I disagree. The idea about drugs is a bit tedious. I try to AVOID associaing ASHES TO ASHES with drugs, for god's sake. I think this is literal- everything seems literal about it. "The stars look very different today" the stars look different in space to how they do on earth. "you've really made the grade" the landing is going well "tell my wife I love her very much" I think is a very emotional last line. The reply "she knows" sums this whole thing up, really. It reminds me of the episode of dr. who when the doctor drops into the pit, and his last line before he drops is "if you talk to rose, tell her... just tell her... oh, she knows," also the episode life on mars seems to be similar to it. I'm not saying this song was written about them, it's the other way round I think. When ground control concluded he was a junkie it broke my heart. great song. |

As for ashes to ashes, I have several things to say: first of all it's an unvelievably good song.
Second of all, I have my own interpretation of the lyrics. The mood of the song is a lot more resigned and given in to everything. He almost sounds like he's pleading in the last three verses. I think the drug references are not literal. This is someone who wanted to change who they are and what they're doing but their purpose follows them ("the little green wheels are following me") After that, here's the story just right down to the literal bones: major Tom called earth again, saying he's happy in space ("they got a message from the action man: i'm happy, hope you're happy too") and asked for their help to come back to earth ("wanna come down right now") but ground control came to the conclusion he was a junkie ("we know major Tom's a junkie" sang by ground control) and ignored his communications, leaving him out there.
Overall, awesome song, brilliantly performed and sang, amazingly done. |

the song could be a metaphor for being off your head on drugs but it could also be to do with space travel which I personally think is more interesting. |

It could still be about space oditty. Ashes to ashes was not a revelation of the true identity of major Tom, the story was that he called earth again to say that he was happy in space, but that he now wanted to come down to earth, but ground control came to the conclusion he was a junkie. I think this is after ashes to ashes, they abandoned him to die. |
