Arcade Fire – In the Backseat Lyrics 7 years ago
Back when I was a teenager and my English wasn't so good, I loved this song just for the emotion in Regine's interpretration, especially at the very end. Probably my favorite song of the album, without any particular reason.

If some people are correct and Alice was indeed her mother (a quick research told me she was her maternal grandmother though), then it's about her mother dying when she was very young. Remember when you're a kid and driving in the car with your parents? You're always sitting in the backseat and your parents are driving the car for you.

However, Alice died and the narrator was then pushed in the front seat (i.e. leader of the family or being an adult) and "learning to drive" by herself every since. Keep in mind too that the first people to teach how to drive, usually, are... your parents.

This song is about becoming an adult way too soon, without having the parental figure (mother for a daughter, father for a son) to assist and guide you. In short, it's a song about a parent dying when the child was still too young. It's absolutely heartbreaking. And it's absolutely beautiful.

Foo Fighters – I Should Have Known Lyrics 10 years ago
Like other people on this forum I don’t think all Grohl’s songs are automatically about Cobain. This one probably is, but it could also be about someone else, based on the line “I should’ve known, I’ve been here before”.

I think this song is about someone with self-destructive behaviour (drugs, alcoholism, suicidal tendencies, eating disorders, etc.) and how you feel really stupid for not seeing it coming when you could have helped person.

What I love the most in this song is the bass solo by Krist Novoselic: Amazing! I could listen to that part over and over. Mixed with Grohl’s voice, you can really feel the anger.

Katy Perry – Hot N Cold Lyrics 10 years ago
Ah. The Hot and Cold guys. Aren't they annoying? Pretty simple lyrics: she's dating a guy who's always changing his mind and playing the hot and cold game - that is, he's into you one minute and giving you the cold shoulder the next. You have a great time and seem to be hitting it off well and then he's ambiguous about plans he wants to make with you. You're confused and don't know what to think anymore.

In this song, I love her interpretation, because she's just so frustrated and annoyed, with good reasons.

She doesn't say it in the song, but basically, the one thing to do when dealing with a Hot and Cold guy (or girl) is to walk away. Not worth your time or making yourself crazy.

Fefe Dobson – Julia Lyrics 11 years ago
It is about one of her friends who had an eating disorder. Unfortunately, I can relate what she says, because my former best friend had an eating disorder. I really wanted to help her. I was there for her and doing my best to do so.

To make a long story short, the disease destroyed our friendship, which is why the "Tell me this is not the end" and "So this is goodbye" really hit me. Because as much as you love this person, you can't do everything for them. They need professional help. If they don't listen to you, you have to leave, or you will get hurt yourself.

Katy Perry – Not Like the Movies Lyrics 11 years ago
I just watched a video of Katy explaining the song. She wrote the song in two parts, before and after meeting her now ex-husband. And from here I won't repeat what she said.

In the first part, I think she is saying she was engaged before. Unfortunately, it ended because it wasn't right, or "like in the movies". She didn't feel like Snow White, like she was in a fairytale.

After, she says that you SHOULD wait for the right person, even if it seems to take forever and you just want to settle down. You should get those little butterflies and feel like you have met your match. Don't settle for less.

She gets a little spiritual (not sure if this is the right word) when she says that it's crazy there's someone out there, probably looking for her too, who's perfect her (How I met your mother, anyone?).

David Gray – This Year's Love Lyrics 11 years ago
Lovely song. So refreshing to listen to such a song from a guy's perspective.

This is song about fear of falling in love, again. Although this person seems to be glad to FINALLY be in a relationship, he is holding back a little, probably because he's been hurt several times before and doesn't want to live that pain again.

In other words, this person is "damaged goods", if I may. It's almost as if he wants to be sure that this person is THE ONE, because he doesn't want to be broken-hearted again in case it fails.

But finally, as the title says, it's "this year's love" so, it probably won't last...

Taylor Swift – All Too Well Lyrics 11 years ago
Clearly it's the same man as in "We are never..." Not only because she has stated that the album was all about HIM, but because there are a couple of similar references to that song such as "And you call me up again just to break me like a promise".

