Wow, I just realized that some posts are almost 10 years old. It's like going back in time!

Whether the writer of this awesome song is an atheist or not, I do not know, but surely you can write about God in a poetic sense without being a believer. It's about expressing yourself. I'm sure George Lucas doesn't actually believe in Jedis and wookies. ^^

However, I definately find a touch of atheism or at least skepticism towards religion in this song.

The Replacements – Answering Machine Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't think the song is specifically about an answering machine and trying to make contact with someone. I think it's more about just loneliness in general. "a handful of friends, one needs a match and one needs some ice" - Those are the only friends around for him, and anyone who has ever been lonely, whether it's been their entire life or just for one night should be able to understand the feeling.

Pavement – Summer Babe (Winter Version) Lyrics 12 years ago
I can't say I've ever had a clue what this song is about, but it sure is an awesome one.

Btw, after listening carefully i agree that it's: "you took 'em all"

I always thought it was: "I ain't lookin' forwar", as he is looking at the girl.

The Cure – Disintegration Lyrics 13 years ago
I wouldn't call this a break-up song. This is basically a song about desperation. How he's so depressed he can only feel alive through kicks like drugs:

"Through the eye of the needle
It's easier for me to get closer to heaven
Than ever feel whole again"

It's also about him leaving his family, rather than staying and making them watch him breaking apart, and maybe bring them down with him.
I agree that a party piece is something you do to liven up a party, and his party piece is obviously "letting go". The way i see it, letting go in this case is him taking his life. Thus the (blood) stains on the carpet. But the suicide part can be discussed. :)

The beginning of the song, like someone said, could be about him longing for sex with new women. Another way to get those temporary kicks. But I've always though it was about him missing the past and how it used to be.

Those are at least some of my thoughts.

Hauntingly beautiful, definitely one of the greatest songs ever made.
