To me, this song is about the moment you realize that you control nothing in your life. Honestly, most people go through life thinking "Nothing bad will happen to me" until something does. I think this song embodies the moment when that bad thing happens.
The recurring "I could do most anything to you" shows that time will take all away and that humans aren't really in control of anything. Also, the lines "safe and sound" kind of show the way people feel until the worst happens. It makes you think, I'm here away from war and death and everything else crappy about the world. |

Okay, I want to add my 2 cents. I'm a christain kid who believes in God, but I don't think this song is nesscessarily talking about whether you believe or not(which everyone is makingit out to be)I think it's about being scared to notice something amazing about someone just because of physical traits.
Like, in the song, Joan sings aobut how God might be a lonely slob, and she then says "would you want to see if seeing meant that you would have to believe." Well, to me, that means that we as humans are quick to judge without going deeper into a situation or personality. It's saying, "Would you want to work hard to get past the appearance, or do you want to take the easy way out and just brush him/her/them off?"
The whole thing about God might just be the writer's way of emphasizing the rediculousness of bigotry. |

i noticed the change as it progresses from "your life", "my life", "our life". i think the singer was dumped and is now saying that "sooner or later" the ex is gonna realize that they don't like the person who they're with now, and they're gonna go back to the singer. but, the singer is convince they're over the ex even though secretly he still is completely in love and wants her to "call my name" so he can go back and protect and love her. |

sounds to me like it's a bout a guy the girls instantly fall for, even if they know he's with someone. and he lets them. i also think that the singer is an ex who he dumped for one of the tons of other girls who love him (because he just can't say no of course)and she's trying to figure out what the heck his problem is, she thought they honestly loved each other. but, now she's not so sure.
