Joan Osborne – What If God Was One Of Us Lyrics 12 years ago
I believe that this song has nothing at all to do with god, instead it has everything to do with people - Christians in particular!

It's "Just trying to make his way home, back up to heaven all alone. Nobody calling on the phone, 'cept for the Pope maybe in Rome." line in the song that does it for me. How do people see god, who is he, what is he? That is the question.

During the times of the plague columns of people would walk through the streets whipping themselves, trying to atone for the sins of the masses with their own pain, as if that would give god some sick satisfaction and make him lift the curse. But what would god really have thought of this public spectacle? During the inquisition people were tortured and burned for not believing. Would god have enjoyed this?

We humans are very good at justifying just about anything to ourselves. I can have that piece of cake if I go for a walk. I can lie on my tax return because the government isn't using the money properly anyway. I can kill these people because GOD told me to. But what would he really think?

What if the guy on the bus was god? How would you treat him? Would you set up a fancy formal function with priests and choirs - removing yourself and hiding away because he is the BIG GUY? How about just talking to him? "What would you ask if you had just one question?", how about 'How are you'?

Ultimately I think the point of the song is if god was just a guy on the bus, would you get to know him? Or just stick with what the church (whichever denomination you identify with) tells you? Maybe god is alone, nobody calling on the phone, because nobody can be bothered getting to know him anymore.

Just my thoughts.

Richard Marx – Hazard Lyrics 12 years ago
No, it is not due to a guilty conscience. He is living in a town were there was only one person who cared for or about him and it is strongly implied that he loved her. Then suddenly she dies, and everyone accusses him of killing her. Who in or out of their right mind would want to stay under those circumstances?!?

The Fray – You Found Me Lyrics 12 years ago
I know it has been done already but I think that the meaning of this song really stands out when it is veiwed a conversation. This is how I see it.

Narrator: I found God
On the corner of First and Amistad
Where the west
Was all but won
All alone
Smoking His last cigarette
I said, "Where you been?"
He said, "Ask anything."
(A man finds God just standing there, smoking! Not out helping anyone or even seeming to care!)

Man: Where were you, When everything was falling apart?
All my days, Were spent by the telephone, That never rang.
And all I needed was a call! That never came, From the corner of First and Amistad.
(He asks God the first and most important question, Where was he when he needed God the most?)

Man: Lost and insecure

God: You found me, you found me

Man: Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why'd you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?

God: Just a little late. You found me, You found me.

Man: In the end Everyone ends up alone.
Losing her, The only one who's ever known,
Who I am, Who I'm not, and who I want to be
No way to know, How long she will be next to me.
(The man has lost someone very dear to him, and God wasn't there!)

Man: Lost and insecure

God: You found me, you found me

Man: Lying on the floor, Surrounded, surrounded!
Why'd you have to wait? Where were you, where were you?

God: Just a little late. You found me, You found me

God: Early morning, The city breaks
I've been calling. For years and years and years and years
And you never left me no messages, You never sent me no letters
You got some kind of nerve, Taking all I want.
(God says what is in the mans heart, what he wants to say most. Hearing what he wants so desperately to say but can't find the words for the man realises that God was there, but he was so wrapped up in his own problems that he couldn't see it.)

God: Lost and insecure

Man: You found me, you found me, Lying on the floor

God: Where were you, where were you?

God: Lost and insecure

Man: You found me, you found me

God: Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why'd you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?

Man: Just a little late. You found me, You found me.
(The man realises that he was the late one.)

God: Why'd you have to wait? To find me, to find me?
(God asks why the man didn't let him help.)

I know that it is a very literal, and christian, interptretaion but that is how I see it. I have been through many hard trials in my life, and have turned to prayer - only to be met with silence. I think it would be nice to think that I had some help through those very dark times, that I was actually heard and that someone actually cared. But that is the great thing about this song - anyone can find meaning in it. Thanks, Arthurn.

Kenny Rogers – The Gambler Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about knowing how to play the game of life.

"You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em," You have to know what is important and what you have to hold on too.

"Know when to walk away and know when to run." You have to know when thing are getting dangerous and when to get out if you need to.

"You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table. There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done." Don't worry about money, there is never enough of it anyway!

"Cause ev'ry hand's a winner and ev'ry hand's a loser" No matter what hand life has dealt to you you can still win if you play your cards well.

Brad Paisley – Waitin' On A Woman Lyrics 13 years ago
He waits because he loves her, if she takes two minutes or twenty it doesn't matter.

"I've read somewhere statistics show
The man's always the first to go
And that makes sense 'cause I know she won't be ready
So when it finally comes my time
And I get to the other side
I'll find myself a bench, if they've got any
I hope she takes her time, 'cause I don't mind
Waitin' on a woman"

What more can you say - fantastic song!

Ugly Kid Joe – Cat's in the Cradle Lyrics 13 years ago
Cats in the cradle, silver spoon, little boy blue, man on the moon are all references to nursery rhymes, some written in america and some in england. The nursery ryhmes refernce reenforces the idea that it was during those formative years that this mans child learnt that being a workaholic with no time for his family is the way to live life.

Nickelback – If Today Was Your Last Day? Lyrics 13 years ago
'Leave no stone unturned,' means never stop looking, never let your fears stop you from finding that thing that give your life meaning.
'And take the path less traveled' means that you should never be afriad to follow the beat of your own drum, not just go along with the latest fashion because the crowd does.
'That first step you take is the longest stride' mean that starting out on something new, a new job, a new relationship, a new life course is always scary. But no matter how scary it is once you start it will get easier as you go along.
'leave your fears behind', well you can figure that one out.

Hope that helps.
