Bruce Springsteen – Streets of Philadelphia Lyrics 9 years ago
Thank you for putting this song in it historical perspective. Some of the remarks below make me doubt the awareness today's youth when it comes to this crisis. I was too young to be personally effected, beyond of being scared off unprotected sex. I was born in 1975 and raised in the Netherlands, which remained relatively gay-friendly through all of this. Thanks again for sharing you side.

Ok, if you don't get it's about AIDS, what to say, have you been living under a rock?

Kristin Hersh – The Letter Lyrics 10 years ago
To me this song has always been about going mad and then asking for love when you are on your knees. And knowing you need it, knowing you can't handle yourself. Are you still worthy...? Will the letters keep coming? I once heard Kristin play it live. She said it's actually a horrible song. It made me cry, in public. It will make me cry, almost any time I hear it.

Sonic Youth – Shaking Hell Lyrics 13 years ago
Hmm "Shake of your flesh" doesn't quite sound like to rape to me. I think the feminist skew to this one is to be a woman and to narrate the story trough the eyes of a sexually driven (typically male) serial killer. "I'll shake of your dress, I'll shake of your flesh" means rape and kill, or at least, undress and then kill. All with Kim telling the story as the protagonist. Scary indeed, but also turning the tables, taking over power, if you will. Women do have power, but also (non-feminists, libertarian point) women are also capable of violence.
