fun. – We Are Young Lyrics 11 years ago
What drives me crazy about this song is the part, "so set the world on fire we can burn brighter than the sun" because it reminds me of a different song that I can't quite put my finger on but I think could be by Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins. Or, a song where there is an African vibe with chanting? Ugh. It bothers me every time I hear it.

Genesis – Entangled Lyrics 11 years ago
I agree but the type of facility seems more like hospice where the brutal truth is that it is a type of acceptable and legal euthanasia where the terminally ill is given morphine to induce euphoria so that they "feel no pain." This is usually administered by a nurse and is a culprit for death as some of the doses are unreal and morphine depresses the respiratory system. It seems to me that instead of a prolonged suffering from said illness, the duration is shortened and bearable and is only possible with consent. So, when the nurse gives the bill, that is kind of chilling when you think about it because not only the bill for payment, but the bill of death. Scary....

It also reminds me (again) of the part in Brave New World where Linda (the savages mother) is prescribed lethal amounts of soma while the doctors knew it would lead to her demise. She goes on a "soma holiday" an ethereal dream-like state and is in a "transition" room before he is to head (after death) to the incinerator. When the savage goes to her, there are children there to be "conditioned" on death and they intrigued that he is in distress that his mother is about to die because they were conditioned to believe that life is part of death and the body is a useful product for the rest of society since the incineration process harvests nitrogen or something. Anyhow, the soma was her death sentence (much like morphine) and the nurse was kind yet puzzled why he reacted to his dying mother with sadness and fear. Also, Freudian sleep reminds me of how society was conditioned via their sleep and was mentioned in the book. Both this part of the book and the parallels with respite care remind me so much of this song!

Fiona Apple – Window Lyrics 11 years ago
This reminds me of the type of person who when conflict ensues, they usually remain expressionless and just listen all the while bottling up their anger/pain ect. The dirty pane that she is looking through is expressing that during such times of confrontation or arguments, she is holding everything in and while she remains silent, her pain and anger fogs her judgement.

A person can only take so much though and if they have not adapted constructive ways to handle their anger or pain by strategically discussing "issues" instead of overly reacting during a heated argument, the pent up emotions that are purposefully silenced will eventually turn into rage. Rather than break something or hurt someone (subsequently hurting herself), she breaks the silence instead. I personally think the "him or her" is probably referring to her parents.

The next cluster seems to be about the advancement of holding back. Instead of constructive discussion, she further retreats and sort of dissociates from the argument and grows numb. When someone says to you that "it goes in one ear and out the other" or "don't you have anything to say?" it probably is because the person has completely separated themselves from not only the situation, but from their body (it seems) and go into this blank stare/trance. She needs that few snaps in the face to break through and into reality again.

"It was the fact being back" could mean that she has snapped back to the fact that the argument still is not over yet desires to escape it. She is being forced to argue/confront/discuss the "issue" and is trying to avoid it at all costs. This could also mean that as an adult, she finds that he methods of coping are not much different than as a child, unfortunately. But hey! Who likes confrontation anyways?

Again, she breaks the silence and decides to open up and speak her thoughts and feelings which is actually more revealing to herself about what it is she is harboring. Sometimes when we keep emotions or thoughts inside and never share with others, we need no words to convey them because there is no need to so you sit with them alone, not fully understanding your emotions, thus yourself. Letting it out is like clearing your head but sometimes what you express is a surprise even to yourself.

"Better to break a window than forget what I had to say." Keeping in what you think/feel does not solve the problem, only compounds it which over time accumulate to where you cannot focus on the one "issue" because you are flooded by them all at once. It's better to speak your mind and break your silence than let it fester and turn to rage. And when that rage finally comes out, you lash out and hurt others and are unable focus or see what the confrontation is about.

Adam Lambert – Whataya Want From Me [Alternate Take] Lyrics 11 years ago
Not too sure what "alternate take" means, but since my take is an alternate version, here goes:

Hey, slow it down, what do ya want from me? = basically, he is saying that though he is bombarded by the emotions of the other, he still isn't sure what the other wants from him.

