I love it how in this song Bowie follows bleak lyrics ('Don't believe in yourself, don't decieve with belief, knowkedge comes with death's release') with strangely hopeful ones - 'I'm not a prophet or a stone age man, just a mortal with potential of a superman, I'm living on.' From that I get, 'I'm not a genius or an imbecile, just a regular person who, like every regular person, had the potential to be great.' Lovely. Only thing wrong with that theory: Bowie IS a genius. |

Oh Bowie, you're such a freak! This song makes me laugh every time. What is also odd is that this song comes after 'After All' on 'The Man Who Sold The World' - this song, 'Running Gun Blues', is about murdering people, yetb is somehow less creepy as 'After All'. Go figure. : ) |

Only two comments? Disappointing, this song's so good. It's very sci-fi, could almost be the plot of an Asimov story or something. I always thought it was a somewhat cautionary tale about becoming too dependent on technology - this awesome computer that solved all the world's problems and was totally trustworthy actually went insane through boredom and started (at least) threatening to kill the people. Not so nice! (I guess it was UNDER PRESSURE). Moral: such powerful technology, computers smarter than humans, is not such a great idea.;) |

emurtle, I would recommend you listen to this song, it's aweaome, really. As to its meaning, I agree withthe whole Ziggy Stardust concept album thing - after being born in 'Moonage Daydream', Ziggy hans out in outer space and contacts children through the radio, who then get really excited. I always though the 'don't tell your papa or he'll get us locked up in fright' line meant that the parents would think the children had gone crazy and hence lock them away... whatever, fantastic song. |
