Brand New – You Won't Know Lyrics 12 years ago
Hey hey hey! Mr. Hangman,
Go get your rope

Your daughters weren't careful,
I fear that I am a slippery slope
Now even if I lay my head down at night
After a day I got perfectly right

She won't know...
She won't know...
She won't know...

So pray, little Kay, love's God on a good day.
And you can't blame your mother,
She's trying not to see you as her worst mistake
And I wish that I could tell you right now, that I love you
But it looks like I won't be around
So you won't know...

You won't know...
You won't know...
You won't know...

So believe in me,
Believe that you think I'll let you down
Well I won't
They can fire everything they've got
And when you think I'm sunk
I will float on and on
I have burned the bush that covered my light
And now I'm scared I won't burn that bright

But you won't know...
You won't know...
You won't know...

You're never going to feel as full as you felt
So let's go outside and we'll play William Tell
Take your time drawing your bead
I'll stand as still as you need
'Cause you're so good at talking smack,
You heart attack
But you're the apple of my eye anyway

My smiling face, it's on your plate, it's on a silver plate.

So they say,
They say in heaven
There's no husbands and wives
On the day that I show up
They'll be completely out
Of their forgiveness supplies
And I cant use the telephone
To tell you that I'm dead and gone
So you won't know

You won't know...
You won't know...
You won't know...

Some corrections, from the comic-book album-art with the handwritten lyrics:

"Do you remember the edges of October? Sofa surfing till we made the flight"

"an autumn collapsed and the borders convinced"

"the morning spraying shadows on the lawn, the colour kodak new"

"Well honey, you could cut diamonds on those lips, and that dress has sure stayed pristine"

"And it's not like I don't think they're true, but they've all got the same plot"

"Money shots on our own blog..."

and "outside your cold lips again" is wrong.

The line is actually "I'm outside and growing roots again"

The lyrics are 100% "be my babe" (not bait or bane or whatever else), and "be my serene, tell me you know what I mean". (not be my dream, or
It has both of those lines on the hand-written lyric sheet that came with the vinyl.

I agree, and good ear for the background bits. I always heard "You should increase the flood" instead though for the "greatest of love" parts. Might fit better with the themes in the song too, i.e the references to God starting over again: the flood, Noah's arc etc.

As for the meaning, it's pretty well documented here and elsewhere that the song is about Katie Flynn ('K' from the first line of the song) who was killed when the Limo she was in was hit head on by a drunk driver. She was 7 years old, and was returning from a wedding where she had been the flower girl.
Katie was decapitated in the crash, and her Mother held her daughter's head in her arms as the ambulances arrived.
The song is written form several perspectives: Katie's mother; the drunk-driver; and finally Jesse, as narrator.

Who the hell edited these lyrics? They were spot on before, now they are wrong in several places and written in terrible english.

Correct lyrics: (from old BN website, and lyric sheet that came with the vinyl)

'K', here's your ride
Get your petals out and lay them in the aisle
Pretend you are God, and grow
And that it's your day to wed
We have found your man
He is drinking up
He's all-American, and he'll drive
He has volunteered with grace to end your life
We'll tidy up
It's sad to hold, but leave your shell to us
You explode, you firefly, you tiny boat with oars
Feather oars
The world tilts back and pours and pours
And so, you satellite
You're a tidal wave
You’re a big surprise
And I've one more night to be your mother"

The signal interrupted
My baby's frequency not strong enough
Remain in my hands and smile

We will miss you but in time you'll get set up
And we will write

Hey, you beauty supreme
Yeah, you were right about me
But can I get myself out from underneath
This guilt that will crush me
In the choir, I saw our sad Messiah
He was bored and tired of my laments
He said, "I died for you one time, but never again"

Never again...

Well I love you so much
But do me a favor baby and don’t reply
Cause I can dish it out
But I can't take it

(repeat: 1234567)

background:
(We'll never have to buy adjacent plots of earth
We'll never have to rot together under the dirt
I'll never have to lose my baby in the crowd
I should be laughing right now)

No, the lyrics are correct. It has them on the lyric sheet that came with the vinyl LP. He just says 'turn' twice to make it fit with the rhythm:
"turn turn out hate in factories"

"Little cities names have ruined all the maps" perhaps?

