Awolnation – Sail Lyrics 9 years ago
I didn’t take the ADD part so literally, I think it’s more about general self-deprecation and introspection.

I imagine it’s about a person who kind of inadvertently treats other people like shit and abuses those he loves (emotionally or otherwise), and he hates himself for it. He’s acting out of his own insecurities and feels inadequate for having hurt those he loves.

I take the ADD line as slightly tongue-in-cheek. I don’t doubt the narrator has ADD but I think he’s just kind of using it as a simple answer to other people, though he himself doesn’t know the true reason for his behavior.

Xiu Xiu – I Luv Abortion Lyrics 10 years ago
As much as Jamie likes to be provocative, I think the title is meant to be ironic...
Obviously he's very liberal and pro-choice, but he might be addressing the idea that pro-choice = pro-abortion, which isn't true.

Nobody *loves* abortion. No matter what the mother's beliefs, it's often a traumatic experience emotionally, especially at a young age.

The friend arighost mentioned had the abortion because she was only a teenager and knew she would be an unfit mother. Lots of women have found themselves in that same situation and it can be an extremely tough decision to make either way. The chorus is meant to be sarcastic, like "yeah, every day I'm reminded of a painful decision I had to make in my past, it's GREAT."

Jamie said this song was partially "a big FUCK YOU to the Right wing in America." I think that's the "FUCK YOU" he's talking about.

Rammstein – Ich Will Lyrics 10 years ago
When I first heard this song (yeeeears ago), I thought it was about what drives people, specifically young people, to commit crimes...The attention and recognition and whatnot...Since the video shows them robbing a bank and being literally rewarded for it I figured I was right.

I was pretty disappointed when Till and Paul said it was just about connecting with the audience during concerts. But I think the lyrics can be taken as a double-meaning - something Rammstein uses a lot, Du Hast being the most obvious example. In the metaphor here, they are the criminals while the audience represents the media and the general public.

Whenever there's a school shooting or similar crime, people are always quick to say it was done "for the attention". It pisses me off, because it's a very narrow-minded way of looking at things. Sure, people do things for attention all the time, but everyday "normal" people don't go around murdering people just to get attention. If such extreme measures are taken just for that purpose then there's other things to be considered.

As the lyrics also address, they don't just want to be "seen", or "to go down in applause", but also "heard", "understood." "In control."

I hate to bring up Columbine here, but I'm reminded of something Marilyn Manson said about the shooting. When asked what he'd say to the perpetrators, he said something like "I wouldn't say anything. I'd listen to what they had to say, because no one else did."

The parents of school shooters often say they had no idea their own child was suffering so much. All of these kids had problems - sometimes serious mental problems - and nobody would listen to them. Their families either wouldn't listen or didn't understand. They had no friends to open up to, or they didn't even feel able to open up to anyone. All that bottled-up depression and anger has to be let out some way.

In the same sense, why do bands like Rammstein make music and do the crazy shit they do? Yes, there's the obvious "attention" motive, but beneath the outrageousness of some of their antics there's an underlying message. They want to be understood, and for people to listen to what they have to say.

I'm not, in any way, justifying the actions of the people who commit these crimes. A lot of people go through far worse situations and turn out fine. That's where the question of mental stability comes in. At the same time, most people with mental or emotional disabilities aren't mass murderers. I think the song is saying the motivations behind such crimes can't be summed up by simply saying "they wanted attention" or "they're just crazy." There's so many other factors to be considered.

Holy shit that was long. Sorry if TL;DR, but I have always wanted to share my interpretation of this song. The video brings a level of complexity to the really simple lyrics, which is what makes it one of my favorite songs and music videos of all time. Watch all of Rammstein's other videos - almost all of them go along with the lyrics, they're not just random unrelated images to go with the song, so I'm pretty sure they did the video that way on purpose. Or I could be just rambling and looking way too deep into it because it's 2:30 in the morning. idk.

Xiu Xiu – In Lust You Can Hear The Axe Fall Lyrics 10 years ago
I think it's about someone who allows themself to be abused and taken advantage of just to please their sadistic lover.

