Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow Lyrics 7 years ago
@[JohnApricot:17612] - Nick used to wake up everyday in London, go to church to purge himself of the guilt of being a drug addict. Ten he would walk down to meet his 'man' to score enough heroin (he snorted it) and amphetamine to last him the day. He would go back to his shack of a place back in those days and just do his drugs all day. Wake up, rinse and repeat the day before drug addled behavior. When he met his now wife Susie, she had one condition if she were to marry him. She said "I'll marry you as long as you never go back to church." In the song off of the same album 'Oh My Lord'. Nick's first line is as follows:

"I thought I'd take a walk today
It's a mistake I sometimes make
My children lay asleep in bed
My wife lay wide-awake
I kissed her softly on the brow
I tried not to make a sound
But with stony eyes she looked at me
And gently squeezed my hand
Call it a premonition, call it a crazy vision
Call it intuition, something learned from mother
But when she looked up at me, I could clearly see
The Sword of Damocles hanging directly above her...,".

Going out for a walk for a junkie means going out to use. Nick is also quoted saying something to the effect of "I'm not the type of rock artist who will tell you how bad drugs are. They were actually pretty good." The songs he writes speaks about the pitfalls of illicit drugs, but he is not the preacher type against drugs.

Grinderman – Heathen Child Lyrics 8 years ago
The lyrics for sure are "papped and Monroed". "Papped" means to have your picture taken by the paparazzi without your permission. "Monroed" is to be effected by fame in a Marilyn Monroe manner.

Genesis – Abacab Lyrics 9 years ago
@[nayyan:2952] Everything you said makes good sense; except for your meaning of the word Abacab in the song. Mike Rutherford said that at the beginning of composing the song, they had the chord progression of A B A C A B written down. The music eventually changed to what it is now. Yet, they thought the word Abacab was special, so it ended up in the lyrics. Does it have a special meaning beyond that? I am not sure. You would have to ask the guys from Genesis on that one.

Warren Zevon – Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner Lyrics 11 years ago
How do these stories with just the slightest grain of truth get started? Warren was not a mercenary. In the mid '70's, he moved to Sitges, Spain. He wound up living and playing regularly at a bar called "The Dubliner". It was owned by a character named David Lindell. Now, Lindell was a former mercenary. Together they wrote , "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner". As far as the final line that reads, " Patty Hearst
heard the burst of Roland's Thompson Gun and bought it. I believe "...and bought it" means that after she was kidnapped by the guerrilla group "The Symbionese Liberation Army", she literally "bought it". She "bought it" in the sense of adopting the SLA's beliefs and philosophies. She definitely had not "bought it" in the sense of "buying the farm" or "dying in battle" as some have alluded to. She took part in a bank robbery at the Hibernia Bank in San Francisco. She wielded a M1 carbine during the robbery. Later she assumed the pseudonym 'Tania' after Che Guevara's closest female confidant. Psychiatrists said she was a victim of Stockholm Syndrome. She was sentenced to 35 years in jail, but her sentence was commuted by Jimmy Carter and she was released from jail after serving a mere 22 months. She was later given a full pardon by Bill Clinton. Most of all, what a great song.

The Dead Weather – New Pony Lyrics 13 years ago
You say the original Dylan version of "New Pony" is "awful". Greil Marcus of Rolling Stone Magazine on
August 24, 1978 gave the album a "no rating" out of 5 stars. Many critics and fans who absolutely murdered this album with "New Pony" when it came out now often say it is one of their favorites - a classic. The "Street Legal" album is a cohesive peice of art that tells a story of the devil's lure, love lost and love found - and much more. "New Pony" is a great song musically and lyrically and is an integral part of the albums' story. I have Dylan's entire catalogue and I am obviously not the typical Dylan fan. There are people who just like his acoustic folk music. Most gravitatate towards his Greatest Hits and are not at all interested in his catalogue of diverse albums. These are not true Bob Dylan fans. Are you a real Bob Dylan fan? If you are, I am very confused as to your comments on "New Pony". I have never heard negative comments about this song by Dylan fans before. If you prefer songs like "Knocking On Heaven's Door" and "Forever Young", it makes sense and all is fine. If not, I am officially a Rainy Day Fan 12 and 35.
