Death Cab for Cutie – The Ice Is Getting Thinner Lyrics 13 years ago
And here we have the closing of the concept for Narrow Stairs.

Our character is talking to Cath, realizing that they've changed as people. They abandon their love in the snow, but still cling onto it. But they hold on to long, for spring arrives and melts the ice beneath them, and everything collapses under their feet. And that is when they truly realize that they weren't meant to be, and that the ice was getting thinner under them the whole time. And sadly, this is where our story ends.

It's a sad and depressing story. It's a very dark album, but it's somehow compelling. Hopefully my interpretations were somewhat accurate. Hope you all enjoyed it!

Death Cab for Cutie – Pity and Fear Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's the top of the climax in the concept of Narrow Stairs.

Our character finally accepts it. He finally sees what he didn't so long ago. He realizes his mistake, and goes where he said he wouldn't go. He isn't sad about it. He just feels sorry for himself and is afraid of returning to the life he once lived. And finally, their relationship cracks and everything falls apart.

Here's more about Narrow Stairs as a concept album.

Our character finally cracks. He really screws up this time. And whatever he's done, it's enticed argument between him and Cath. They argue and argue for hours on end. Whatever he did also surprises Cath, so maybe he cheated on her? Who knows? It doesn't really matter exactly what he did. But something has gone horribly wrong in their relationship.

Death Cab for Cutie – Your New Twin Sized Bed Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's another idea on how Narrow Stairs is a concept album.

Our character has begun to see the flaws in his relationship with Cath, and is desperate to save it. He showers her in gifts, such as a queen size mattress, but she denies them all. She gives the mattress away, feeling like the gift is just too much. The gestures she gives begin to depress out character again, and he slowly begins to see that their marriage was not out of love, but out of loneliness and heartbreak.

Death Cab for Cutie – Grapevine Fires Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's more news on the concept of Narrow Stairs.

This is where things really get tricky. This song is very metaphorical. I believe that the fire may be a metaphor for the relationship beginning to fail. He works and works to get this feeling that their relationship that fail to go away, but her knows that it's only a matter of time. The song is very tricky to try to relate to a concept, but the idea seems to fit.

Death Cab for Cutie – You Can Do Better Than Me Lyrics 13 years ago
Another lyrical interpretation of how Narrow Stairs is a concept album.

So it's been a while here. I think that the album may be going along with the changing seasons. This song sounds like something you'd hear in the holidays, so that suggests that it may be winter. By the end of the album, it talks about spring and meting ice, which further suggests that the album may follow the seasons.

Our character in this song is starting to see the truth a little bit. He's thinking that maybe they're only staying together because they don't want to be alone. But he soon dismisses, knowing that he'll never get a girl like her again. He feels worthless, but she makes him feel like he's something that's worth keeping. He loves her dearly, saying that she can do better than him, but he can't do better than her. It's depressing in a way since you know that they're together for the wrong reasons, but somehow sweet.

Death Cab for Cutie – Talking Bird Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's another concept album interpretation on Narrow Stairs.

Our main character is the one speaking in this song. He is talking to Cath, calling her his talking bird. A talking bird suggests that in his eyes, she's treasured and adored as a pet bird would be. He tells her that he loves and and he will always be there for her, but that is she ever feels like she needs to, she's free to leave. He offers her everything he has, and tells her that it's all hers for the taking as long as she stays. It's a sweet thing to say, but what makes it difficult is that they aren't really together cause they love each other, but because they need someone so badly.

Death Cab for Cutie – Cath... Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's more interpretations on Narrow Stairs as a concept album.

Here we meet another character named Cath (Possibly short for Catherine). She is marrying our main character here. They're both broken hearted and desperate for love, and they see each other kind of as kindred souls. Cath, while not exactly wanting to, ends up marrying the guy. She's very uncomfortable with the situation and knows she doesn't want to do it, but they're both so desperate to be loved that they go head first into it without thinking. And so she ends up closing the door on all these other guys who would have done her so much better for this one man.

