The Lumineers – Dead Sea Lyrics 12 years ago
Wes (lead vocals) said he wrote this song about what Jer's (drums, vocals) girlfriend said to him once, how he's her "Dead Sea" because she'd never sink when she's with him.

I think the meaning of that is, the Dead Sea is so salty you'd actually float in the water instead of sink. Which is an oddly sweet, and creative way to tell someone they're special to you and that you consider them an exception.

Love this song. Wes' ability to tell stories through the music is incredible.

Of Monsters And Men – Little Talks Lyrics 12 years ago
"'Little Talks' is... How we usually make our lyrics is, Raggi and I, sometimes we come up with stories or situations. That one is about a relationship. Sometimes we haven't wanted to give too much away. We like people to read their own things in the lyrics. I guess I could share it. It's about a couple and the husband passed away and it's from the conversation between the two of them. We don't know if she's going crazy or if someone's actually there. We've kind of been inspired by people that lived in my house. This old couple that lived there for 30 years. The woman passed away, so it was kind of different.'"

Of Monsters And Men – King and Lionheart Lyrics 12 years ago
"Essentially the band are dreamers who are trying to bring that feeling back to life. The self-described folk-indie band is truly inspired by storytelling and making sure that everyone who listens comes up with their own interpretations to their stories."

In interviews, they mention a lot of making their own versions of fairytales.

I feel like they tell simple stories with their music, but add that dream-like feeling to them. Putting them in a different time, place or setting to make it more interesting and easier for anyone to relate to.

Of Monsters And Men – From Finner Lyrics 12 years ago
Obviously, most songs have a deeper meaning than simply what story is being told. But from what I can gather, it's about riding on a whale's back. The song refers to "Finner" which is another name for Rorqual, referring to any of the several whales in Balaenoptera. That's a genus of different whale species.

I'm not sure where they went or are going on this whale, but it seems like they wanted it to be known that they're far from home and so happy. Like an adventure. I'm not sure.

Also embodies the feelings of many of the religious martyrs we know of in our history.

Thrice – Wood and Wire Lyrics 12 years ago
Definitely written to convey the perspective of someone with a clean/guitless conscience through someone in jail facing the death penalty.

"You take me where men fear to tread, but toward the thing I most desire"
This shows that earthly consequences don't mean anything to this person, because they know no matter what happens here, they'll be saved in the end. In the end, we answer to God.

"I've lost nearly everything to a crime of which I'm innocent....an endless glory still remains to me."
This shows that this person has lost all of their worldly possessions and lifestyle, but they know that none of it matters because they have have glory waiting for them in the after life because of the way they lived here.

So powerful. Very few artists even write about such heavy subjects.

"Thy days are known, and thy years shall not be numbered less; therefore, fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever."

I agree with that. Basically what I meant by love was the idea of oneness. Definitely agree. Love.

Bright Eyes – In the Real World Lyrics 13 years ago
The first impression of this song is about someone who is living inside of their beliefs, but they're "always falling through." Goes along with a common theme in The People's Key album, that there is no greater power basically. "How sad it is to know I'm in control" -Triple Spiral. The real world is waiting for this person to realize this, get out of their "little box" and realize that "everything's the way it seems." At least that's how I see it. Beautifully written. Pretty depressing idea.

Thank you guys. I can definitely see the mushroom cloud "tree of smoke" reference. Makes so much sense. Again, thanks for the reply.

Bright Eyes – All of the Truth Lyrics 13 years ago
Pretty sure any girl could relate to these lyrics. It just surprises me that a guy actually thought to write them. Definitely been in this situation before, I hate being that girl.

Yet again, Oberst has the most talent with words out of anyone alive. He can turn any feeling into words that describe it perfectly, even if it's sarcastic or corny. It's all so shameless.

haha! I love that. The lyrics do seem a little bit sarcastic, I have to agree. That's one thing I love about a lot of his music, especially his older stuff. There is that mocking tone, a puzzle on purpose. Fantastic.

Bright Eyes – Jejune Stars Lyrics 13 years ago
Jejune:
-without interest or significance; dull; insipid
-juvenile; immature; childish
-lacking knowledge or experience; uninformed:
-deficient or lacking in nutritive value.

