Jessejace: Basically your gripe is that, instead of Johnny Cash singing over a NiN song, he made a Johnny Cash song... In reality, Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" is considered one of the best covers of all time, especially when put in the context of the man's life and ultimate death. Not everything has to sound "diatonic, and dissonant" to be beautiful or good. |

Wow, really bad interpretations so far. Let me break it down for you... The song is not based on the play "Wicked" it is based on the novel "The Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum. The novel was intended as an allegory for various political conflicts in the American 1890s. Many scholars believe that the Wicked Witch of the West represents the American West or, more broadly, nature. I believe that Hansi is using The Wicked Witch as the latter metaphor nature. "There is a demon An evil mind Inside us Oh I know, I know We all know the rules When water will be shed The wicked witch is...." Here Hansi sets the tone for the rest of the song. He alludes to the fact that most people have heard some version of the tale of the Wicked Witch's demise; "We all know the rules", but he laments the flippant disregard all children are raised to have for her, making us seem like the cold and cruel ones; "There is a demon, an evil mind, inside us" "This is the end of all the miracles Farewell to you yellow brick road" With the passing of the Wicked Witch, the magic of nature dissolves forever. In the allegorical sense which many interpret the novel, the purity of nature must be sacrificed in favor of industry, population growth, and manifest destiny. The violent, yet pure witch of the West, though heartless at times, embodies all the magic in nature, destructive but also beautiful. In an ironic twist, it is her magic that allows us to feel the magic and fantasy we experience as children. We must bid farewell to the yellow brick road and the positive aspects of magic upon her passing. "Everything she is asking for It all belongs to her" The silver shoes (they were silver in the novel as well) belonged to her deceased sister (who was also "wicked"). Presumably, she is the rightful heir to these possessions. Hansi is pointing out that, despite how we've been brought up to feel about the witch, she did in fact have rights to everything she had asked for. This is a metaphor for natures right to all it demands. Nature existed first, we destroy its purity and then bemoan nature when it doesn't conform to our demands. "Truth has changed, her voice it stays the same" This is another interesting line in the song. Humans have rewritten history countless times. The wrath of nature is always judged by how it affects our lives. We only revere nature when it's pleasant, never when it brings death and destruction to our species. Despite this, objectively speaking, nature has always been this way. In other words, her voice (the Wicked Witch) is changeless and eternal. I'll stop here. The rest of the song can be interpreted along these lines. |