The first stanza shows how he deliberately inflicts pain on her, but she still starves herself, ("93 pounds"), cuts herself and otherwise attempts to make herself more appealing and worthy of his love. Either that or he forces her to do these things and she complies in her desperate need to please him.

The "pear" line could mean she gets sick ("discolored") from eating food - a result of starving herself. Pears also symbolize the womb in some cultures, so that could have something to do with it.

He refers to her as "passive as a toilet", meaning she lets herself be shit all over, so to speak. It could also be pretty literal (evidenced by the next line), Xiu Xiu is no stranger to sexual deviancy.

The "crush a pastry/ashtray into your breast" lines baffle me though.

Xiu Xiu – Vulture Piano Lyrics 10 years ago
At first I thought the lyrics were aimed at a rapist, like an angry letter towards the rapist of a family member or something...But I think it's actually about the loss of virginity. Perhaps sex between children, on a more grotesque level. I seems like a Xiu Xiu-y topic.

"a deep lack of guilt and
a fools sense of love"
They're kids and thus not ashamed of their sexuality, with no true concept of 'love'.

"greased and unclean" referring to sexual fluids.
"a boyhood slipping in blood" - they're both virgins; her hymen breaks, and "boyhood" shows he's not a "man" yet.

The title makes me think of the piano monsters from Mario 64. Random, but I know Jamie's into Nintendo so it's not too far-fetched. Not sure how it connects to the subject matter though.

Xiu Xiu – Buzz Saw Lyrics 10 years ago
I think it's about liking someone way out of your league so to speak, and feeling really stupid about it. Not necessarily unrequited love, just the perception thereof.

"Daniella" may or may not return his feelings, but he feels unworthy of her attention. He's too shy to approach her so he just convinces himself she doesn't love him and beats himself up over it, as seen in the second verse...

Your black hair is like black hair
Mine I promise is a jerk's hair
Your acne is like a pearl
Mine I swear is a brimstone

They both have acne, but while her imperfections are beautiful to him, his are just more reasons for her to not like him.

Panic! at the Disco – Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off Lyrics 10 years ago
Sounds like his girlfriend cheating on him and him being all butt-hurt about it.

I think the chorus is a kind of ironic way of addressing how the music industry uses trite love songs to cash in on naive, hormonal teenagers (testosterone boys/harlequin girls). Ironic in that the verses tell a story of how shitty love and relationships can turn out.

I also it's also criticizing the way teenagers (especially girls) give it up so early when it could potentially fuck up their life. For guys it's testosterone - wanting to feel manly and whatever. For girls it's the need to feel pretty and loved (as in a Harlequin romance novel), a lot of the time they allow themselves to be pressured into it.

The tone of the song just feels very mocking and cynical to me.

Swans – God Damn the Sun Lyrics 10 years ago
Pretty straightforward. Best friends drifting apart over time, developing their own problems. One of them is suddenly killed and the other is left to become cynical and depressed. With the loss of both their true love and best friend their life becomes desolate and meaningless, and they grow to hate everything.

The line "God damn anyone that says a kind word" really resonates. For some people, the pain of losing someone is so strong they outright refuse to be comforted. The grief becomes an addiction and they become bitter toward anyone who tries to help.

An amazing song. So haunting, and perfect for wallowing in misery.

CocoRosie – Not for Sale Lyrics 10 years ago
Yeah, pretty obviously about a prostitute, at least in the literal sense.

I like how it's clear that even though she's not for sale anymore, she's still "on the corner." She's still homeless and on the streets, but she's no longer allowing herself to be abused.

Xiu Xiu – Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl Lyrics 10 years ago
I get an intense pedophile vibe from this song, but I also see the "married man having an affair" interpretation too.

I thought the chorus was about the little girl - the victim - playing police officer. The "little car" being one of those toy cars little kids always drive (specifically I pictured one of these: http://tinyurl.com/qh54jj8). She's pretending to be a cop - "I like my gun" - and promises to protect the pedophile from being found out. It's pretty common for child molesters to convince their victims that they're friends so they'll keep the abuse secret. Thus "I am your girl and I will protect you."