Also, Brand New just added a t-shirt to their store with "We have neither the plans nor disguises" written on it. So that must be the line, not "been needing to brandish our disguises"

Brand New – Play Crack the Sky Lyrics 12 years ago
You're absolutely spot on with the reference to that song, and I have no idea how you managed to stumble across that without the back story.
However it has nothing at all to do with Jesse liking the song, or wanting it at his funeral or anything, actually the title is just intended to be a really obscure in-joke sort of thing. I've got a recording of one of his solo shows where he explains the story behind the title, I'll try and paraphrase it as best I can 'cause he goes off on a huge parallel story about it!
Basically, Jesse and John Nolan (of TBS) both went to christian school together, so John Nolan in particular was into a lot of christian metal. So he knew this Mylon LeFevre guy's band, whos only big 'hit' song was Crack the Sky. Jesse then goes on to say, when him and John had a band together in high school, they had a job working as stage-hands, for a christian group that toured round shopping centres etc and had musical performances and also people doing religious stuff, preaching to people or whatever. And in exchange for helping to set the stage up, they allowed Jesse and John's band to do a half hour set. But Jesse says he found it funny, because of all the 'bible thumpers' (Jesse's words, not mine... ha) nobody ever wanted to go near the stage, so the bands ended up just playing to nobody.

So, one time after they'd finished setting up, Jesse and John went out and just sat in the middle of this empty car park that the stage was in to see how funny it was watching the band playing to no one. And when the guy came on, John realised that he recognised the singer, and it was the Mylon LeFevre dude. Now Jesse explains that this guy had grown up, obviously grown out of his christian metal phase, and was clearly just trying to start over and, like, re-invent himself as a new musician/person even. Trying just to forget about the past stuff.
But John stands up, from the middle of the empty car park and shouts - just as the guy was stepping up to the mic - "Hey, play 'Crack the Sky!' ". Jesse says that you could just see the guy's spirit break, that the only person around in the whole place was someone who recognised him from his old life. Jesse says that for some reason, this was about the funniest thing he had ever witnessed.
So that's the story behind it! Ha. That's taken from one of Jesse Lacey's solo shows, in Jackson MS in 07 . I downloaded it all from somewhere if you want to find it, him telling the story is pretty funny, much better than my far too long written description =p

Goodbye to love
Well it's a ride that will push you up
Right against the wall
[Does everybody really need to know everyone?]
Take apart your head
[Do you really think you're really a part of it?]
Right against the wall
[And is your army really one of some thousands?]
Chew it up and swallow it
[And will you declare war on the loony bin?]

You're blowing by but you're running
Our feet slip in the alkalide
I can't shake this little feeling
I'll never get anything right

Goodbye you liar
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
And you think you will inspire
[When I arrive will God be waiting and pacing around his throne?]
Take apart your head
[Will he feel a little Old Testament?]
And I wish I could inspire
[And will he celebrate with fire and brimstone]
Take apart the demon, up in the attic to the left
[Yeah, I admit, I am afraid of the reckoning]

[Goodbye my love]
You're blowing by but you're running
[Wait right here, and they will come and pick you up]
Let's sleep in the alkalide
[I've been on pause, but I'm shaking off the rust]
I can't shake this tiny feeling
[I've lost my charge, I've been degaussed]
I'll never get anything right

[I'm on my own, I've been degaussed]
I'll never say anything right
[I'm on my own, I've been degaussed]
I'll never say anything right
[I'm on my own, I've been degaussed]
I'll never say anything right
I'm on my own

Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
Say, "I don't mind you under my skin.
I'll let the bad parts in, yeah the bad parts in"
Well when we were made we were set apart
But life is a test and I get bad marks
Now some saint got the job of writing down my sins
The storm is coming
The storm is coming in

