For me, this song is about beating depression with another person...just in my opinion. I <3 Owl City "I regarded the world as such a sad sight Until I viewed it in black and white" The world is a miserable and terrible place. But when you view the world in black and white, you realize that it's a place filled with BOTH good and bad things, and you have to take the bad with the good. "Then I reviewed every frame and basic shape And sealed the exits with caution tape" Thinking about all of the good and simple things, and breaking down everything and taking it away from it's evil nature, they "seals the exits"-- walks away from the idea of suicide, which is the final exit. "Don't refocus your eyes in the darkness And don't remember this place unless I describe all the things that you cannot see And we'll unravel the mystery" Here, he is telling someone to never look back into that dark time in their life. Then he will be able to explain to them all of the wonderful things this world has to offer. "Farewell, all my friends in textbooks, I'm going home Cuz my blood cells cannot depend on the weather in photographs" His mood will no longer depend on the things he sees, no matter how bad they are, because it's his life. "There's a light show out my window somewhere way up there Dear Vienna, are you singing? Dear Vienna, are you swinging? Dear Vienna, we were happy like the shades of May when we got carried away" The light show is the stars, which Adam often seems to relate to hope. So he's saying that there is hope. Then, I think he's talking to another person about all of the wonderful times they've had together after they got through the dark times. "I was so far out of place Watching those stars in outer space Cuz I am so far from where you are There's a light show out my window somewhere way up there Dear Vienna, are you breathing? Dear Vienna, are you dreaming? Dear Vienna, we were happy like the shades of May when we got carried away" When you fight a difficult battle with someone, you form a deep bond within your souls. So whenever you're without them, it can be sad, but you know that they're alive and safe, which is so much better than them being gone from this world. |