Without reading any other comments, I think she's reminiscing about that relationship and doesn't really know where it went wrong and why. She's confused, because they seemed to be having such a good time together. She has many specific memories of the good times. However, she can't seem to put her finger on why it ended, thus making the "pleasant" memories painful.

Taylor Swift – Stay Stay Stay Lyrics 11 years ago
A perfect example of when "let's stay friends" will work. When the romantic relationship is over, because there is only friendship.

Taylor Swift – Begin Again Lyrics 11 years ago
As I really listened through and through to the record today, I noticed how Being Again was the perfect ending/closure to the album (as musicrocks13 confirms). If Red is about one man who made her go through one hell of a roller coaster (We are never..., Last Time, State of Grace), "Begin again" is the start of a new chapter. She is moving on with someone who appears to be a lot nicer than the male inspiration for "Red" (the album). At last.

On a P.S. note, it reminded me of Enchanted; a song about hope in love.

Lana Del Rey – Ride Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm looking forward to read other people's interpretation for this one, because at this point, I don't really know.

I certainly feel like the most important lyrics are:

"Been tryin’ hard not to get into trouble,
But I, I’ve got a war in my mind.

I just ride, just ride"

It seems that when you have so much on your plate at the same time, that your life as been so insane, chaotic, bad, full of problems, all you want to do is ignore everything and run away (metaphorically).

Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness Lyrics 11 years ago
I've listened to the song and watched the video quite a few times. So, I think that this song is about moving on from an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend who has passed away, maybe unexpectedly. Lana sings that she's sad he/she died, but she is trying to move on, even though she will always miss him/her. Kinda like the Power of Goodbye by Madonna. She tries to kiss goodbye the summertime sadness that his/her death brought her.

I think the "drive" part could be about moving on, but also, like Lahhva said, could be about reminiscing on their time together and celebrate their past relationship. Have no regrets and only remember the best.

The video is interesting, because it is quite literal to the song, except that the roles are reversed and the ending is not so positive. Lana (I'll use the actors' names) is the one dying by committing suicide. Jaime King is wearing the red dress and drives a car with her bad baby (i.e. Lana) on her heavenly side. However, unlike in the song, Jaime fails to move on and commits suicide.

Finally, I find it interesting that the girls don't end up together in heaven. I think it means that the relationship was passionate love - that is, it was a summer love more than anything. It was not going to last a lifetime anyway. In short, they were not soul mates, but they had fun for a short period of time. In the song, Lana embraces that part of her life before embarking on another chapter.

Anyway, that's my interpretation. Great song and video!

Rachael Yamagata – Sidedish Friend Lyrics 13 years ago
I hate it when people start their comments with "I so understand this song because I lived it", but it is the case here for me.

The song is about a friend who doesn't want to be your best friend and calls you whenever she needs you and will not call you otherwise. It's as if the other person is ashamed of her friend. I had a "friendship" like that and I laughed hysterically when I heard:

We can stay together separately
And we won't be lonely at all

Because this "friend" used similar words to describe our relationship. It's okay, cause we always think of each other.

I don't think it is necessatily about a sexual or intimate relationship. I think it is about an actual friendship. Or at least that's my interpretation.

Lady GaGa – Americano Lyrics 13 years ago
I think she said that this song was about the Arizona immigration law. It would certainly fit the "Don't try to catch me" lines.

Also, I thought she sings:
I don't speak your languigioso

and not:
I don't speak your language oh no.

The first line would fit the context of the Arizona immigration law. It has this sort of condescending tone of an American trying to speak Spanish.

Taylor Swift – Enchanted Lyrics 13 years ago
In the French language, when you meet someone for the first time, you say "Je suis enchanté(e) de vous rencontrer". (I'm enchanted to meet you) Enchanté = enchanted. Hope this helps!