Obviously the first few verses are talking about love, which is mentioned throughout the album. When we express love, it's "a way to return" to what I think is this "basis, essence of life" that is mentioned in the next verse. The rastafarian theme is all about love, and Danny Brewer (the guy talking throughout the album) reiterates this point - "love has always been the message," and the last thing he's talking about at the end of "one for you, one for me" is love/compassion/mercy. It seems like at some points it is hinted at that love is the way to get to wherever we go after this life, aka: the basis, the essence of life - the ultimate reality the Wheel of Becoming refers to.

This song seems to express the struggle we all have inside of ourselves that we will never be able to achieve this afterlife, whether it's heaven or a second life or a life as a tree or whatever. We all struggle with that, but we get close to it when we act out of love.

There is a theme in this album about "codes." For example, in "A Machine Spiritual" he talks about forming some kind of code - maybe this means pattern, as in the pattern of society/mankind. I'm honestly not sure.

"Come fire, come water, come KARMA, we’re all in transition
The WHEEL OF BECOMING erases the physical mind
Till all that remains is a staircase of misinformation
And the CODE we inherit, the basis, the essence of life"

The Wheel of Becoming is a representation of Buddhist beliefs about life, death and rebirth. It is the belief that karma or past actions traps us in this cycle of existence (code?). Life within the wheel is considered captive reality, and life outside of the wheel is considered ultimate reality. I think this is what is meant by "the basis, the essence of life."

BrightEyesAtheist, I think you have a good point about hiding what we're made out of.

"Green of the radar" means it's raining, but he has an umbrella. I personally feel that he's basically saying, if we're made to love, why do we hide it/hide from it?

"Inside some cloudy nostalgia where there are no features
We look at ourselves through a porthole, the passage of time
See that sunny day that we snuck down, hid under the bleachers
Kissed as the band marched, everything fell into line"

This, to me, is expressing looking back on memories of love (nostalgia) through the passage of time. It's as if you can feel the nostalgia at this part of the song, it's my favorite. Looking back on memories where you were sharing with someone else , it feels so right because you're showing love and that's what we're MADE OF/here to do, and "everything [falls] into line." but then it ends, and we're scared, hiding under our umbrellas and avoiding what we're made of.

"It's just so bizarre, all the things I'm afraid of.
Why do I hide from the rain?"

The fact that we hide from it makes us jejune? or maybe this makes relationships we share jejune? I'm still not sure.

That is my take on the song. Please let me know what you think!

Bright Eyes – Haile Selassie Lyrics 13 years ago
"In Rastafarianism, they're talking about fighting back against an imperial power with the best tools at their disposal, which are music and soul and weed and community," [Conor] says. "The symbolism in that music seemed very potent to me, and very appropriate."

Conor expressed in interviews that he wanted to include the Rasta message of being one. Not in the music, but in the lyrics.

"Hitchhiking back to Zion"
Zion is what some Christians refer to as Israel, or the society that will be formed in the last days. It is said that these people will be of "one heart and one mind" which seems to go along with the Rasta idea.

The Wheel of Sevens is a wheel that has the seven verses of the Lord's prayer, from what I understand.

Haile Selassie is seen by the Rastafarian people "as a messianic figure who will lead a future golden age of eternal peace, righteousness, and prosperity." so he's like their Messiah. Again, this idea of Rastafarianism, and a people of peace, like Zion.

"Pilgrim beside the fire
It’s been a long winter
We got a lot in common
Cover our heads as they split the atom
All of our days are numbered
I’ve taken some comfort
In knowing the wave has crested
Knowing I don’t have to be an exception"

as in he is relieved that this Omega Day hasn't come, so he can live life as usual? Not sure. I'm guessing the Omega Day is the day that this oneness is achieved. Sort of like Judgement Day?

No idea what he means by tree of smoke - anyone?

Book of Hours is a Christian book from the Middle Ages...

"We are the chosen people
Safe from the next evil"

as in they're working towards some Eternal Salvation?

"One Love, magnetic memory
(the idea of one, rasta theme)
Reel after reel spinning within me"(over and over again, history, time moving forward?)

A cenote is a pool of land water surrounded by rock, basically.

The swimming in this cenote that "the heavens made with black fire" is compared to a dream, so maybe he's saying he isn't sure the heavens are really there, like Heaven is only somewhere you can believe in in dreams. I'm not sure.

Still, daytime ghosts, tree of smoke?

Help me, people, please:]
