Hop Along – How Simple Lyrics 5 years ago
I'm surprised at the lack of comments - such a great song and the jam at the end is transcendent.

Most of the song is pretty clear, it's a teenage couple breaking up. I'm more confused about the "pictures of relatives" line. Is it that she comes from a broken/divorced home and feels that she'll end up that way, also?

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 8 years ago
@[speakforthwords:9169] -- This is one of the best written synapses of the song - nice work. Although, I think the interpretation of her father, might be slightly off. I don't really get the "abusive or at least negligent". To me, it seems more of a strict and religious father, whom she would never want to know what happened between her and Sufjan. Not necessarily a sinister figure or situation, but she's definitely in deep trouble.

Having grown up in a similar household, I was petrified of disappointing my parents and/or the punishments that came along with it, thus "scared", but never actually scared for my physical well-being. Maybe I'm naive, or maybe I'm inserting a little personal narrative into it.

Fugazi – Blueprint Lyrics 8 years ago
I think there's an aspect of self worth here.

Something like, if you're buying into the common belief that one's worth lies in your public persona, or possessions, or money, or job - when any or all of that is gone, it's a rude awakening. In other words, wiping the smile off your face.

I do appreciate that he offers to help - "But you can still come around
In fact I invite you down
Maybe together we can wipe that smile off your face."

@[bbasedbgodb:4745] Great synapsis - source? Is it interpretation or do you have background? Not that I'm doubting your plot, it seems logical.

Morrissey – The Teachers Are Afraid Of The Pupils Lyrics 9 years ago
It was 1996 and I was going through a rough time with my (then) wife. After weeks/months of turmoil, I found out that the source of her emotional distance and, at times, disdain for me, was that she had been cheating on me.

After an angry outburst, alone in my basement, I walked upstairs into my living room and turned on the hi-fi. Southpaw Grammar was disc #1 in the changer and played automatically.

I sat on the ground... ...then comes the bit where he sings "to be finished would be a relief" over and over again...

and then the gigantic, dissonant, cathartic build!

..then the bit - "I'm very glad the spring has come/
The sun shines out so bright/
All the birds that are on the trees/
Are singing for delight"

I swear through the course of this song - recounting the sadness, heartbreak and torture of the previous months - and given the new news, I had fallen out of love with her and realized what I had to do. Our divorce was final 3 months later...

The National – 29 Years Lyrics 9 years ago
@[Miniemetoo:2513] -- Thanks for expressing the meaning in this way. I think the other interpretations are valid, but I've always identified with your interpretation. I think of my wife when I hear this song.
We met when I had just turned 30, hence "I dreamed about you for 29 years". Amazingly, when we finally got together (I ended up moving across the country for her), it really felt like I missed her for all the years of my life before then.

You're thinking of "It's A Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart, not Cary Grant.

Grandaddy – Miner At The Dial-A-View Lyrics 10 years ago
Thanks for sharing your memories, I have similar memories from the same timeframe. This, like many other Grandaddy songs, has somewhat of a dystopian feel to it (at least to me) and I love the cold feeling of separation I get when I listen. Sometimes I perceive the Dial-A-View as it's more of a memory, or a memory application that he's not currently looking at "her" car or house, but viewing an old archive of that place/time...

Adele – Someone Like You Lyrics 12 years ago
All very good interpretations, this song has a very dear place in my heart. I'd like to make a quick correction though - the 6th line is actually:

"It ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light."
