Eve 6 – Promise Lyrics 7 years ago
I took the chorus as having a completely different meaning. I thought it was about a romantic relationship but he was basically saying, I'm not going to force it. I'm going to be real. And if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.

The double negative is not just a fancy way of saying I AM going to try to fuck with your mind. I think he's saying he's not going to actively try to be fake to make the relationship work. (double negatives can serve a purpose).

And "I promise not to mind if you go your way and I go mine" --> if it doesn't work out, he's ok with it.

If he was saying he WAS going to fuck your mind, why would he say I'm going to try not to lie and not let you down right after that?

"Everybody wants charm in a smile and a promise
Promise not to try"

People want the charm (fakeness) and promises forcing people to be who their not. But he's not going to do that.

Toto – Africa Lyrics 7 years ago
@[Dumbdumb:15910] Great interpretation, I think you're dead on. Although I think the "she" could also be Africa itself (She's coming in --> coming into view, almost there). A few more things that support it:

1. The lyrics interchange "it's waiting there for you," and "she's waiting there for you." "It's" would be a little strange if he was talking about a woman.

2. "I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become" --> basically the theme you articulated.

3. "solitary company" --> he wants to be alone, but with nature. Wouldn't make sense in a relationship.

Wondering about two lines:

Does "Gonna take some time to do the things we never had" mean thing things we had never done?

Also, wondering what the first two lines mean. Maybe that he hears drums --> he longs for Africa? Not sure about the second line, that the drums are just in his head? It's actually quiet/peaceful there?

@[Ohsoscattered:9259] is definitely right. The video pretty much shows exactly that abusive relationship theme in different contexts. "wholelottawoman" missed the mark.

fun. – Carry On Lyrics 8 years ago
Had a little different interpretation about things. The song is definitely about a couple, but I don't think the girl is down because of problems between them, she's down because of something else terrible that's happened to her. Perhaps a death in the family. She's disillusioned with life.

The next verse he's talking with his friends about the inevitable tragedies we will all face in life. He thinks he shouldn't have to be subject to that when so many bad things have already happened to him (I like to think I can cheat it all). But then he realized even when those bad things happened, people helped him, and he carried on.

"Woah my head is on fire".....He (or anyone) maybe going through emotional hell, but they can carry on. (legs are fine).

"Lay your clothes down on the floor"...This is a reference to sex, but more so saying that together, they can make it through.

Great song.

@[boddah4124:4630] I think he means her 'heart is on fire'. The 4th of July is a reference to fireworks. (e.g., "light up like the fourth of July" is an expression). It's probably used to symbolize her emotional state, similar to "my head is on fire" later in the song.

Phosphorescent – Song For Zula Lyrics 10 years ago
Interesting that you added, "but he does" at the end. Is that anywhere in the song? Or is that just generally society's view of someone who is not lusting after love? I think THAT is the point of the song. It's not that he does, it's that he doesn't. He wants to be free of it. But society will still just "stand there in the glass looking at me" like a broken animal.

David Gray – Slow Motion Lyrics 11 years ago
I first heard this on ER as well. Really made that scene come to life. Which ironically, I think, is the point of this amazing song.

The song's about what people have said, those moments in life that touch you, that change you. But it's describing how film (movies and television) can do that to you. A "slow dissolve" is a transition effect used in film. "While you're watching", a character can fade away in a slow dissolve. It's just a movie/show on a screen, but it seems so real ("Did I imagine or do the walls have eyes"). It captivates you ("they held us hypnotized").

Movies feel like life in those intense moments. But in those intense moments, life can also feel like a movie, ("Life in slow motion somehow it don't feel real"). Haven't you heard people say, "it felt like we were in a movie" or something similar?

You can't catch snow flakes. No matter how hard you try, they'll disappear. The characters and stories in movies aren't real, no matter how much you believe they are. But they still can have a huge impact on you. They can stay with you, just like a "long lost friend."

I think this song is a simple, yet beautiful expression of how film, and more generally art, can impact us. Something that often gets overlooked in our hyper-commercial culture.

Don Henley – The End of the Innocence Lyrics 12 years ago
Agreed, this song is definitely talking about the people becoming disillusioned with their political leaders but it's framed under the general disillusionment everyone feels with the loss of childhood innocence. Someone mentioned the JFK era vs the Reagan era. One image that pops into my head was the image of the whole some American family during the JFK era, with the suburban house, 2.3 kids, and a dog. Those kids grew out of that era and also grew up, likely losing the hope of that time along with their childhood innocence.

Band of Horses – Laredo Lyrics 13 years ago
Thought this one was pretty straight forward. He's lost someone, most likely they died.
He is confused, alone and is taking a road trip looking for answers. He's also contemplating suicide (the gun, the knife, talking about drowning in the lake). The part about putting a bullet in his Kia could be a symbol of frustration.

Anyone else think this?
