My absolutely favourite song on this album. I agree that this song is about being in a relationship with a partner who is addicted to drugs. I feel that its about dependance..both the addicts dependance on heroin and also the dependance of both partners on each other. For me the most significant and heartbreaking part of the song is where she sings "Will he still remember me...will he still love me when he's free? Or will he go back to the place where he chooses the poison over me?". She wants him to get off the drugs and for them to have a normal life together. But she fears that she may stand to lose him altogether if he gives up the drugs and no longer needs her either. That's a tragic line and shows song writing ability way beyond Adele's years..to see both sides of the situation so astutely...quite amazing! |

Adele said at her recent April 2011 concert at Shepherd's Bush Empire that the inspiration for this song title came from nothing more complicated than trying to light a cigarette in the pouring rain! The rain putting out her lighter and extinguishing the flame each time she tried to relight it..as though setting fire to the raindrops. Obviously the song uses the title as a more complex metaphor..a relationship gone sour, extinguishing the flames of passion..or perhaps the quest for the impossible..you may try and try but you will never be able to set fire to rain. So i think this song is about the futility of the relationship and the need to be free of it even when youve tries your hardest to make it work. |

Truly wonderful song by Adele. I agree with the various interpretations already given. However, i believe that the lyric written for the first line of the bridge is wrong and should read "Next time i'll be braver, i'll be my own saviour...when the thunder calls for me". This ties in with the mood of the song..where she is aware that clouds and thunder will always be on the horizon and she needs to prepare and protect herself against such eventualities. Sorry to be pedantic! |
