John Mayer – Edge Of Desire Lyrics 11 years ago
Definitely my favorite song from Battle Studies, and in the top 5 of JM songs for me. It's one of those songs you can loop over and over again and never get sick of- it only becomes more meangingful. This is one of the few songs I'll be playing on guitar and singing and lose myself in. I don't know if it's the soulful guitar lick, contemplative lyrics, subtle percussion, or the rawness in John's voice...probably all of the above. Those elements in conjuction with the personal sting I feel in this song, makes Edge of Desire one of John's best, in my opinion.

Sara Bareilles – Send Me the Moon Lyrics 11 years ago
One more thing I would like to add- Sara mentioned in an interview that this song was written for the movie "Dear John," but was never used (no idea why since it's amazing!).
In the movie, the moon is a constant reminder to the two main characters of each other, which is really ties this whole song together with the chorus quite beautifully.
Just thought it was interesting and wanted to share :)

The Fray – The Fighter Lyrics 11 years ago
"What breaks your bones is not the load you're carrying, what breaks you down is all in how you carry." -The Fighter

Regarding the background of the song, during a performance at the University at Buffalo, Issac Slade mentions that he wrote the song "The Fighter" while on a "getaway" in a cottage, located in the mountains of Colorado. The song was inspired by a picture called "Strictly a Sharpshooter" by Norman Rockwell that he saw in a book he purchased. The painting depicts a boxer who has succumbed to his opponent, and a female companion by his side.

The thing that is wonderful about the Fray's lyrics is their ability to make one song individual to so many people. In a sense, I think it can be up to your own interpretation. The literal meaning of the song is that the man is a boxer, and even though his significant other loves him, he goes off to fight, reassuring her (I know I know I know) that it is his last fight. In the end, she is by his side as he is dying (he's not coming home) from an unexpected hit (he never even saw the swing).

A second interpretation is a less literal one, and my first impression of the song before I knew Issac's inspiration. When I first actually listened to the lyrics, it made me think of John Mayer's song "Assasin," because of the use of a metaphor of a fighter to symbolize the way relationships can be sometimes. The woman is in love with a man who is incapable of returning that love, and she tries to hold on to him as he is slipping away. He's a man who can't commit his love to her and always thought he would be alone (maybe we were meant to be lonely), but is questioning that belief (maybe we don't have to be all alone).
He does his best to return that love (he swings with all his might at all that might have been) and she gets even more desperate (she calls out his name, she begs him not to go), but in the end, their attempts are futile because he leaves (somehow they both know, that he's not coming home). He leaves, questioning his decision, and we are left wondering if he will return...
Loneliness has always been with me, with me
Maybe we were meant to be on our own
But I got to try or it will destroy me
Cause maybe we don't have to be all alone

Sara Bareilles – Send Me the Moon Lyrics 12 years ago
Sara B. is amazing, but this is possibly one of my favorites from her. There is something about it that is addicting and almost haunting, and leaves you a little breathless. It's one of those songs I've kept on repeat for hours. I think part of this is because I can relate to every single line in this song, so it tugs at my heart strings in ways many other songs can't. I think that fact that she uses the metaphor of nature, the sun, the moon, the sky, makes it painstakingly beautiful. The first line of this song reminds me of another one of my favorites out there..."I have been holding my breath, for too many nights in a row. And somewhere on coastlines unknown to me you paint your dreams, in reds and blues and greens." I'm so glad Sara B. decided to release this song, even if it wasn't on Kaleidescope Heart.

Also, given that I've listened to this song over 200 times, I have some lyric corrections (with *):

Holding my breath
Last one I've got left 'til*
I see you

Deliver my heart with the
Pieces and parts of me left*
Every last day seemed to carry the weight*
of a lifetime
Watch from the ground
As the gold fluttered down from the sky

Sweet sun
Send me the moon
Empty the skies out
Bringing me one step closer to you
Send it soon
And I will breathe in, breathe out
'Til you come in and out
Of view*
Of view*

Inches away from you
Scared what I'll take from you, dark*
I can live with your ghost
If you say that's the most that I'll get

Darkness to light
Moved from day into night to be near you
Still here I stand
I am sinking like sand in your sea

Sweet sun
Send me the moon
Empty the skies out
Bringing me one step closer to you
Send it soon
And I will breathe in, breathe out
'Til you come in and out
Of view*

You already do

Never you mind where the evening
should find us together
Distance can't take what is hidden here
safe in my chest

I'll wait for the day when
we finally say now or never
'Til then I'll be here wanting more
As I settle for atmosphere

Sweet sun
Send me the moon
Empty the skies out
Bringing me one step closer to you
Send it soon
And I will breathe in, breathe out
'Til you come in and out
I will breathe in, breathe out*
'til you come in*
I will breathe in, breathe out*
'til you come in and out*
Of view*
Of view*

Adele – He Won't Go Lyrics 12 years ago
This is one of my favorite Adele songs, I'm surprised it doesn't have more comments. I love the retro feel to the song, but the lyrics add that extra touch that makes this one of my favorite songs at this moment.