In the second verse, the abuse has continued into the girl's teens and the pedophile is now married with children. She has finally realized she is being abused and will now break her silence.

To be fair though, this is a remake of Jamie's old band Ten In The Swear Jar's song Sad Girl, which is much more upbeat and "happy." Jamie could have just remade it to make it more Xiu Xiu-y thus stripping it down and making it more bleak-sounding, which could change the way it's interpreted.

I agree with the Jesus interpretation. Some of Anja's other songs make seeming references to Christ and specifically his death - Thanatos for example.

There is a picture of Anja sitting with her piano with what is clearly a Greek painting of the Theotokos on the wall. Maybe it's just art, but Austria is very Catholic so it's likely Anja was raised to be.

CocoRosie – Werewolf Lyrics 10 years ago
I also think it’s about their (specifically Bianca's) relationship with their father. The basics of Sierra and Bianca’s childhood are pretty well-documented but there are very few details. I’m pretty sure after their divorce Bianca lived with their dad in Hawaii while Sierra stayed with their mom in Iowa (where I'm from! Yay!). According to a New York Times article, they have 2 full brothers and at least 12 half-brothers, but they've only mentioned two specifically in their work - the older half-brother, Simon, whose suicide served as the inspiration for much of Ghosthorse and Stillborn, and a younger one who died sometime in infancy, mentioned in "Milkman."

But anyway, onto the actual interpretation. With 100 comments and all, this may have been said several times before, but I think it's about their (possibly mentally ill) father neglecting Bianca as a child in favor of her brothers. As a result, she turns to sex at a young age ("yearning song of flesh on flesh" - though this could also refer to Simon molesting her and Sierra as children) in order to fill the void of feeling unloved by him, and eventually runs away to become a drifter. She wants to "shake off" the memories of her childhood, but is unable to because of her attraction to men who look like her father, like the old Freudian concept. (Before anyone replies that Bianca is a lesbian, she actually identifies as queer, which is completely different, and she’s been involved with men before).

In the second verse she talks more in depth about her father and how they are alike. He also turned to empty relationships and meaningless sex after being heartbroken by their mother, like Bianca herself is now. It’s well-known that their father was really into Native American religion, so as a pagan he could have easily been labeled a “witch” or “black magic wielder” by outsiders.

She dreams of being happy, having all of her pain taken away. Werewolves are powerful creatures with no need for sadness or pain. She wants to be something stronger than her emotions. In the bridge Sierra sings about dreams of her lover whisking her away from all her troubles - I’m pretty sure the “live in his name” line refers to marriage. Bianca wants the ideal “picket fence” life but she knows it’s not possible because she’s so broken inside.

That’s just my take on it, sorry if it was TL;DR. I could be completely wrong, but it's always fun to try piecing together Sierra and Bianca's lives through their lyrics, it's like an investigation. This is one of my favorite songs ever, and definitely one of CocoRosie’s best.

Chelsea Wolfe – Widow Lyrics 10 years ago
As for my interpretation, I think Chelsea is describing different premonitions she had of her friend's accident before it happened.

A widow is a common symbol of loss and sadness, especially in dreams. The "bird circling above me" is presumably a crow, raven, or possibly vulture - all obvious indicators of death since they all circle their prey.

It's interesting to me to note that Chelsea is a Scorpio (born November 11), which is said to be the most psychic and intuitive astrological sign. I'm a Scorpio myself and I've had very strong intuitions about things either before they've happened or before I'm informed of it. It's quite possible Chelsea felt something bad was going to happen to her friend and saw all of these things as warnings.

CocoRosie – By Your Side Lyrics 11 years ago
I am sincerely shocked at the amount of people who think this is a sweet love song. One person on YouTube even said they would love it if a girl dedicated/sang it to him. It is most definitely NOT a love song, it's about a woman who wants to be married, so desperately that she'll marry anyone just so as not to be looked down upon.

Back in the day (and still to this day in some parts of the world) if a woman wasn't married by a certain age she was seen as irresponsible and not fufilling her duty as a woman, that is, staying home, raising children and doing housework.