Stromae – Dodo Lyrics 13 years ago
This is quite a sad song, despite the happy and energetic beat.
For the non-French speakers, this song about domestic violence. "Dodo l'enfant do. L'enfant dormira bien vite..." is a very popular children lullaby. Stromae sings to a young child, telling him that the domestic violence going on between his parents is "normal", because (a) his mother is unfaithful and (b) his father's father was probably violent too. He shouldn't try to intervene, because his father might hurt him too. He tells him to try to fall asleep and it'll go away.

Madonna – The Power of Goodbye Lyrics 13 years ago
I think I read somewhere that Madonna wrote this song about her relationship with Sean Penn and the fact that he was (apparently) physically abusive. If so, it certainly fits well the context and the complexity of abusive relationships and the fact that you want to leave, but don't want to/can't.

All and all, it also fits the idea of being in a difficult relationship where one is really in love and the other is just a "player". At some point, you realize that this isn't going anywhere and it's better for you to go and move on.

It's a good moving on song.

Plumb – Cut Lyrics 13 years ago
First, I must say I am quite sadden to read that so many people cut themselves. I highly encourage all who relate to this song for this particular reason to seek help. Seriously.

That being said, my interpretation, used in the context of Vampire Diaries (a show that I don't watch but read Wiki entries about it), is a little different. It appears that one of these caracters was deeply hurt in the past and has some trust issues. For him to go this far in a relationship is pretty big, because he's opening himself to someone and last time he did, he was hurt. He's reluctant because he does not want to be hurt again. However, opening himself to her might also help him move on for good...

Ariane Moffatt – Poussière D'ange Lyrics 13 years ago
Simple enough (for anyone who's fluent in French): it's about an unplanned pregnancy and subsequent abortion, because the person isn't ready to be a mother yet.

The singer is giving advice to the pregnant woman saying: you'd be a great mother, but not now. You're not ready. Later perhaps.

Lady GaGa – Born This Way Lyrics 13 years ago
I love it. It reminds me of "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera. I know, not exactly the same music, but the lyrics are somewhat similar in the meaning. The difference is probably that she speaks more openly about accepting homosexuality, which I think is a really good thing (and about time someone this famous does).

I don't get the comparisons with Madonna's "Express Yourself". Actually, I personally don't get any comparisons between GaGa and Madonna. If you read about GaGa you'll discover that Madonna wasn't really an influence for her. Andy Warhol is. But I understand why people would compare her to Madonna considering that Madonna has pretty much done everything. Still, time to move on people! GaGa is doing her own thing.

In conclusion, I predict this will be the new anthem for the LGBT communities. ;)

Adele – Hometown Glory Lyrics 13 years ago
Not always the best song to listen to when you are homesick. It can be either comforting or depressing.

I agree with other people on this page: Although it is clearly about London (Adele's hometown), anyone can listen to this song and reminisce about their own hometown.

And I'll admit it: I first heard this song on Skins (I'm not from the UK). I love the first two seasons and I think that "Hometown Glory" was very well used in that scene.

Sugababes – Can We Call A Truce Lyrics 13 years ago
Beautiful song. I love it. I love the strings. The #1 song on my iPod (it was played over 200 times). Helps me fall asleep.

Pretty simple: a couple is drifting apart because they are constantly fighting. They are trying to figure out how to make it work.

This can apply to all sorts of relationships - romantic or friendship. There is a point when you don't know how to make it work. There is something going on and you want to find a solution, but it seems like nothing is working. Sometimes, you don't even know why it's not working and reminisce about how good it used to be.

Taylor Swift – Never Grow Up Lyrics 13 years ago
Not enough words to describe how beautiful it is. I love that Taylor's music is targeted at people from age 5 to 50, because the youngster might understand the message behind it -- that is, enjoy being a child and innocent, and let your parents take care of you. You might miss it when you're older and don't forget you have the rest of your life to be a grown up with all the responsibilities and problems that come with it.

Lastly, this song reminds me of a French expression that says: "Si jeunesse savait et si vieillesse pouvait" which loosely translates has: "if youngsters knew and if elders could".

Taylor Swift is a great songwriter. I love how she is an open book about her real life experiences. It's so well written. I can't wait to hear the materials she will write in the future (finding long-lasting love, marriage, kids). Whatever she writes about it's going to be great.