Before reading the comments on this song and learning that it was a about a couple where one of the partners was a drug addict, I came to a similar conclusion.
I think that from a general point of view, it is about being a relationship with someone that everyone else thinks is bad for you, but you love them and see past their flaws. She won't forgive herself is she gives up on him, no matter what people are telling to do, and she loves him too much to leave. In some ways, it seems like he has some sort of hold on her emotionally. In the end, he also realizes that he can't bring himself to leave her, and needs her just as much as she needs him.

Mat Kearney – Hear or Your Heart Lyrics 12 years ago
First of all, I don't know if this can be corrected, but the title of the song is "Head Or Your Heart" not hear or your heart.

I'm so glad Mat included this on the deluxe edition of his new cd 'Young Love' because its's one of my new favorite Mat songs. I think the sound and instrumentation of it is really unique and the lyrics are amazing, my favorite line being
"Choose one, baby your head or your heart
We could not of known it'd go this far
Choose one, baby, it's the hardest part
Losing one becomes the bitter start."

This song is about the simple struggle that all people go through in their lives, the civil war between the heart and the mind. I think this relates to the simple but profound quote, "The heart has reasons that reason does not understand." In an ideal world, our mind and our hearts would want the same things. However, sometimes we are put in the situation where we have to choose between what we want and what we know we should do. I understand how painful this can be, having been in this situation myself. It's a lose-lose situation because whichever one you end up choosing, you'll suffer consequences.

For me, I choose my 'head', and lost someone I loved dearly. Although this was over 2 years ago, I still have regrets to this day and question my choice every day. On the other hand, I also know that if I had chosen love over "the right thing" I would have felt some level of guilt as well. We come to this fork in the road where we have to choose, where 'one road opens and one road ends."

That's my personal interpretation of it, however I think it could mean something different for everyone. In some ways I think this also relates to the struggles and temptations that Christians (myself included) endure.

One other thing I'd like to add...I love how Mat incorporates some of the same lines/phrases in his songs, because it almost trademarks his lyrics artistically. In this case, he asks "tell me have I lost a friend?" There is a similar line in "Here We Go" from city of black and white, "I know how I lost a friend."

Sara Bareilles – Basket Case Lyrics 13 years ago
I can't believe this song only has 6 comments, it's probably my favorite song off Kaleidoscope Heart.

I think think what makes this song so beautiful is its honest simplicity; I can relate to being in this place.

Here's my verse by verse interpretation:

One, two, three, four...

I don't want to
Talk about it to you
I'm not an open book
That you can rifle through
Cold hard truth that you'll see right to
I'm just a basket case without you

The last person she wants to talk to about the break-up is the guy who broke her heart, and she's afraid that he'll see that without him she's just a "basket case."

He's not a magic man
Or a perfect fit
He had a steady hand and I got used to it
And a glass cage heart and invited me in
Now I'm just a basket case without him

He wasn't a perfect guy, but he opened his heart to her and she grew to love him. Now, she doesn't know what to do without him.

Begging for the truth
So I'm saying it to you
I've been saving your place
And what good does it do
Now I'm just a basket case
Now I'm just a basket case

He's asking her to tell the truth about how she feels, but it makes no difference if she does because regardless, she'll still be without him.

I don't say much and it'll stay that way
You gotta steel train touch and I'm just the track you lay
So I'll stay right here, underneath you
I'm just a basket case and it's what we do

She's still not ready to talk about it with him, and she knows that she would give anything to be with him. Since she is so miserable without him, she'll take whatever love she can get from him.

You're begging for the truth
So I'm saying it to you
I've been saving your place
And what good does it do
Now I'm just a basket case

Won't someone come on in and tug at my seams
Or send your armies in
Robbers and thieves
To steal the state I'm in
I don't want it anymore

She's hoping that someone else can come into her life to distract her from the emptiness she feels. She doesn't care who it is, as long as someone can take the pain she has felt from losing him.

You're begging for the truth
So I'm saying it to you
I've been saving your place
And what good does it do
Now I'm just a basket case
Now I'm just a basket case
Now I'm just a basket case
Now I'm just a basket case

Sara Bareilles – Between the Lines Lyrics 13 years ago
Since my username is inspired by this song, I thought it would be appropriate for my first comment to be for "Between the Lines" :)
This is one of my all-time favorite songs, and probably my favorite Sara song. I fell in love with her version on Little Voice, and appreciate the song even more after hearing the live version. Everything about it is flawless; the lyrics, the melody, and her voice.

This is what this song means to me:
When I first listened to this song, I assumed it was about being cheated on. But in one of Sara's live performances she stated it was about "loving someone who didn't love you back," and I saw this song in a whole new light. This simple explanation by Sara seems to embody a feeling that probably most everyone has experienced in their life; missed chances and unreciprocated love. To me, it seems to maybe be about a good friend that she had feelings for, never said anything, and now he has found someone else. She learned the hard way, and now they will always be "between the lines."

I can't say enough how much I love this song....God bless you Sara Bareilles for the heart and soul that you pour into your music, and the chance we've all had to listen to it!