Also, just because domestic abuse is mentioned in ONE LINE, that doesn't make the entire song about it. This is a hypothetical sort of song anyway. It's just saying that the woman would be willing to suffer abuse at the hands of her husband, just as long as she's actually married.

Maybe the people that interpret this as a love song just aren't very familiar with CocoRosie as people. The Casady sisters are extremely against traditional gender roles and the idea of gender as whole.

Acid Bath – Graveflower Lyrics 11 years ago
I think the poem from the track Old Skin was a rough version of this song...

"I feel every flower that is screaming to consume you,
The earth and sky your cradle, the earth and sky entomb you."

Then again lots of Acid Bath's songs have the same lyrics. Venus Blue also mentions a "pale thing" and Bleed Me An Ocean mentions humming blackness.

On the same note, Scream Of The Butterfly and Tranquilized both talk about fields of daisies and eating babies. And there's also the two similar lines "She felt it die/I heard her cry" and "She hides her tears and quickly lets it die".

I think all of their songs are somehow connected and form one coherent story, or they're all about the same thing. I can't believe nobody has ever mentioned this before.

Acid Bath – New Death Sensation Lyrics 11 years ago
The lines "lay this flesh to rest/let the pieces fall where they may" make me think of suicide. And "crisp black kiss upon my skull" = kiss of death, maybe?

"Flesh flowers dream to bloom", I'm guessing, refers to the desire to be dead and buried underground, like a seed made of flesh. Not sure how coherent that is in words, but it makes sense in my head.

For some reason the first two lines make me think of being buried and having the weight of six feet of dirt on top of you. But then that kind of contradicts itself...You wouldn't be able to see the sky if you're underground, and your eyes most likely wouldn't be open. But then again that could be the point. You're still alive (and thus still able to see the sky and your eyes are still open) but at the same time you feel dead. I don't know, I'm just rambling now.

The song is very depressing overall. The distorted guitars, the banging noises, and weird vocal effects all add to the mood.

Acid Bath – Dead Girl Lyrics 11 years ago
I had an epiphany the other day regarding this song...

"The sound of the ocean is dead, it's just the echo of the blood in your head" = conch shell. The sound heard when you put your ear up to a conch is really just the sound of blood rushing through your skull.

Great song, and amazing lyrics. Regarding the murdered groupie story, I heard somewhere that Dax later visited the murderer in jail and supposedly he helped write this song. Interesting theory, but I think symantec pretty much cleared everything up.

Corrosion Of Conformity – Mine Are The Eyes Of God Lyrics 11 years ago
"Taught to believe from the onset, of heaven and hell and between
The institution's retribution, damnation from on high"

Being brainwashed from birth to believe in God or burn in hell.

"Living and dying together never did nothing at all
Except for the few who got rich off of you
And the rest, they were herded like sheep"

Religion's messages of peace and unity being exploited as a money-making gimmick for preachers and telemarketers.

"The whole goddamn world is riding on words for thousands of years
It's just like the west, to think it knows best
When answers are subject to change"

People still believing in religion even though thousands of years worth of intellectual evolution has made it pretty much useless, and the west pushing its beliefs on other parts of the world.

"They took what could have been
And turned it upside down
They twisted all things seen
What's lost must now be found"

People twisting the Bible into their own words and misunderstanding the true meaning of things.

"Given the power of reason yet throwing it all to the wind
No solution in evolution, only the blood-stained glass"
Again with the evolution thing. Our brains are capable of amazing things, we are intellectually above believing in religion and yet people continue doing it.

And so on.

Corrosion Of Conformity – Albatross Lyrics 11 years ago
Somebody suggested the albatross was a metaphor for a free spirit - someone who lives outside of society and government. That makes sense to me. One species in particular, the wandering albatross, spends most of its life in flight. They only land to eat or breed, otherwise they're always flying, above everything else, not being told what to do.

I think the narrator is someone who has long conformed to society, looking at the albatross with admiration, wishing he could be as free-spirited as them.

