The Killers – Believe Me Natalie Lyrics 11 years ago
The part that kind of 'reveals' the meaning of this song to me is 'you led the station, down to the floor with speculation...what was it for?'.. OK so he keeps telling this chick, Natalie, that it's her last chance. It sounds like she led a bunch of guys on...In my opinion he's basically telling a girl named Natalie he's not gonna keep chasing her....either surrender her heart or he's gone. idk..that's just my interpretation and feel of the song. the parts where he puts the most emotion in it was that part where he says 'you led the station'....etc

The Killers – Andy, You're a Star Lyrics 11 years ago
Listening to this song, I picture it almost like he's singing it to a kid that is throwing all his effort to some white trash girl who's just gonna break his heart...and he's got all this potential, but he doesn't realize it...he's too caught up chasing tail. So, Brandon's telling him, 'promise me she's not your world, cuz you're a star.' and maybe you or nobody else sees it...but i do. that's kinda how i feel this song.

Dave Matthews Band – Typical Situation Lyrics 11 years ago
WHEN HE SAYS, 'i can see three corners from this corner' HE IS SAYING THAT HE IS ABLE TO SEE ALL PERSPECTIVES, NOT JUST HIS OWN. THEN, 'two is the perfect number, but one well everybody's happy, everybody's free.' IN OTHER WORDS, IT'S ALWAYS EASIER TO SEE ONLY ONE CORNER (one perspective, that one being your OWN), BUT IT'S ALSO THE IGNORANT WAY TO BE. THIS SONG IS ABOUT THE ABILITY, OR INABILITY, OF PEOPLE TO BE OPEN-MINDED AND NOT JUDGE ONE ANOTHER FOR BEING DIFFERENT, OR SEEING THINGS FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. IT'S ABOUT BEING ABLE TO SEE ALL THINGS FROM MORE THAN ONE 'CORNER' OR PERSPECTIVE.

The Killers – A Dustland Fairytale Lyrics 13 years ago
Song's def about Flowers' mother in some aspects....but it's MORE THAN THAT! It's about love! Love in Las Vegas! The shallow women out there! Heartache/break! Come on people!!! Can't you feel it!!!

He's talking about Vegas when he says the wind don't blow, the sky won't snow, the bird don't sing, the good girls die....it all ties in with the desert/the cold-hearted ways of a busy, party town!

"Cinderella don't you go to sleep, it's such a bitter form of refuge. Don't you know the kingdom's under siege, and everybody needs you" I believe this is talking about his mother dying, but ALSO about any girl who may have broken his heart/fallen out of love with him. AGAIN, as I've said many times before....Brandon Flowers' lyrical genius allows him to focus multi-dimensionally with the same lyrics....meaning that he can take several emotions and portray them in through the same lyrical content.

Brandon Flowers – Right Behind You Lyrics 13 years ago
While I'm not super Christian, I find myself drawn to this song. As somebody who knows what type of person Brandon Flowers is, I cannot believe that this song is ENTIRELY and only restricted to religious meaning. Look at his body of works (via The Killers and in his solo career): his lyrics are complex, and there is more than one dimension to most songs. I believe that this song is no different. There is absolutely no doubt that this song is dedicated to his religious faith...but at the same time,I choose to listen to it through the ears of a romantiscist. As so many other of the Flowers'/The Killers' songs have been made of, I believe this song carries some romanticism about it, although...again, I can't deny that it is deeply sprinkled with religious/spiritual inspiration.

Bottom line: Am I the only one who believes that Brandon Flowers is smart enough to realize that when he's writing these songs he is placing multi-dimensional emotions/emphases on them??????!

Brandon Flowers – Playing With Fire Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with almost all of you on this one! I never thought about this being about his mormonism (or religion alone), but it DOES make a lot of sense. More than anything, I believed it to be about sin, and surrounding oneself with temptation. Now, I still believe that, but also factor in the fact that his father was a mormon, and the line "I'm not afraid of you no more". He starts saying "Daddy I'm not gonna tell you that I'm sorry, there ain't nothin you can do to change my mind". So, anytime in this song that he's addressing another person in this song, you have to assume it's his father. (other than "you know you're gonna hurt somebody tonight....here is he is talking to himself, probably through his father's voice in his head). Overall, great song. So many people I allow to hear this music (Flowers/Killers) think it "weird". I don't know why they don't appreciate the beauty of deep, meaningful lyrics and a great sound at the same time!!

