This song is obviously growing up. We live in a world where we are forced to make choices quite fast and where we are expected to have plans from an early age onwards. This song comments about how hard it is to actually make a decision and that it is alright to not put pressure on yourself only because you don't know what to do yet. "When I was a young boy I was living for the moment The world was wide open I had every choice But with so many choices I just didn't know what to do now" This shows that our world offers us a lot of choices and that it is really hard to find out what you truely want to do. "All I say is just forget it If you tell me I'll regret it Just let it be what it is" Advice from other people is not neccessarily helpful if you don't know what you want to do - and it does not help to hear that we will regret something. "If I knew yesterday what I know today Where would I be tomorrow I won't let my soul slide away I'd do whatever it takes 'Cause this time's only borrowed" This line says that we should not think of what we did yesterday in order to find out what we will do tomorrow - it is not good to think too much about past events and to plan too long ahead in future. It's better to live the moment 'cause you never kknow when it will be over. "I got one life, one life, one life And I'm gonna live it I got one life, one life, one life And I'm gonna live it right" This is quite obvious - live your life. You only have one and you should not waste it with bothering yourself aboout what to do with the time you have. "My daddy sat me down He said "Son, it's probably time to start making some plans" And I said "No, not right now" With so many choices I just didn't know what to do now" This is almost the same line as before, but the emphasis now is more on the part that people expect you to have a plan and that a lot of them think that there is a "deadline" to decide what you want to do with your life. The young man obviously says that he doesn't want to make plans just yet as there are so many choices and he doesn't know what to do. "You say the more you think You know what's right The less you do What you feel inside So I won't pretend that I always know I just follow my heart wherever it goes And I may not always get it right But at least I'm living 'cause I've only got this…" This line is especially interesting. It says that a lot of people think about what is right and what is wrong and that they therefore decide not to follow their heart and don't do what they REALLY want to do. This is most likely because they are scared and want to stick to the plan they have made when they were younger. It's better to be honest to yourself and to follow your own heart. It's better to admit that you don't know what to do and that you will just live for the moment, even if it means that you make mistakes once in a while. You learn from them and you never waste your time if you are honest to yourself and do what you really want to do. You only live once and you should not waste your opportunities just because you have a "plan" you are nto really happy with. "When I'm an old man Hope I'll be rocking in my chair Smiling to myself I'll tell my baby girl You only got one life So make sure you live it right" The last line just tells us that it won't make you unhappy to not have a plan and to not stick to plans for your future. If you do what you really want to do and what your heart tells you instead of your brain, you will be happy as you look back on a life where you don't have to regret anything. I really like this song as nowadays we are forced to decide fast and to stick to our decisions. It is perfectly fine not to have a plan and to do what you feel like doing. It's better not to waste your time and your life just to live up to other people's expectations and to do the "right". |

| Well, nice thought, but as I am from Austria, I can tell you, that there was no concentration camp in Vienna - of course some things happened here as well, but the concentration camps were on the country side. | |
