If people start enjoying the silence too much, then Depeche Mode will have to go out of business. It's amazing that the words in this song is actually what gives you an idea about how destructive words can be. If this song was exclusively instrumental, nobody would be able to understand what it's about. Music can mean absolutely anything. It's amazing that words is one of the main reasons as to why this song is so great. May be the next song by Depeche Mode should contain no words...and no music, and everyone will be enjoying...telepathatic communication. I wonder if the words in this song can actually destroy something for someone. Seems like the words in this song are intended to ruin words themselves. How ironic. However, I do need someone to say it, because this is what I think as well. I still listen to this song sometimes, even though it's been out for a while now. This is a true masterpiece! |

A lot of Depeche Mode songs have a religious undertone to them, and this song could be interpreted in such a way as well. He is talking about being at the discretion of some greater power, being trapped in the world created by it, not knowing what's going to happen to him and how long he'll be here. "I'm hanging on your words living on your breath feeling with your skin Will I always be here..." This verse is referring to the fact that this greater power gives him wisdom and direction,that he breathes because spirit was breathed into him, his skin is part of the skin of the creator, and he is asking this creator if his life is eternal. Though it seems as if he's not very excited about this prospect until he finds out or knows for sure what he needs to do and what's the meaning of it. |

It can also mean that the wrong beginning can lead to the wrong end. This type of thinking is characteristic of a victim, who completely lost the capacity to see faults in others, and believes that everybody is right, and better than themselves. Obviously, everything that happens to a person is influenced and effected from inside and outside. Sometimes, people are absolutely not cooperative and unyielding, and make things impossible for you, if you fail to do things their way. Gee, I can write a thesis on this... |

| This song is about bullying. A bully always makes their victim feel as if everything about them is wrong, even when it's absolutely right, and the bullied person start believing it. This can be very devastating emotionally to the point that the bullied person can commit suicide or the bully can kill the bullied person physically, and make it look like an accident. | |

This song could also be about a person, who was committed a race-based crime against. The line "I was born with the wrong ascendancy" refers to the English belief in the dominance and supremacy of their race, therefore, the guy in the video is wearing a mask of a typical white Englishman's face, implying that this person's true face is representative of an immigrant from a more "inferior" nation that the English normally cannot tolerate. The lines "Something wrong with me, inherently, The wrong mix in the wrong genes"...also refers to the fact that some immigrants from poor countries are given a really hard time in more technologically developed countries, and made feel as if everything about them is wrong only because it's different, and they can't measure up to the standards. It's very easy for an alien to become a target for local and other immigrant haters, who constantly want them out of their country. The self-driving car that has a capacity to drive backwards can symbolize a high technological progress of coutries like the UK, and refers to the idea that immigrants from poor countries are "backwards", and local population has a lot of power over their lives by keeping their hands tied up. Therefore, if you are a nice person, coutries like the US, UK and the like should probably be avoided because they can easily kill you, if they simply don't like you, and no one will help. They'll be all driving all over you ruthlessly to pursue thier greedy evil goals, in case you accidently get in their way. |

I believe this song is about a man, who committed suicide because the final line "I used the wrong method with the wrong technique" is referring to the methods he chose to kill himself, meaning that they actually worked, well...against him. In the very beginning of the video, he is shown as already dead lying on the front passenger seat of a self-driving car. Then he wakes up... meaning that his life keeps going on in another realm, the dimension of death, where he is shown why he died. His death by suicide is portrayed as a murder. He looks as if somebody literally murdered him, and that what it seems like to him... His car is showing him that all his life he was going in the opposite direction of the others, that's why all his actions and words clashed with that of the people, who were moving forward. However, his hands were tied while he was at the mercy of those people, and who simply drove him to his sucide/death. Will he live again is left to the amagination of the audience. The reason why he feels as if everything in his life went wrong, is largely because of the final outcome. If he hadn't died such a tragic death, then everything that happened to him would've, probably, seemed right. |