You're blowing by but you run out
Our feet are slipping in alkalide
I can't shake this little feeling
I never did anything right

I'm on my own
I never did anything right
I'm on my own

The 'maps' line in this song is about the hardest to make out in the entire album, including all the screamed distorted parts. However after looking at everybody's suggestions and listening to the part over and over again (on the album and the acoustic studio session) I am sure that it is:
"Little cities names are burned on the maps"

I was convinced at first that there was a 'v' sound, like 'over and on the maps', but I'm pretty sure now that it's just the way he's saying 'burned', in a sort of faux-southern drawl. Man, why can't they just give us a lyric book...

Possibly a reference to the bible, and the separation of books/chapters?
3:6 seems to be the story of taking the fruit from the tree... i.e giving in to sin, losing innocence etc. This seems to fit with the themes in the album, so perhaps an intentional reference? Jesse and Vinnie both seem to include quite a lot of christian imagery and themes in their writing

Brand New – Sink Lyrics 13 years ago
"At dawn the fire snuck into your bedroom
Now I'm falling asleep to forget you"

This is remarkably similar to the lyrical themes in 'Bed'

"My head is lit I don't ever wanna go to bed
Your hair is on fire"

I'm starting to think this is a concept album, the same themes of fire, forests, and sleep are constantly recurring, listen to Noro in particular, seems to link all the songs together aswell as coming full cirlce to the hymn at the start of Vices

Pretty sure these are spot on. Google the 'Dog in the Manger Fable', really sheds a lot of light on the meaning of this song. Also neatly links in the "fifteen patons of bread" and the "where's my hay" part.

We need vices
We need vices
Where's all my hope and my marriage license?
(Where's my hay?)

Those days are dead (forgive me)
Those days are dead (forgive me)
Those days are dead (forgive me)
We need vices and fifteen patons of bread

She said goodbye to the ground
She said goodbye to the ground
She said goodbye to the ground
And jumped

Our good Creator (oh no)
The dog in the manger
Where is my shrink and my mind's eraser?
(we sing a sad song)

That forest burned (do you see smoke?)
That forest burned (a halo)
That forest burned
We need ten years on rewind so we can return

She said goodbye to the ground
She said goodbye to the ground
She said goodbye to the ground
She said goodbye to the ground
She said goodbye to the ground
And jumped

We need vices
We need vices
We've been needing to brandish our disguises

Those days are dead (forgive me)
Those days are dead (forgive me)
Those days are dead (forgive me)
We need vices and wheels to the funeral gate

She said goodbye to the ground
She said goodbye to the ground
She said goodbye to the ground
And jumped

Brand New – The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot Lyrics 13 years ago
I stumbled upon something online which really stunned me the other day. I found something describing "the smell of rain", which instantly made me think of this song, with the "you are the smell before rain" line.
The piece I was reading used the word 'Petrichor' - the actual scientific name that describes the smell that we associate with rain. I looked up this word 'Petrichor' and found: "Petrichor (from Greek 'petra' meaning stone, + 'ichor' the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology) is the name of the scent of rain on dry earth."
This astounded me, surely the "blood in my veins" line must be referring to this? It's far too much of a coincidence. This has just made me appreciate Jesse's lyrical genius to a whole new level... Such an obscure phrase, but ties two beautiful yet seemingly unconnected lines so perfectly together.

Also, "When my blood stops
Someone else's will not.
When my head rolls off
Someone else's will turn."
seems to fit in with the continuation of life of having children

"Do really think that for a house-beat you'll find your love in a hole"

I think this is a clever switch of words - instead of 'in a heart-beat' he has continued to portray the essence of the nightclub referenced several times in the song: house-beat, as in the beat of house/techno music. This fits in with the imagery of flashing white lights and steam

For the crazy breakdown bit, the lyrics are definatley:

"I stole bricks from the dam almost every day
Now I'm drowning in the flood I made
Explain myself to me on the other side
I'm gonna want some answers when I die"

As said in comments above, listen to the Daisy studio version on youtube, pretty clear
