Arcade Fire – Modern Man Lyrics 13 years ago
As a wandering post-collegiate 20-something, I couldn't agree more. I feel like this song is about having grown up- having that 9-5 job and having done all the right things, but realizing that you're unsatisfied with what your life is. This line especially-

In my dream I was almost there
And you pulled me aside and said you're going nowhere

I think that's you almost being content having accomplished what you set out to do when you were young- you've become an adult, you're a man now. But you aren't satisfied, you've seen the monotony of life and you ask yourself- is this it? Yes I have a job and am a stable adult now, but is this really all life has to offer?

"Like a record that's skipping, and the clock keeps ticking"- to me that line sums up best what this song is about. Realizing that life is monotonous, that you're running out of time- and your dissatisfaction with that fact.

Arcade Fire – Ready to Start Lyrics 13 years ago
I got mostly the same thing out of this song. To me, it's about accepting what your life is going to be now that you've grown up. But it also is about dealing with where you've come from- dealing with where you were and what type of person you were in College (and being tempted to go back to that,) while you try to leave it behind and accept being an adult in the real world. Saying that yes, I know being an adult with a full time job sucks, but I'm ok with it, and I'm not going to go back to being a kid- as tempting as it may be.

I also agree with tifnz about the title of the song. It's about literally being 'ready to start' life as an adult. The song also hit me like a bullet, undoubtedly because of my age and the fact that I'm making that transition to full adulthood. Just a very powerful song.