I'm afraid = obvious...afraid to allow the other to affect him, to give in when it isn't clear what the other wants. This is a classic symptom of not being able to fully trust that the other is genuine with their affections which there is probably a significant reason for that.

There might have been a time I would give myself away, oh, once upon a time I wouldn't give a damn but now here we are...what do ya want from me = Once upon a time he found that he was easily disillusioned and didn't heed to that understanding because he didn't care if he got hurt for he knew immediately he would. Now, he understands the pain isn't wroth it so he is leery of this other.

Yeah, it's plain to see that baby you're beautiful and there's nothing wrong with you...it's me, I'm a freak, but thanks for loving me 'cause your doing it perfectly = he does see this person as beautiful and is taken aback by this persons emotional honesty [?] or ability to be open at least because he normally isn't. He genuinely cares about the other and is gracious for the "love" the other has shown and in any normal situation would be exactly what he needed and he feels a bit remorseful for not being able to return the same.

There might have been a time I would let you slip away I wouldn't even try but I think you could save my life = obviously there are attachments and strings to this other or else he wouldn't be trying and would have walked away without hesitation a long time ago.

Still, while he doesn't want the other to give up, he needs time to sort through his own thoughts and emotions. Probably what this other has done was create some sort of fabricated mess (it messed me up, need a second to breathe) that he is completely uncertain about and where nothing is clear, no facts are straight and it seems more to be a cat and mouse game which is cool as long as it is strictly fun and games and no strings attached. While this other seems to profess their undying love and he does realize that a few years of this proves the persons aim is true, he still does not know what the person wants from him. He doesn't want the person to give up on him as he try's to figure it out and he understands that his inability to return the gestures will eventually cause the person to give up which he doesn't want either. He understands what it means to give and take and for balance/harmony, but he can't trust, therefore he cannot drop his guard. Just a thought...

Hmm. I also found that in 1904 the modern ghost-town of Hebron in Utah was heavily damaged and abandoned by it's inhabitants because of an earthquake. What's funny though is that when you look to the definition for "moor" it means to tie down a boat, but also refers to a tract of land reserved for game or a boggy area with poor drainage. A Moor is also an ancient African people called the Berbers.

So, the deer with her head on the moor (in reference to Hebron, the ghost-town) could mean several things, I assume. The moor could refer to wanting to "tie down" the city to spare it damage from the quake, or possibly could be a reference to the ultimate reason for abandon which was insufficient water to sustain the town (the deer hoping that the land would become boggy and sodden with water).

Here is a funny tid-bit. The wiki page for the Hebron earthquake states that a man named Huntsman proposed to build a reservoir which became the town Enterprise where the people from Hebron eventually moved. Considering that moor could also mean a tract of land for hunting, I find it funny that a deer is game (possibly the towns-people) and the Hunstman (source of water) eventually gained his prospects.

Also, Hebron is biblical town so could this somehow mean something to do with the Moors aka Berbers??

This is definitely one of those songs you wish to know what the artist intended instead of driving yourself crazy with the possibilities, if you are notorious for that.

Exactly!!! Was about to post something along these lines in my above reply until I read this and to be so trolly, decided that I would post it here instead.

It isn't exactly "everyone" being the same. All of the countries that comprise of the continents, there are only thousands of islands which seem to be the ones who are most easily conquered when they are content to be the lone isle of the sea.

Your female persona (which I always knew was male, remember) was a way that you could justify to yourself the wicked way you tried to directly converse with me.

How can a boy who has kept up with me for all of these years admit it/come right out with it?? Lure her in by creating an illusion of something familiar. When she reacts with fondness, it is amusing. You are not only the greatest actor (so you tell yourself) the girl whom gives you night-terrors and sweats your sleep is now feeding from your hand...

You cannot accept this of yourself and so you must hate what you thought you loved and thus your creation, your frankinstein is now a monster. What a catch. Like a rifle that blows a hole in your head.

Bang, bang!