"My home is kind, man it pays to be blind".
I think this is the narrator saying that his blind conformity has somewhat payed off by being given a good home by the government.

Corrosion Of Conformity – Seven Days Lyrics 11 years ago
Yeah, I think of Christ too, mostly because of the mention of spikes through hands and blood turning to wine.

I think it looks at Christ as more of a person rather than a religious figure. His thoughts about having to die for all of mankind even though he doesn't want to and they don't deserve it. His struggle to be perfect, to deny himself feelings that are considered sinful - such as anger and pride.

On another note, this song kicks ass. Easily my favorite off the amazing album, along with Albatross and Pearls Before Swine. I love the lyrics of the second chorus.

Her Name Is Calla – Pour More Oil Lyrics 11 years ago
The "aircraft out of control" line makes me think this is the final thoughts of a plane passenger right before it crashes. They think of their significant other: a wave of endorphins (sex), a cold shoulder (rejection), a mighty blow to the back of the skull (the impact of the plane).

Part of me thinks "aircraft out of control" is a metaphor for a state of mind, but I think I like it the more literal way, though I'm sure it's not meant to be taken literally, as most lyrics aren't.

Also, back in the day, people would sprinkle oil onto the heads of their guests as a sign of welcoming and blessings, so I'm sure that also has something to do with it.

After doing a bit of research I've come up with a different interpretation.

She mentions "Heartmill". At first glance it doesn't make much sense (English isn't her first language after all) but on the 'Spiracle' single, there is a song called 'Inter View', featuring a female artist called Heartmill. Heartmill has a last.fm page, and on it there is a picture of her and Anja together, along with a song, "Anja Ai", where Anja can clearly be heard singing with her. "Anja, I fell in love today." There's also a still of Anja's 'Disco' video from her website (the one with the pigs).

I could be jumping to conclusions, but it seems to me that the two are lovers and this is a love song about/to Heartmill. The lyrics seem very intimate and loving. It's very sweet :)

Lamb of God – Laid to Rest Lyrics 11 years ago
I've always liked the interpretation of the murder victim haunting his killer. I see it as the ghost of the victim guilt-tripping the murderer into suicide. Either that or the murderer is being tortured by memories of what he's done and is driven to suicide. Basically the same thing. I usually try not to take lyrics very literally, but it just makes sense for this song.

You're better off dead than to live the rest of your life as a murder, nobody would give a fuck if you died, etc. I'll never let you forget what you've done ("I'll chain you to the truth" and "bury you with honesty").

In the first and final lines, for me it's like the victim is saying if he could live to see the day murderer dies (suicide or otherwise) he would give up every other day of his life just to do so.

The Mountain Goats – No Children Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree with pretty much everyone else here. It's about a marriage that has deteriorated. Both of them know they can't just get a divorce, because they have children, and because they also know that in some sick, twisted way, they need each other. With that in mind, they realize that that the only way they can possibly escape their marriage is death. So basically they're just drifting miserably through life with each other, just waiting (and hoping) to die. (I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away, I hope I cut myself shaving, etc.)

Like a lot of people, I first saw this on Moral Orel and I don't think any other song could possibly describe the marriage portrayed in that show any better. Clay and Bloberta both know that their marriage is hopeless and that they hate each other, and it's so depressing its almost funny to them. Just like this song; on the surface the song is actually kind of funny, but there's an underlying sadness to it.

I'm fairly new to Soap&Skin, but I'm already completely in love with it, this song in particular. I don't know a lot about Anja (I don't think anyone really does), but she seems to be a very troubled person. She said in one interview that she was bullied very badly as a child in school, and I read somewhere that when she was young she would kill snails out of anger at one of her parents, but I'm not sure how true that is. I think this is a very personal song to Anja, about the cruelty she suffered at the hands of other children. If it's not that, it could very well be about the cruelty of children in general. People say children are innocent, but really they can be exceptionally cruel. They do it out of curiosity without realizing the damage they are doing, whether it be to animals or other people.

