The Beatles – Doctor Robert Lyrics 10 years ago
He administered the LSD by spiking their coffee with it - take a drink from his special cup.

However, I do believe the name Doctor Robert as a pseudonym was selected because of the Huxley novel.

The "we do the dance" stanza makes way more sense if it's about sex rather than cocaine.

I thought drugs at first when hearing the "I've been into the plants," line, but after the second or third listen I recanted. I think these few lines are merely there to remind us of youthful innocence (before the "what's with all the changes" stanza), or possibly a reference to fertilization.

Animal Collective – Grass Lyrics 10 years ago
The whole "what's with all the changes" stanza is hinting at growing older and more cynical, and about recognizing that love makes you vulnerable because it creates the potential for loss.

I feel the "very nervous" stanza is more about addressing the awkwardness in first sexual encounters. I think when most of us guys remember our first loves, we can relate to this stanza. You may be right, however.

I think the other poster had it right. He's looking at her straddling him and hoping she won't leave him.

All the body parts/anatomy are there to add to the physicality of the song.

Animal Collective – In the Flowers Lyrics 10 years ago
I'd have to counter that. The song is definitely about a desire for transcendence, but it doesn't necessarily imply explicitly a drug-induced transcendence.

This semester I'm taking both British Romantics and American Literature (which covers the American Romantics extensively), and this desire for transcendence through nature is one of the strongest threads through the era. The more I study, the more I'm convinced Avey is an incredibly well-read man. Even Amanita, which IS about drugs at face-value, has something deeper going on. I'm convinced Amanita is a psychedelic reading of Thoreau's Walden.

Drugs are one way to reach this state, so in that aspect this song is about drugs. I can certainly relate to the line "If I could just leave my body for a night," followed by the euphoric explosion of sound. But drugs are merely one method to achieve this state, and the song is about the state, not the method.

Animal Collective – I Think I Can Lyrics 10 years ago
This song seems a little more general than most people are taking it for, which is fair enough. Panda Bear tends to write very specific songs, so having something a little more open-ended from him is a bit unusual.

This song seems to be about becoming derailed from the search for goodness, spiritual enlightenment, whatever you want to call it. It's about realizing you've become wrapped up in self-service in your day-to-day living. The specific issues here are not relevant - be they narcotics, relationships, Animal Collective, whatever - because all of these things can have the same effect of becoming the mundane day-to-day activities you engage yourself in while losing focus of your higher purpose.

Animal Collective – Summertime Clothes Lyrics 11 years ago
Since one of my favourite lines is wrong here, I'll offer a quick correction.

"As we end up at an easy pace" should read "Let's meander at an easy pace."

The lyrics to this song strive to recreate a certain aspect of what summer is, and I particularly love the use of the word "meander" in this line.

Just wanna point out the synth noises are like audio hallucinations from a psychedelic trip.

The title could be referencing ego death?

Sufjan Stevens – Let's Hear That String Part Again, Because I Don't Think They Heard It All the Way Out in Bushnell Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song is about repeated emphasis on a certain string section that Sufjan feels may not have been heard all the way out in Bushnell, Ill.

Mother Mother – The Sticks Lyrics 11 years ago
One small error, probably a typo. Instead of "I'll being my papa's tricks," it should read "I'll bring my papa's tricks." Also, the actual studio recording doesn't have the "yeah" after the first line and Ryan sings "I'll bring my heart," instead of "might bring my heart."

I feel very strongly that this song is about wanting to get away from the philosophical biases and preconceived notions society delivers. Ryan wants to spend some time without any voices other than his own in an attempt to find correct ideologies.

Fucking incredible song.

Modest Mouse – Lampshades on Fire Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is quite clearly about the ecological damage the human race is doing. We go and overdevelop, set up cities, and are completely caught up raping our natural resources to serve ourselves. It's as though we're busy partying while in the process of wrecking everything. We continually expand, move from place to place doing the same thing over and over again. There's even been talk of having to possibly find ways to settle Mars or other planets once we wreck our own.

Pretty clear cut. Religion tends to use fear to constrict free thought. I'm assuming it's a "religion vs. spirituality" thing, rather than "religion vs. non-spirituality" though.

