Benjamin Francis Leftwich – Pictures Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is beautiful.
I agree with most of your analysis. The tone makes it sound like an atheist who is bitter about some people's willingness/eagerness to die simply because they believe they are going to a better place. As it goes on he slowly comes to terms with it. I completely disagree with you on the last verse though.

You've been around and you've seen
The way that things work

Still referencing the previous verse I think he's talking about a new generation. You have access to far more information than your parents ever did. Therefore you believe you have a better understanding of the "way that things work"

But you need a compass to,
Get around your house.

I immediately thought of a GPS. Your parents did things differently. They got around and learned what they know through completely different methods. Its a message of wisdom versus knowledge. You want to point out the flaws in your parents god because you think you know everything, but the truth is, your parents have another tier of comprehension of spirituality. They grew up with closely knit families and intimate interactions, not text messages and facebook. Basically god doesn't necessarily represent what you think it does, but as the previous post said, it is a concept to help people cope with stuff. It shouldn't be dismissed so trivially.

I think those verses are trying to say if you're a twenty something know-it-all, you're not as clever as you think you are. "Stop, don't do it. I've been waiting for it." If that person believes they're going somewhere as opposed to ceasing to exit, who are you to deny them that? Then again, they're leaving you so your beliefs create a rift between you. I think the song is about coming to terms with that concept, and finding a middle ground.