Soap&Skin – Thanatos Lyrics 12 years ago
Thanatos is Modern Greek for "death", but in Ancient Greek, "Thanatos" referred to a figure in mythology. While Hades was the god of death and the afterlife, Thanatos WAS death, personified. He usually stands for a peaceful, non-violent death, unlike Hades.

But even so, this song seems to be about a terrible, brutal death, given the way it's sung (and the creepy-ass music video). Also, am I the only one who sees references to Jesus' death here? "Tremor on my heaven, son. Tares above my kingdom come" seems to be an allusion to Jesus dying on the cross. And there's the "torn open tomb" line. I'm not saying this song is all about Jesus' death though, I think it's symbolizing something else.

CocoRosie – Smokey Taboo Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it's about a famous prostitute who, despite getting lots of money and fame for her "services", isn't truly happy because she's both physically and emotionally lost and far from home. "I'm a desert child, I like to look up at an infinite sky, etc" would thus be referring to her upbringing and childhood. The talk of getting depressed in fancy hotel rooms and whatnot should make it pretty obvious what it's about (and "Smokey Taboo" sounds like it would be an alias for a prostitute); she is interrupted from her work by the said "sirens in the street" - I'm pretty sure this is a reference to police sirens, given the illegality of prostitution in a lot of places. I think the first verse describes her status as a prostitute and her work, while the second talks about her memories and longing for home (and maybe past lovers, given the line "When we first, our kisses sparked".)

I interpret it to be about growing up and how you look at things differently in the process. She sings "I once fell in love with you, just because the sky turned from gray into blue", to show that she fell in love with someone before really knowing what kind of person they were, and the way that line is sung would make it seem like she either misses the innocence and naivety that she used to possess, or that she realizes how foolish it was. The line "I believe in Saint Nicholas, it's a different type of Santa Claus" says that she now knows the difference between fairy tales and reality, seeing as Saint Nicholas was a real person and Santa Claus is a (highly) fictionalized version of him. There seems to be a sound of mourning in the Casady sisters' voices when they sing this song, so I think it's about longing to be a kid again and to believe in fairy tales.

CocoRosie – God Has a Voice, She Speaks Through Me Lyrics 12 years ago
Am I the only one who thinks that this song isn't necessarily saying that God is female?
Me, I think it's a feminist commentary on religion's mistreatment of women (EXTREMIST religion, of course), and that it's actually saying "The only 'god' is me. I control my own existence and make my own choices, therefore I am my own god", and the "she" is there because it is told through a woman's point of view.

It tells a story about Muslim women on a beach. Even though they're at a beach, they're covered head to toe, wearing burqa/niqab. "Black bodies float in the sea" refers to the women wearing their black veils in the water. They can see everyone around them, but nobody can see them under their veils. ("We can see, but he can't see me")

"Kissing fireflies on the beach.
How sweet that we can be!
Everyone has love to give.
Hearts will teach us how to live."

This verse tells that while at the beach, they discover the beauty of nature and see that all life is beautiful and meaningful.

The next verse illustrates one of the women going into the deep end of the water, and how the water lifts her veil off from her head, thereby showing her both literally and symbolically taking off her veil and coming out of hiding.

Through this moment of enlightenment, it is then that the women realize that the ones who know what is best for them is themselves, hence "God has a voice, she speaks through me", and they decide to free themselves from the bounds of extreme religion and be their own gods.

The next verses describe the joy and freedom that these women feel, having all taken off their veils and becoming one with nature.

That's just my interpretation. But if you read the lyrics and watch the video, it should be obvious what it's about.

Also, I think it's titled "K-Hole" because it's comparing the afterlife to the K-Hole brought on by ketamine; i.e., it's perfect with nothing bad or evil in it.

This song is about dying.
The lyrics, I think, are the thoughts of a woman who is about to die, after going through (and doing) a lot of bad things in her life, such as drugs and abortions. She's thinking of what the afterlife, and she's happy because it'll be better than the life she has lived, which was ridden with sin and pain.
This is implied by the lyric "Tell my mother that I love her", and the references to Martin Luther and Mozart, whose requiems are often used to symbolize death.

Anyway, this is song is beautiful.