This song is about a frigid woman.
Also, it may not sound like it, but the first line is "She lookin' like Stonehenge in old England."

Modest Mouse – Teeth Like God's Shoeshine Lyrics 12 years ago
Basically, yes. Despite the many other Modest Mouse songs about religion and the religious sounding title, this song is about society generally selling itself out to capitalism gone wrong. The malls are the soon to be ghost towns... we're literally watching our economy being trashed because of our greed. So long, farewell, goodbye.

Modest Mouse – Teeth Like God's Shoeshine Lyrics 12 years ago
I wouldn't say Float On doesn't sound like any previous Modest Mouse, the melody style obviously has the undeniably dark beauty Modest Mouse tends to lean toward in most of their old songs. Sort of like a lullaby that makes you want to cry. With some yelling in it somewhere. The only thing that's really different about Float On is that it has a dance beat.

Lady GaGa – Judas Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm gonna go out on a limb here.. I'm gonna get hell from everyone here for this too, I know. I don't think "Judas" in this song is a human. I know she mentions him as a demon at one point, but I'm not so sure that line was as symbolic as we'd like to think. Remember a while ago when everyone was talking about the rumour that she sold her soul? I figure she's realized she's in a hell of a mess now. This is a song about it.

...The whole comment was a joke. The song is either called Untitled 09 or The Archers Bows Have Broken.

Brand New – Battalions Lyrics 13 years ago
Seriously? The chorus is pretty much what defines a song. When Untitled 09 appeared as The Archers Bows Have Broken on The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me, it had a slightly altered chord progression, and the the verses were totally redone. Untitled 09 is still undeniably a pre-production form of Archers.

The Police – Roxanne Lyrics 13 years ago
@unplannedautopsy No, that's what what he was saying at all. He was saying pointing out how red light can have a double meaning. Through the verses he says 'you don't have to put on the red light', referencing prostitution. But through the chorus, Sting sings 'put on the red light' over and over. This can just be a shortened form of the same phrase, cutting out the 'you don't have to', but there's a possibility it has a double meaning, and in the chorus by saying 'put on the red light' he is telling her to stop what's she's doing, like a car stops for a red light.

"drop the needle" is in reference to "you want a record you can move to.", i.e., a record player. without that line, the drugs argument holds no ground at all.

Brand New – In a Jar Lyrics 13 years ago
Almost spot on I think. I think the whole jar bit is an analogy saying that we've in a sense closed our selves in to our own understanding, everything seems to make sense to us scientifically, and yet we don't see God outside our jar, in the real world.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 13 years ago
I find it amazing that so many Christian "artists" only sing songs about running through fields of flowers with Jesus.

Grow up.

Listening to Sufjan is like reading the Psalms- you know, that book of songs in the Bible? Songs that actually meant something? Songs not only about joy and accomplishments, but frustrations, struggles, and an endless amount of questions? The songs that God knew we'd need, so He had them preserved until we were able to compile them into His Bible?

Yea, those ones.

While it is true that someone can interpret art in their own way, it is also true that an artist creates art to portray or represent his own thoughts or ideas. You are both right, and therefore both wrong.

Brand New also. I know, I know, a large portion of their songs ARE about failed relationships. But so many songs are deep, honest, non-corny religious songs, and most people don't even realize what they're listening to. Musically amazing too, but they've got nothing on Sufjan.

Cold War Kids – Don't Let Your Love Grow Away from Me Lyrics 13 years ago
CWK lyrics are usually pretty straightforward, since most are stories. I'm just not sure if the "Don't let your love grow away from me" is directed at God or the "you" he saw torn in two on Sunday.

Cold War Kids – Against Privacy Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is actually about their song writing lyrical style, which they received mixed opinions for by the media after their first release Robbers and Cowards.

Forget ex-girlfriends... we tell stories, we want to get you to join in.

We will talk about welfare - A reference to their song We Used To Vacation perhaps?

We will talk about sex - Probably Hair Down, where their uncommon view of sex is thrown out there (True love, it waits)

Talk about the Pope in Prada shoes - This one is obviously Passing the Hat, one of their most criticized songs for its lyrics.

We paint paintings, we write scenes for the stage...