Brandon Flowers – Only The Young Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with you. Good job of putting it simply! We could go into so much detail (as I already have in some ways), but you hit the nail right on the head....that's what I believe it's all about. Struggling, fighting your way towards the "sunshine". The "old" are those who have allowed life's struggles to swallow them, to make them bitter/jilted. The "young" aren't necessarily young at age at all...but young in heart. They've made a conscious commitment not to allow the world and it's sometimes cold ways to become a factor that influences their daily way of thinking/believing. Therefore, it is "Only the young" that can break away from the cold, dark days....and bask in the sunshine. I think he refers to the "old" when he says "or are you caught up in the lie". I think the "LIE" is the thought that one cannot change their own destiny.

I'm not sure...I can't deny that there is a GREAT possibility that Mormonism played a major role in the lyrics of this song...but we all want to relate to the lyrics of a song in a way that suits us best. I could argue that because I am the youngest of 5 children, and Brandon is the youngest of 6, maybe I understand his lyrics better.

Overall, I'll say this: I think that most artists are very open-minded. I don't (and I am an avid Flowers/Killers fan) for a second believe that Flowers allows religious (especially just one religion) views to dictate his lyrics controllingly. I believe this song is just overall more about LIFE in general. I think it has RELIGIOUS, SPIRITUAL, but just also PHILOSOPHICAL references. I could probably go on, it's a motivational song....to limit this to JUST religion (especially just ONE) would be to take away from it, in my opinion. I think that Flowers is much too open-minded and thoughtful...I think his motivations and feelings behind his lyrics in this song (as in most of his) are multi-factorial and influenced by a slew of topics...from religion to upbringing, life experiences to love, and I just believe he has a deep soul, he is a thinker. no doubt.

Brandon Flowers – Only The Young Lyrics 13 years ago
I will generally say that I think this is a POSITIVE, UPLIFTING song by Flowers. I don't think he means to be negative at all in it, I think he is truly sincere when he says that the sun will shine again. I believe when he asks "are you looking for the sign?? Or are you caught up in the blind?" I believe he is saying that those who do not SEE, or do not REALIZE that they are in control of their own fate, their own destiny, and their own happiness are blind. They aren't even "looking for the signs", they don't want to believe.

The young are the young AT HEART, not in age. The "wind", is that which one allows to blow them off course.
The "people there, lovely as you'd ever care" are past ancestors from multiple generations ago, enjoying the simplicity of life back then....that's how I picture it anyways. And when he says "baby you can start again laughing in the open air", I think he's saying that we can reclaim that innocence/purity/simplicity.

My OVERALL analysis (because I can get so deep it becomes ridiculously long....I just deleted at least 1,000 words before coming to this):

This song is about
1. Being happy

2. How we've come (through the dilution of generations from our original ancestors...and the heritage they upheld) to forget the simplicity and lifestyle that people once lived.

3. It's about being lost, being in a world of sin and darkness.....and fighting, scratching and crawling your way out of it.

4. It's about BELIEVING! Believing that, if you really want to, you can bask in the shining sun (happiness) of life, it's all up to you, and how young your heart is ("young" being pure, not allowing it to become bitter through life's experiences and downfalls).

5. I'd just like to add that, as I listen to this song I picture this: A man with a beard and a winter jacket...all heavily garbed with winter gear treading through a land: a cold, dark, snowy, and nightmarish land...with blackened/naked trees, thunder and lightning, and coldness/darkness in every sense of it around him, scared and yet determined...to find his way out. He's looking around him with heightened senses in all directions...very fearfully, while walking anxiously in one. He's looking back to past days of green pastures, happy moments, sun shining, etc....(in these flashbacks, all is peaceful and beautiful). And, when listening to the song, at the moment of 2:49 in the song, I can just PICTURE a sudden erasure of the fear/anxiety, replaced by a look of determination to make it. He rips his winter jacket off, cold and naked from the waste up, running/sprinting through the frozen, dark land towards an area where it is suddenly brightly lit by sunlight, warm and happy. He finally finds it, and I picture that as the song goes "Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh," this man is basking in sheer joy of the sunlight and happiness that he has regained, spinning in circles with his arms in the air and his head up at the sun.

So, this is my own vision, listen to the song with this in mind, and the reference points to which I made (2:49) and tell me if you FEEL this, the way I do??