Gotye – Bronte Lyrics 11 years ago
I wonder if he could be referring to Charolette Brunte who passed while with child ("now your bowl is empty") from possible dehydration and malnourishment from excessive vomiting ("and your body can't stop rocking"). Still, her voice "echoes" through the ages as Jane Eyre was still a required reading when I was in high school.

Also, the child was with her while she was leaving (dying) and much like her last incomplete manuscript, was not ever born, hence, "we will be with you when you're leaving, we will be with you when you go," the child also being tragically associated with the death and loss of her unfinished works.

Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire Lyrics 12 years ago
Oh, crap, I've managed to do the multiplication thing again but here was the in-twerp from another interp. site:

After looking at the video and rereading the lyrics to this song, I see a very dark and sinister interpretation.

The story begins just after the writer abducts a young girl from a playground or outside a school. She is confined in his vehicle. As they are driving away she is commanded to lay still and be quiet. A people are watching and a comotion is starting due to people's realization that a young girl seems to be missing.

He drives her to an alley where he rapes her all night. At first light he drives off to kill her and burn the body. As he is driving he forces her to give head. Thereafter, he strangles her to death. His knuckles are pale as he squeezes her throat; her mouth is of course open as she chokes and gasps for air.

He then burns the body. The fire feels feverish against his skin. He can taste her burning flesh. The bones rattle as the flesh is burned away.

'Sex on Fire" is sex with the knowledge your murder will follow. You are consumed with what will transpire...DEATH.

Interestingly, the video shows the singer being exorcised of a demon. Pesumably, the demon that possessed him to commit this hellish act.
__________________________________________________________________________

I believe that all lyric interpretations come from somewhere within the wells of dark and I can tell ya...this is one ya certainly wouldn't take your kids around. Morose and repulsive to say the least. Not many words for a superficial song that has a bunch of bury "music" and words you cant even discern. Band sux, song sux and lyrics suck about a guy who gets sucked in a car which just sux.

Yada, yada. Once I read somewhere that this song could be about a child molester and thought, shit, this guy is like for real and that he really wants to stalk a school yard and pick out what child he wants to abduct and sexually abuse. Hopefully, people are able to separate themselves from a structured analysis enough to not make it personal, or else...we should really go back to biblical times where and eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth is literal. Can't say I wouldn't eagerly participate in plucking the eye and wrenching the tooth from such creatures. So, yeah. Sex on fire is like hell because I am christian and I believe in god...but truthfully, I believe in equality and derision the most!! A barbaric way to understand justice, yes, but at least it's fair!! And that is my take on $0.02 worth of crap! Yep!

Marina and the Diamonds – Obsessions Lyrics 12 years ago
Can't get the damn comments to read what the condition the condition was in but my immediate thought is that the guy has a problem with an obsession of not obsessing and the girl is weak which actually is his obsession...he considers his food to be all the same (girls) and are all vulnerable pests in his bed. He clearly can't figure out what makes her strong to break her into something weak because she has OCD and is never clear.

On second thought, maybe not. The whole supermarket thing makes me think he is overwhelmed by all of the choices (have you not gone to the grocery store and tried to decide what "type" of freaking maccaroni you want to buy because there are wayy too many to choose from?). The girl is saying something like, "fuckin' hurry up! your dumb ass is standing in the way of everybody and drool is slowly trickling down your chin, move!" The pressure to make the most essential/economical decision is being barked at you and you are tempted to just grab the first thing that is at eye level. Further, the sad vs sick ideas show that he is saddened by what is happening while he "holds her" (loves her) and cannot escape the sick ways she sees things in her overly controlling and abusive demeanor towards him. Sooo, what makes you weak isn't about his egotism but rather how he wants to know that she is human and not some nit-picking-nagging-control-freak! And when he turns and walks out the door knowing he will not eat for a week is when he says, "fuck it" knowing that he will starve in more ways than just nourishment of his body with a few crumbs...she gives him nothing more...yet his small protest isn't worth empowering him to leave. Her cold shoulder/cold heart is not accessible and he lives on hoping that one day he will penetrate the ice.

