i dont think this song is about suicide, but it obviously is about death. most likely the girl has cancer or something like that which is cutting her life short. This part describes a girl who is young and wants to die like a princess, in satin and with roses, like snow white or sleeping beauty. LORD MAKE ME A RAINBOW I'LL SHINE DOWN ON MY MOTHER SHE'LL KNOW IM SAFE WITH YOU WHEN SHE STANDS UNDER MY COLORS, LIFE AIN'T ALWAYS WHAT YOU THINK IT OUGHT TO BE, NO AIN'T EVEN GREY BUT SHE BURIES HER BABY when she dies, she will become an angel and look down on her mother and family. because of her love for her mother, and her mothers love for her they will forever have that connection, and her mother will always know that her daughter is with her, even if she isn't there physically. life is full of beauty, such as love and rainbows, but she has to die anyway, which makes her sad. not for herself so much as the people she is forced to leave behind. THE SHARP KNIFE OF A SHORT LIFE, WELL I'VE HAD JUST ENOUGH TIME the sharp knife refers to the sharp pain one feels when sad or heartbroken. but despite the fact that she is dying soon, she still had just enough time to tell her mother and those she loves that she loves them, and appreciates them. I'LL BE WEARING WHITE WHEN I COME INTO YOUR KINGDOM I'M AS GREEN AS THE RING ROUND MY LITTLE COLD FINGER I'VE NEVER KNOWN THE LOVIN OF A MAN BUT IT SURE FELT GOOD WHEN HE WAS HOLDING MY HAND, THERE'S A BOY HERE IN TOWN WHO SAYS HE'LL LOVE ME FOREVER WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT FOREVER WOULD BE SEVERED BY THE SHARP KNIFE OF A SHORT LIFE, WELL I'VE HAD JUST ENOUGH TIME in this verse she is talking to God, possibly praying. she's talking about how she is still a virgin, and is green. by green, i believe she is referring to a horse. when they are not trained or saddle broken, they are called green. so she is inexperienced, and hasn't had a chance to know love outside of her love for her family and friends. she has a small crush on a boy, like a little boyhood/girlhood crush. if she had the chance to actually continue her life and live longer, it is doubtful that this crush would actually lead anywhere, but at this moment in her life, it's all she's got. so she will hold onto that small part of love that she feels for this cute boy in her town who was nice to her. SO PUT ON YOUR BEST BOYS AND I'LL WEAR MY PEARLS WHAT I NEVER DID IS DONE shes talking about their attitudes, and boosting their morale. just put on a good face. she's not going to sulk about her death, or cry about why it's happening, or be mad at God or anyone else. she's putting on her pearls metaphorically, therefore, so should everyone else. even though she wasnt able to do much in her life, it's done. there's no going back, there's no point crying about it. just accept it and move on. A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS, NO, I'LL SELL EM FOR A DOLLAR. THEY'RE WORTH SO MUCH MORE AFTER I'M A GONER AND MAYBE THEN YOU'LL HEAR THE WORDS I'VE BEEN SINGING FUNNY WHEN YOU'RE DEAD HOW PEOPLE START LISTENIN' she's referring to the saying "a penny for your thoughts." but since she is dying, and there's so little time left for people to listen and hear what she has to say, they are much more willing to listen and try to understand because who knows how much longer she has left. and what she says now is what they will hold in their hearts and remember the most. they will look back at their memories of her, both good and bad, and try to find meaning in each one. and when they cant, they are willing to do anything, pay anything, to hear her voice one more time. THE BALLAD OF A DOVE GO WITH PEACE AND LOVE GATHER UP YOUR TEARS, KEEP EM IN YOUR POCKET SAVE EM FOR A TIME WHEN YOU'RE REALLY GONNA NEED EM the ballad of a dove is about innocence and purity, and its' continuous search for peace. doves are used multiple times in the bible to represent peace and God. it is to show that she is innocent and pure. she is a virgin, and has not done anything in her life to spot her white and pure innocence. so she is telling her family and friends that it's ok, there's no need to cry or be sad. she is in good standing with God, and is going straight to heaven. she isn't sad, so why should they be? they should save their tears for someone who really needs them. all in all, it is a song about a little innocent girl who has not done much in her life, but she is ok with it, and though her life has been short, it has been full and beautiful, so there's no need to have tears shed over her, because she is ok with her death, and so should everyone else be. |

| well i dont agree with the way you said it, but i agree with the point you were making TheWayYouAre. i took Scheisse's advice and i listened to Jeff Buckley's version, and i find that though he has great dynamics, he cannot pull off the emotion that Rufus Wainwright can. his voice is a little bright and thin, almost immature sounding. still good, but he obviously didnt get the same ammount or kind of training that Rufus got. his voice is still beautiful, but it cant quite pull off this particular song, or do it justice. to me, when Rufus sings it, you believe and feel what he is saying. you believe he is truly in pain, and you feel for him. when i listen to Jeff Buckley sing it, it is pretty, even beautiful. but it is not as earnest, culminating, or nearly as powerful as when Rufus sings it. | |

| thanks for adding that. i didnt think he wrote it. and besides, i dont even think it is Rufus Wainwright who sings it in shrek. the song is in shrek, but rufus isnt...though he is the one that sings it on the soundtrack. but he does not actually sing it DURING the movie. | |

| though it does speak alot about bathsheba and david, i still think it does mention Sampson specifically. because he also was in Gods grace, and God himself told him to never cut his hair. but Dalilah convinced him, and just like davids temptation for bathsheba, both men lost their thrones, or spiritual good standing with God. and i think that is what the artist is meaning. i agree with everything you said though;) | |

| i watched the music video, then looked up the lyrics, and i must say, this is a very deep and meaningful song. when i look at the music video, i see all the children and the little girl with the black eye, and it looks like the song is about child abuse. it would seem that the whole video is a reference to ET, the movie. what is ET about? it is about an alien who just wants to go home...but he cant because he is stuck on Earth. the doctors bring in a chocolate bar and try to resuscitate the chocolate bar, but they fail to do so. chocolate bars to me represent childhood, and childlike innocence. the fact that the doctors are trying to bring it back means that abused children are forced to grow up much too quickly, and they skip their childhood. though you can try to bring it back, there is no way to do so. the little girl comes out of the chocolate bar, and walks away. the little boy tries to follow her, but he is being held back by all the wires and stuff covering him and "chaining" him to the bed. when he is finally able to get away,he runs to her, and they kiss. all an abused child wants from life is love, and that girl represented love to him. but he doesnt want love from his parents, like the music lyrics said, he wants love from her, the only one who understands what he is going through. | |