Death Cab for Cutie – No Sunlight Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's my next entry on Narrow Stairs as a concept album.

This song is strange. It's probably the happiest sounding on the album, but is one of the most depressing points in the story. This is where our character becomes completely crushed by his "love" that was mentioned in I Will Possess Your Heart. This girl totally pulverized his heart, and now he feels as if there's no sunlight in his world. The idea of there being no sunlight is a metaphor for depression. He sinks into a depression from being totally rejected. As time goes on, things get worse for him, and he feels like he'll never get out of it.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's my next interpretation for Narrow Stairs as a concept album.

This is our character really showing us how much he wants this dream girl of his. He really believes that if she spent time with him, he would have her. I believe that it is supposed to come across as creepy, and you'll see why when you read my interpretation for the next song. She rejects all of his advances because he's becoming obsessive. Yet still, he endlessly will not give up on her. His infatuation for this girl is so deep that it has completely blinded him from the truth.

Death Cab for Cutie – Bixby Canyon Bridge Lyrics 13 years ago
I really think that Narrow Stairs is a concept album. I'll put an interpretation for each song on the page it has on here so people can check it out.

This song opens up the story where a young man, who has obviously loved and lost, begins his tale. I don't think his other love died. Maybe she left him or their love just faded. Whatever the case, he's lost love somehow. This is where he begins telling us about the state he's in. There are some lines foreshadowing what we are going to learn in the next song, such as "I grab some stones from underneath, and waited for you to speak to me." He's lost love, but he wants another girl who he knows is out of his league and he can't have her. And so he waits for his chance to finally speak to her.

And thus, a very sad and lonesome tale begins. See the next song on the album for another interpretation.

Delta Spirit – Bushwick Blues Lyrics 13 years ago
It's about a guy who becomes infatuated with this girl, who uses him to get out of town and dumps him there. And then as he's heartbroken and going home, he meets another girl. But he can't manage a relationship, because he still thinks of her.

The line "Because my love is strong, and my heart is weak, after all" is interesting. He uses it their first two times to show how much he wants this girl, but it becomes more of a curse in the end. His love (Or more like infatuation) is so strong, but his heart is too weak to let go.

I say infatuation because he talks about how they spoke so brief when they first met, but gives us nothing else for us to base how long they've known each other. So our only thing to do is to assume that they haven't known each other for too long. But, in a nutshell, it's about being used and being heartbroken over it, but still wanting the person who hurt you. Great song.

I think it's about all of these politicians who feed us falsehoods about war and money, when in reality we're just pawns for their personal and political gain.

Soundgarden – Jesus Christ Pose Lyrics 13 years ago
Ladies and gentlemen, here is my take on the "Christians" who insist on shoving their religion up my ass. And please, by all means, correct me if I'm wrong.

The Webster's Dictionary defines faith as belief that is not based on proof. And your path is a faith. That is a fact you cannot deny. Any religion, even Atheism, is a faith. Faith is putting trust into something, even though you don't know whether it is true or not. And by treating your religion as pure fact, you show yourself for what you truly are- weak, faithless cowards. You have no true strength. Anyone can stand up and protest by saying "My religion is the truth!" But in reality, you don't know whether it is the truth or not. That's why it's called faith. If we knew what was true, it would be called fact, not faith.

You do not have the strength to have true faith. You do not have the willpower to be able to say "I don't know if God exists. I don't know if there's a heaven or hell. But I am going to believe in it anyway." THAT is what faith truly is. Being able to say that you don't know what is the real truth, but believing anyway. That is something you clearly are too much of a coward to have. Instead, you insist on parading you holier-than-thou, self righteous beliefs and take everyone who disagrees and shoving it up their ass.

You are weak. You are cowards. Until you are able to face the uncertainty in faith, and unless you are able to stop being a holier-than-thou asshole, you will never truly have faith for what it is. Faith IS uncertainty. Because if faith was certain, it wouldn't be faith anymore. Now take you faithless ass somewhere else and chew on that for a while.

THANK YOU AND GOODNIGHT.