Her obsession is to control and his is to enter the softer parts of her soul.

Rush – The Trees Lyrics 12 years ago
While I tend to think in generalities and not specifiacally to one demeanor of the entire order of things, this seems to be about the "oppression" of women or blacks or jews or what have you and how a voice and wine and cry all day yet the bigger guy always wins.

Specifically, this could be about how it feels just to be the maple. Maple sounds like male but also has two syllables like female. (this is going with the whole woman oppression theme) but wat really is the powerful clause is that one thinks they are better than the other. The pleas of the smaller are insignificant...the oaks just shake their heads.

It's more of a critique of society and the "generalities" of ignorance. How the smaller can fight to level the grounds when all they are really doing is creating hostility. You can't force ignorance to comply....you can only wish that evolution will eventually create equals (not generally) within the context of a mental mindset.

The oaks think they are better and the maples think they can up-rise against them but if the oaks cannot understand and neither can the maples, they are left to grapple about the heights and none shall ever rise. It's easy to think you are mighty or get mad when you know you are not, but what is rational? What is natural??

Frank Ocean – We All Try Lyrics 12 years ago
Reminds me of Don Williams, "I believe in Love" (the words, anyways). My guess is he had early country influences and is more along the lines of folk? Hmm. Will have to take a listen now...(not a proper smilie face for the look of Oh, crap! along with a significant amount of shame).

Frank Ocean – Thinkin' Bout You Lyrics 12 years ago
That's exactly what I thought, too. The beach house in Idaho reminded me of an old country song, "Ocean front property in Arizona" by George Straight where he uses sarcasm to cover his true feelings. Sort of like the fighter jet could mean that he could have fought for the girl to understand how much he cared, but resorted to sarcasm. It's like he's saying, "sure, I only wanted to sleep with you," when really she was his first love as well.

Also, I think the "colors turn from black to white" is a metaphor for how the memory is like a photograph where over time the colors may fade, but the memory never will. Anyhow, I agree with everything you said.

Foster the People – Waste Lyrics 12 years ago
Huh? Are you denying your heritage? If that's even true, you dirty catholic. If so, it isn't even really a belief, no? It's who you are...

Which is beautiful!!

I would post this but I have no clue. Did you really tail the Appalaichain Trail, meathead (or whatever). I promised my oldest son that when he graduated high school, my graduation present to him would be to travel that route. This was because a history channel documentary that we watched together. Did I google it? (like the many ways I've tried to "invent" my own "RV") or did you really?! (both) If the latter, I hope you two enjoy the experience of creating a vision from scrap and having it to literally see what you've accomplished together with your bare hands, together. I hope it was/is great.

And BTW, if you've heard that little head mention (man, ABC would come in handy here to put the line through mention because that's clearly not the word) speak...intuite...the cosmos...

Please know, the things we love and share with them are the things they come to know...and I can tell you, the rocket ship mural I painted on his wall when he was 2, or 3 is cartoonishly superb! Those books at the library for little critters do wonders (so does Space Center Houston). You are not important! That is my message to you! That is not true. At all.

It's funny because I did let him read your blog that one time (and that makes me angry) but he did not read your Tibetin (?) lake one about the color differences.

We were crossing a very long bridge to the beach and my sunglasses made chocolate milk seem emarld green. I mentioned this to him and he said, "well, it is green." Sure enough, it was so I asked him why is it...

His response (though I've botched some) was because that part was more shallow. I helped him devlop (or explain) and he assured me that we can see the bottom unlike the deep. And that made me happy that he could figure that out all on his own, but it also made me think of you and I'm not sure if that is something to be happy about because I can't figure out if this is just an amusing side show for you, or if it means something...to...you.

Then, I wonder if it so should happen that I arrived here by coincedence and you thought I was circling you. How emeshed is this mess? *shakes head*

Is that not so sad? Those little moments where we try to convey our actions (and more direfully, our feelings) through little astriks and smilies and wtfe? I'm not used to it, and I do not like it, so I never will get used to it. You can't SEE me shake my head now. HaHa! LOL! LMFAO! :) :D :)))) :):):) *yawn* :,( <3 <333

Ha! This should be dedicated to your life partner! Obviously, your circumstances are gentle. Make love, not war. Hell, ya might even make a baby! Why?? Why not??? But, why ____? Strange.

