Howard Jones – New Song Lyrics 3 years ago
@[Fielding99:35626] - While it's entirely possible that the intention of the song is to promote the acceptance of communist ideology, there's nothing that smacks of communist ideology in the lyrics themselves. Therefore no one singing the lyrics is "subconsciously repeating communist ideology". Like most bad arguments, you failed to actually support your proposition with actual evidence from the source.

Fleet Foxes – He Doesn't Know Why Lyrics 8 years ago
I attempted to correct the lyrics because as they stand, they're a friggin' mess, utterly nonsensical. It'd be nice if when people post lyrics they actually KNOW them. Here's what they're SUPPOSED to be:

Penniless and tired, with your hair grown long
I was looking at you there and your face looked wrong
Memory is a fickle siren's song I didn't understand

In the gentle light as the morning nears
You don't say a single word of your last two years
Where you were or when you reached the frontier
I didn't understand, oh

See your rugged hands and a silver knife
Twenty dollars in your hand that you hold so tight
All the evidence of your vagrant life
My brother you were gone

And you will try to do what you did before
Pull the wool over your eyes
Put a week or more
Let your family take you back to your original mind

There's nothing I can do
There's nothing I can do
There's nothing I can say
There's nothing I can say
I can say

@[songyone:7545] I believe you're right on target. I totally identify with this song, not as the "vagrant" brother but as the one who can do nor say anything that will change him.

The Band – The Weight Lyrics 10 years ago
Yeah ... right-O ... how about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Weight ... a simple Google search and wikipedia has very clear information and direct quotes from Levon Helm.
I'm a Christian as well, but to try and pin a Christian meaning on this song is absurd.

The Band – The Weight Lyrics 10 years ago
Spoiler alert? Only for idiots.
What a puerile misinterpretation.

Firstly it's not "I will fix your rag" It's "I will fix your RACK".

Secondly, the slang term "fanny" is used almost exclusively in UK and Australia (or would have been at the time this song was written) whereas the band members are American and Canadian. Fanny was actually a girl's name, and there was a famous celebrity named Fanny Flagg. If it were a commonly understood "potty" word then no one at that time in American history, would've named their child as such.

Thirdly, Big Pink is the name of the HOUSE that Rick Danko rented, and in which the album was recorded. The address is 56 Parnassus Lane, West Saugerties, New York. It was called Big Pink because of the pink siding.

Fourthly, and most importantly, your rendering makes any kind of real communication impossible, as anytime anyone ever says the words "Go down" then it must mean having oral sex; and if anyone says "bag" or "dog" or names their daughter Annalee, then they MUST be talking about something sexual.

And finally, if you'd done a very simple Google search for The Weight and looked on wikipedia, you'd've seen that Levon Helms gives just about all one needs to know about the meaning of the song.

I'll say it again, you're an idiot, and anyone who would pay attention to ANYTHING you say (and I mean anything, as in, you've basically proven that you're unworthy to wipe someone's butt) is themselves worthy of nothing but contempt and scorn.

It's rare that I turn on someone in such fashion but seeing the sort of filth coming from a person who then says that his mind "doesn't live in the gutter" when in fact every word he says SCREAMS the opposite, is enough to make me want to smack somebody in the mouth.

Be glad we're not in the same room together.

Steely Dan – Godwhacker Lyrics 11 years ago
I believe you (along with Bolosky and TMiller68) are correct. There's no allegory here at all. The only place I believe you're incorrect is the "lower case". This is, as Bolosky said (below your comment) about the God of the Bible. For me, as much as I know that Steely Dan music has always been worldly, fleshly, in a word evil to some degree (I mean even the name of the group for crying out loud, is from Naked Lunch ... but I digress ...), but I've always enjoyed the imagination, high talent, and execution. I suppose it's inevitable that the truth comes out when Christ said, in so many words "They are either for us or against us". There's no inbetween. And sooner or later it just comes out clearly. :(

You couldn't be more wrong on this one.
It's precisely the opposite of what you've said.

ta_selles, I find your comments on this song to be the most thoughtful. Thanks for taking the time to put all of this down.

Monsters of Folk – The Right Place Lyrics 13 years ago
Great tune. Very catchy. But containing self-righteous, and blasphemous lyrics. The very idea that a creature (and a fallen one at that) would demand an answer from his Creator (see the book of Job for when a comparatively righteous man calls God to the table, and observe the necessary and humbling results), and not only to demand an immediate answer, but to suggest that God might (or rather does, and needs to recognise in himself) have some unjustness in Him, and then to suggest that God (you know, the omnipotent Creator?) needs to "think long and hard about it"; and then, to top it all off, to say the he (the singer/writer) is able to find goodness in what he does and says is the empitome of insanity, self-righteousness, delusion, laziness, and stupidity. If he wants an answer from God, he'll have to go about getting the answers via the means that God has provided -- through the prayerful, humble, and diligent use of the reading, and the hearing of the preaching, and submissino to His Word (the books of the Old and New Testaments, and them alone!). Other than that, the only "immediate" answer he can expect from God is going to be the face-to-face rebuke he'll incur at the Last Day. He won't be opening his face to the Lord on that Day, I can assure you of that.
