen to it, it brings a smile to my face because I immediately think of her. Long story short here, she is a country girl; I'm a born and bred City boy and she came up to the city to study in College. In relation to the song though, is it the 'Paradise' she was looking for/expected because leaving your country home to study in the city can be 'heavy', as Chris Martin states ('Life goes on/It gets so heavy').

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird Lyrics 12 years ago
For me, this song reminds me of the relationship between myself and my mother. She worries so much about me almost all of the time. Also, I have no problem in saying that I "seek the world"; such a traveller at heart!! My mam isn't the best traveller when it comes to flying, so it's a real kick in the teeth for her.

"I must be travelling on now, 'cause there's too many places I've got to see".

Me, I can relate to this line sooooo much. My mam must accept that, one day, whether she likes it or not, she is going to have to let me go and do the things and see the things that I want to do and see.

Me being an only child doesn't help, I suppose... but that's my two cents for this amazing song.

Any only child should recognise the lyrics of this song here. For me, many's the time that my mam and I have sat and talked like that. An amazing song and one that I can seriously relate to.

Temple of the Dog – Hunger Strike Lyrics 12 years ago
For me, this song talks about the Hunger Strikers in the Maze Prison in Northern Ireland in 1981.

"I can't feed off the powerless when my cup's already overfilled".

I interpret this as a nod to Margaret Thatcher, the British PM at the time. Thatcher's cup, or agenda, is overfilled by protests against her and her handling of the strike. The 'powerless' are obviously the hunger-strikers, in particular Bobby Sands.

"Blood is on the table, the fire's cooking. They're farming babies, while the slaves are working".

This line is about life in the Maze Prison. 'Blood is on the table' because the prison guards are mistreating the prisoners. The fire is cooking because the nation is disgusted by all of this. 'They're farming babies' is a nod to the nurses in the prison's hospital wing; they are farming babies because the hunger strikers have become so weak, so they must nurse them like babies. 'While the slaves are working' is a reference to the public and how the people of Northern Ireland felt like slaves under British rule... the slaves are working to end the hunger strike and change Thatcher's stance and unite Northern Ireland with Ireland.

It's a pretty 'heavy' interpretation... but that's what this song means for me.

If anyone wants to learn more about the Hunger Strikes of 1981, check out the film 'Hunger', starring Michael Fassbender as Bobby Sands, and directed by Steve McQueen.

Deep Purple – Smoke on the Water Lyrics 12 years ago
Basically, we all know what the song is about, right??

Too many people commenting on the riff... stop wasting space!!!

Anyway, for me, this song reminds me of the Gleneagle Hotel... which is in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. Normally, I would visit there every New Years to celebrate the New Year. However, for the past two years now, that hasn't happened.

The song reminds me of myself and all the friends I've made while visiting the Gleneagle over the years. Seriously, we used to just wreck the place!!!! Being the youths that we were, it's only natural. Anyway, that's what this song is about, for me. Just my opinion.

The Police – Walking On The Moon Lyrics 12 years ago
I have a very personal interpretation for this track. Basically, at the minute, I am working with a woman to whom I'm quite attracted. However, she doesn't feel the same, so I've got to move on and forget about her. However, that's easier said than done. Just two weeks ago, I happened to be in work and this song came on the radio and got me thinking of the girl in question and my feelings for her.

"Giant steps are what you take, walking on the Moon".

I'm taking giant risks and walking on thin ice at the same time because I'm in love with this woman and I also have to work with her.

"I hope my legs don't break, walking on the Moon".

Pretty self-explanatory, I hope my heart doesn't break by being in love with her.

"We could walk forever/be together, walking on the Moon".

If I were to win her heart, there's nothing I wouldn't do for her. She would make me so happy.

"Some may say, I'm wishing my days away, no way".

Some people know of my feelings for her and tell me to 'keep dreaming', but "tomorrow's another day", as Sting says.

"Keep it up".

Even though I accept that I may never get to be with her, I will 'keep it up', as Sting informs. Basically, here he is saying that 'a man can dream.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Under the Bridge Lyrics 12 years ago
This song means an awful lot to me, particularly in the last couple of years. Just last week, I finally got my place in College; it was a lifelong dream of mine. However, I am not the most confident of people and things ie. school and exams to get you to College got me down to easily.

Due to all of this, I felt very suicidal and lonely and lost in the world; I felt that I had nobody on earth to turn to and that nobody cared how I was feeling. One day, I just happened to be listening to my iPod and this song clicked for me.

Basically, the line:

"Sometimes I feel like my only friend is the city I live in, the city of angels, lonely as I am, together we cry".

This line speaks to me because I compare my iPod to the 'city of angels', with the 'angels' being the songs stored on it. At times, my iPod is my only friend and means of escape. Also, I practically 'live' in my iPod, too, because it's never off!!

"I don't ever want to feel like I did that day".

I don't ever want to feel worried or suicidal about anything ever again; it's just not worth it, yet it happens with me so easily.

"Take me to the place I love, take me all the way".

Take me back home to my iPod as it's my means of escape from all the worries and pain in life.

Bit of an odd interpretation, I know, but that's just my opinion. In the heel of the hunt, music can save your life!!!