Say what you mean, and mean what you say, and if it so should happen you need to be fake, don't force it if there are reasons which justify...why lie? If your original intention is to keep someone in the dark, why not keep them in the dark completely? And I'm talking about me here, which the above is completely and utterly seperately from me. Rush – Between Sun and Moon Lyrics 12 years ago
Not a huge Rush fan *blush* but I never knew how amazing their poetry/imagery is! Feel like huffing them so here goes nothing (in a Rush)

The moments when we hesitate between a "whisper and a shout," "between wonder and doubt" is much like a deep lake where the suface is smooth elluding the unknown; the depths. It is when you hesitate and take it in to contemplate these depths that you discover.

Also, planet Earth whose surface is covered in mainly oceans is like a great lake between the sun and the moon. When the earth, moon and sun align, the earth's shaddow completely blocks the light of the moon allowing for the full dark to reveal "bonfire lights in the mirror of the sky." Ahh, the wonder! Ancient men wondered such things and prayed to the winter and summer solstices; "what be these glorious lights in the deep of night?"....Ahh yes to yes....Why, the sun!! But, why?!

Perhaps god? From the ancients who worshiped the sun to modern man who worships a man or god, such is another time to pause and hesitate somewhere between the wonder and the doubt.

And those night-lights we marvel at, some no longer exist, yet we are see their ancient light that has traveled vast expances of space to reach our eyes...a grand illusion! Is love like that? We can see it's light with our eyes, or we can magnify it through a lense, but is it real or just a wish? Much easier to ponder upon the stars, but people and matters of the heart are much more ellusive!

And while we seem so miniscule and small, when compared to the vast spaces between, we do revolve the sun, and the sky is but a mirror to reflect that we ARE part of it all, each light we see is but another sun! What a RUSH! *tingles*

Rush – BU2B Lyrics 12 years ago
Considering he refers to the "Watchmaker" and suggests that the Universe has a plan, perhaps he is attempting to counter the Deistic "Clockwork Universe" theory. Possibly the title, BU2B reveals that he feels compelled to be you (those who have imposed their beliefs, possibly his upbringing) to be (to exist).

Without knowing much background on the members of Rush, could they possibly believe in Deism in that what initiated the beginning of time is removed from it since the beginning?

This would then change the context of the song to be a blatant mockery of theocratic religion. If he/they believe that the initiator of the Universe has no hand in what will or has become, then the song is more of a jab to those who feel that a god has involvement in their lives.

The watchmaker is symbolic of a "creator" but one that is completely removed from the system and does not pre-determine the "order" of things. "He" (it) merely made the watch but does not (itself) keep time nor govern the intricate units and subunits that continually evolve within the grandest machine imaginable...the Universe.

Perhaps he is urging the audience to consider that the Universe does NOT have a plan and though we are human, we CAN attempt to understand it; to define it.

Here is an interesting web site from the University of Oregon that summarizes the Clockwork Universe quite nicely :D

Default – Sieze The Day Lyrics 12 years ago
Oh, forgot...when he says, "you've just lost your precious spot somehow" along with "you are still no longer welcome here" he is most likely referring to his heart (or emotional open-ness, if you will). He chooses to keep it close as it is important to him, or if you hear "closed" is suits the same purpose; keep closed the opportunity to bond.

The fear of losing "it" (when referencing the "heart") is what drives him to carefully guard it. Also, the "throwaway" could mean that he is fully aware that if he allows this person back in, they will throw it away; his "heart;" something he is not willing to go through again. The other person is left seeking "the place" that they once had full control over but he is saying the damage is done.

Though the person only wishes to "find their place" in him, they never will for it is now heavily guarded and is the motivation to break-away instead of becoming, once again, the throw-away. That part IS precious to him and is why he keeps it closed and is why when speaking to the girl, he attributes mockery to the word "precious." Simple song, yet profound!

