Bad Religion – My Head Is Full of Ghosts Lyrics | 10 years ago |
The guy who wrote this is an expert in evolution (as in neodarwinism). When he says We are the pilots of ultra-violent ancestry, he probably refers to our ancestors' behaviour, which is part of us, part of our genes. We are not alone, inside each living being there's a ton of ancestors, a genetic heritage, things such as practical instincts like being afraid of lightning and/or a basic set of instructions for everyday life (look for food when you're hungry, sleep when you're tired, etc.). And of course our ancestors are also in our culture, which is also inside of us, the things you learned (and cared about) in school, the books you read with attention (it's like the author is in some part of your mind), the deep values your parents (hopefully) gave you. I guess the message is we can be ourselves, despite such influences, such intruders (ghosts), by zest (courage, will) and artistry (skill). We can overcome what's bad, we don't have to act like animals, or like our ancestors, we can be better than that. We don't need exorcism to get rid of this bad influence, we just need a key to our own freedom. |

The Cardigans – Lead Me Into the Night Lyrics | 11 years ago |
For me this is about finding someone who'll stick through the night (and not someone who'll be long gone before daylight...). It's easy to find some company for the light, happy moments. Now having someone to lead you through the night is quite exquisite. She probably had someone like that, to just be there when she needed the most (i.e. the lonely nights), but fucked up somehow, looking for glitter and gold. Now she sails on boats made of sand... |
Metric – Clone Lyrics | 11 years ago |
She's done bad things, but she did what she had to do. Problem is her perfect image (the one on the photograph) is gone, she's tainted now, like everyone you know. Pointing that out isn't gonna help, it's too late, and although she regrets it, she knows it was necessary (otherwise she wouldn't be here --the aftermath-- now). |
Metric – Dreams So Real Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I disagree with screamingly. It's not about kids being better than us, it's about all of us (and maybe especially the kids) ignoring reality, forgetting the past, not living up to (or fighting for) the dreams we once had. "When I get to the bottom of it I sink Seems like nothing I said Ever meant anything But a headline over my head Thought I made a stand Only made a scene There's no feast for the underfed All the unknown, dying or dead Keep showing up in my dreams They stand at the end of my bed Have I ever really helped anybody but myself" She dreamed about her fans, people who listened to her music, and wonders if she's ever helped anyone (any of the unknown fans, alive or gone). Wonders if she made a difference, if her songs had any power at all, and she sinks (depression) with the possible/probable answer. "Our parents, daughters, and sons Believed in the power of songs What if those days are gone My memory is strong Anyone not dying is dead And baby it won't be long So shut up and carry on The scream becomes a yawn" Generations (ours and our parent's) believed in protest songs, in asking the right questions, but these days seem to be gone. The memory remains, but that might be it, just a memory. Have we become too lazy and tired to keep screaming? Might as well shut up and carry on, it all goes so fast anyway... |
The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The light that never goes out is hope for eternal love. Here's a Morrissey quote: "When you’re a teenager and in your early twenties it seems desperately eternal and excruciatingly painful. Whereas as you grow older you realise that most things are excruciatingly painful and that is the human condition. Most of us continue to survive because we’re convinced that somewhere along the line, with grit and determination and perseverance, we will end up in some magical union with somebody. It’s a fallacy, of course, but it’s a form of religion. You have to believe. There is a light that never goes out and it’s called hope." from "I've always felt like an exile" by Andrew Billen in The Times (30th May 2006) |
Ida Maria – Devil Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Born under a bad sign! Also, it's nuclear war, i.e., the cold war, not new clear war. |
