The Tragically Hip – Membership Lyrics

@[vanceastro2:16586] This was my impression too, that it's about alcohol/alcoholism. the river extensively referenced in the lyrics is a river of alcohol. i think the membership is supposed to represent being a "member of the club of alcoholics/addicts", by familiarity with the river/road/path that is substance abuse. |

some people enjoy being alone. it's called being an introvert--which isn't a pathology, just a different way of being than extroverts. |

Tame Impala – Solitude Is Bliss Lyrics

being an introvert isn't pathological, though most extroverts seem to think that because they don't understand that some people aren't so insecure that they need someone else around to validate their existence at every moment. some people just dig being alone, because they actually enjoy their own company. |

some people are not terrified at the idea of spending time alone. in fact, some people prefer to be alone, at least some of the time. that's what this song is about. |

Erykah Badu – Turn Me Away (Get Munny) Lyrics

i'm suprised there are so few comments on this song, it's awesome.
it's obviously making fun of the sort of "women" (i use this term hesitantly as i am female myself and hate to have to be associated with this type) who use their bodies/sex to get men with money, because money is all they want out of life--the sort of women that set feminism back decades, if not centuries. it's a scathing (and hilarious) commentary on golddiggers and how they function, and how empty and sad they ultimately are. |

there is a dr who episode with a character named mr magpie, who is selling the souls/life-essence of britons to "the wire" through the tv. could this song be a reference to giving up/walking away from tv/the media? |

Frightened Rabbit – Acts of Man Lyrics

Just wanted to point out that, as a rape and abuse survivor, the message I got from this song was ultimately a positive one. Everyone is entitled to their own interpretation of music, that's what's so wonderful and democratic about the arts. But I think it is possible to overreact to what one interprets, and I think perhaps you might have done this. I don't think it's a reasonable assumption that the author believes it takes heroic effort not to be a rapist. Otherwise he would probably be writing his songs from prison.
And yes, I am female, and I have at times been cynical about what lies in the hearts of men. But never THAT cynical. |

Frightened Rabbit – Acts of Man Lyrics

Though the song begins with such dark and brutish words (appropriate I think, as it is touching on the nature of "Man"-kind) poignantly contrasted by being sung in a soft and even plaintive tone, it ends a beautiful redemptive anthem for all the men out there who are after all, as the song says, still "trying to improve." It pleads with us not to give up on them just yet.
Don't worry lads, we haven't ;) |

The Weepies – Hard to Please Lyrics

OK this could simply be me projecting (most song interpretations usually entail just that) but I get the feeling this song is about a parent that is hard to please, possibly emotionally absent or abusive. The lines "raising high a Dixie cup, don't put your hand down" struck me as references to church basement folding-chair group therapy/AA/NA meetings. Lots of people with parents that were "hard to please" find themselves in such meetings at one time or another. But it was "What is it worth to you to be a free someone? What would you do? Everything." in particular that gave me the impression of someone trying to break free from the oppressive criticism of an emotionally abusive parent. Like I said, could be all my own stuff but that's just how this one struck me. |

k i'm not scottish but I hear "snake heads, a red slitty kiss," "with a fire-hiss, this is the longest kiss," and also "bumble" rather than "fumble."
i adore this band for their frankness. when I first heard head rolls off three years ago i was hooked, and they've been in my top 5 favourite bands ever since. |

Sam Roberts – The Last Crusade Lyrics

an absolutely amazing new album from one of the best canadian bands out there today, and this song sets the perfect tone for it--irreverence and hope perfectly balanced in a rousing call to arms for all those who still hope to see humanity overcome the empty commercialism we are drowning in. i for one never fail to be inspired by these guys, and these days more than ever that kind of inspiration really is a rare and precious thing :) |

Wintersleep – Preservation Lyrics

my personal interpretation of this song is that he is speaking to a ?friend/girlfriend?, someone who has known some unhappiness in early life as apparently he has, grown up in challenging circumstances and is trying to find a way to drop what was bad and preserve what was good; trying to find themselves in an unfriendly world, fighting things like addiction (your daddy's shitty shake grass sounds like a pot reference to me, if i ever heard one lol) and the emptiness that plagues modern life (the many references to plastic coatings, freeze-drying, grocery lists and telephone bills, etc, evokes this simply but powerfully).
one of my favourite bands of all-time, and canadian! very proud of the excellent music that this country manages to produce--one of the few worthwhile contributions to the world that a nation can make that i think is worthy of being proud of. |

The Helio Sequence – Blood Bleeds Lyrics

could there be a connotation of family with "blood"? a sister is mentioned....and the way the song begins, almost reminiscent of someone leaving the family home for the first time, growing up, starting out on their own. bit of a stab in the dark with this song, but that's what came to my mind, anyway. |