I could not figure how the video had anything to do with the lyrics so your post makes sense. My question would be who the man represents. He is the first who makes the "leap" and falls into the river which obviously frightens the girl who then jumps in to save him. We are left with the imagery that they both plunge to their deaths in a waterfall much bigger than the inital survey of the water fall reveals. So, who is the man supposed to symbolically represent?

Hmm. Maybe that his blind faith was greater than the girls and it was through the generation of fear that she jumped in as well? That people believe in god through faith or through fear? Interesting.

Considering the bulk of the song is dependant upon high school (and considering the Everything, Everything band was not witness to the Columbine shooting), the song nearly is a jab at the younger generation to consider the true implications of something (or Everything) bigger than themselves (high school).

The evolution from U2 to Radiohead to Coldplay really reveals that music of this sound has made it's way, but has the message? I'm not so sure.

They seem to evoke a sense of remorse but blurr the meaning with things like chasing cheerleaders through sewers with polyethelene bags after being dropped off (at the sewer? by a limo) and things like bullets (indicating a school massacre).

However, I think the relavence lies within the idea that such things are tirvial in the grander scheme of things, and all shall retrun to the earth in rubble and dust; the buildings and the people within. The trivial becomes monumental! I like that! While the Earth will naturally recycle, the people who inhabit her do not think it is important...so much more is... why with prom and blah, blah...HA! We trash, yet we are the same!

Anyhow, this epoch recycling (crude oil) is what we will become though we cannot forsee this, nor do we entirely care, so it seems. He does! Preservation in the upmost degree...Earthly trivial matters are earthly bound and morose. Though when petrified, when preserved, we are in a dormant state; the landfield is not really a wasteland, our chemistry is preserved and is latent and for what? To be completely burned and used up in fueling technology for those in the future to make it out alive (or out of the desolation called planet Earth?)? Exactly! Yet the emotional evocation shows resistance in that (though I understand that meaning in life is derived from knowing your time was well worth it, but is it?) ? Maybe that is where the climbing over the fridges to see the treasure in the sky comes from, because the frigid reality that we are nothing but recycled material for future use is uncomfortable to bare. We came from recycled material, so why does it matter? We are just as trivial as the high school nonsense. We are just a waste of space and time and in the eons of time and space, don't you think we should just lay to waste whatever trivial matters that complicate our mind? I wish! Ahhh...rocket fuel...sounds good to me! ;b

P.S.S. Sounds a lot like Kashir by Led Zeppelin. Now if that has any significance to their inspriation, I haven't a clue.

P.S. I doubt this song has anything to do with drugs, sex, or god! Just listen. Or, rather, let's play a game of Russian Roulette...

Not too much of an interpretation here, but would like to point out (since I've read that 10 Years is a christian band (and would disagree)) that the part where he says, "now that your guards down let me show you" sounds a lot like, "now that your god's down, let me show you," meaning that (I think) they mean to represent you "conscience" despite the religious parallels. They make it to where even religious people could choke on their words and non-religious people can finally breathe while summoning the same feelings/concepts! Man, these guys, and their music is great along with the vocals!!

"A chemical coma life" (which I always heard as, "a chemical come to life") doesn't have to be about drugs. What else is a fastidious infection that leaves you a dribbling, mouth wide, eyes fixed, idiot? T.V. perhaps? Shopping? Entertainment? It sort of represents a "dumb down" or "zombie-ness-es" or something. However, if you hear it as "a chemical come to life," well that could only mean stimulation within the mind/body. That is a major reason why this song rox! Is he trying to wake up the coma by bringing our chemicals to life? Or is he simply orating the facts? Maybe he is the "life" of the chemical that we try to subdue and is why he says, "you can't kill me that easily?" Definitely, he is calling us to Wake Up!! But to what? Maybe that is reserved for each of us to figure out ourselves. Your wake-up call is often times your "calling." It is up to YOU to define that! Good luck! We all need it!
