Manchester Orchestra – I've Got Friends Lyrics 13 years ago
Um...I never write on here, but I can almost say for a fact this is NOT about drugs. As a fellow PK (preacher's kid) just like Andy Hull, this song takes on a new dimension for me, and I could write almost lyric for lyric if I had the time to explain what he's talking about, but it would be a very long post! Basically this is about trying to desperately to live up to his father's (and God's) expectations, but falling short, and not knowing how to deal with it (ex. dirty on the ground is what I see, I need another reason why I need another reason, tell me to breathe). He still agrees that they'll always have a relationship , but his father will never know when he truly will need spiritual help (ex. cause you and I will ride, but when I need you, I need it quickly...in case (in fact you'll never) know...etc. etc.) The chorus of "I've Got Friends" is simply about the sickening transparency of most of the church family that PK's are pushed into seeing for what it really is, and are usually afraid to go to when they truly seek spiritual guidance. They may all be your "friends", but as I know all too well, most of them are fake and really "don't want me to stay. And, in case "I can't play where I"m not supposed to anyway" in a childish tune confuses any of you with the theme that I'm presenting, I personally LOVE this lyric. As a PK, you watch everyone else that's allowed to do the things that you can't because you live in this glorified fish bowl where everyone is watching your every move as a child...something that can really affect someone as they get older, whether it is intended or not.
If anyone is interested, just let me know and I'll take the time to break this down lyric by lyric...right now it's one of my favorite songs. Thanks for reading! ;)
