Kate Nash – Don't You Want to Share the Guilt? Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this has got to be one of her best songs, there's so much in it. In my opinion the other person in the song could potentially be anyone who she is close to (perhaps a boyfriend but not necessarily). She knows that something is wrong with this 'friend', which is why she is hesitant to go over ("I'm feeling kinda nervous"),and also that she won't be able to give them the support that they need (to the point that she feels sick "unwell" with worry) despite her having a responsibility of care ("I should go"), that comes with any close friendship.

When she gets there she sees that her friend is in a bad state: he/she doesn't care about their appearance ("wearing a towl"), has been having trouble sleeping ("eyes look dark") and is cut (self-harming). As a result, inviting her over, makes me think that the friend, acknowledging himself/herself that he/she has reached a real low, wants her (kate nash) to be different to everyone else and be the one person who can say the right thing.

But she asks him/her a question she already knows the answer to ("I say 'have you been crying?'), and confirms herself as one of those friends that (through no real fault of her own) will only be able to spout empty words. Her friend "still worries" her, but she is completely detached from him/her and the person knows this as they go through the motions of saying their "fine" and giving accounts of activities undertaken (probably lies).

The next verse 'Listen', is more complicated, but I think it's her thinking it's her pondering the questions, linked to suicidal thoughts, that the friend might be asking themself. At the end of the day she doesn't know ("I don't know").

But she can question how her friend got to this stage ("thinking is one of the most stressful things I've ever come across") and her inability to say the right thing to her friend is evidence for "not been able to articulate" whta she wants to say.

She goes on to talk about her own experiences- what helps her find peace ("I count the laps")- and the rhythm of the words is almost therapeutic. But as it gets quicker, the heavy use of "I" ("I think I should", "I'm going to", "I'd like to", '"I love", "I walked", "I'm still not sure") is noticable, and I think she demonstrates how isolated each one of us is. Cut off in our own little worlds and inherently self-absorbed... no matter how hard we try not to be. It's hard to relate to things you don't understand, if we're not the centre of our own universe then our experiences still are, and they restrict us. She's isolated in her pain too("When I'm quiet people think I'm sad"), and all those people at train stations are individuals that feel too.

This might seem a bit deep, but I think this quote by Albert Einstein is relevant:
'"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us 'universe', a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

For me, 'Don't you want to share the guilt?' is not just about the guilt of not being able to be there for a person you care about, it's about man's inability to ever truely empathise.

This has to be one of the most beautiful songs, their live performance of this last night was incredible... by far the best of their songs. It's most likely not at all what the song was intended to mean, but for me it reminds me of destructive relationships and domestic violence. There is a mixture of fear and love and disappointment, of a love that was beautiful and 'gold' becoming horribly 'rusted'. 'Don't think about it at all just keep your head low' and 'keep your heart close to the ground' simply make me think of those caught up in such violence, where love prohibits victims from seeking help to alleviate abuse, and the hearts and spirits are effectively trodden on and worn down.

In my opinion the video for this is done very well. Anyone who is particularly interested in art might agree that the distorted imagery of the faces in the water, in the video, likens to that of the work of the artist Francis Bacon. Facial features are deformed and put together to create a look somewhat disturbing, as is seen here. Personally I feel this represents our destructive nature of killing our own: going to war or simply fighting those we don't understand and are different to us.

'God bless us everyone. We're a broken people living under a loaded gun'. I think where it says 'everyone it is referring to all the varying nationalities of people who ask for God's blessing or help in their cause. Banksy said 'there is no exception to the rule that everyone thinks that they're an exception to the rules', and it is true and works here. It is not only people who do not look beyond their own needs but whole nations, too often going as far as dehumanising people in attempts to get what they want. In the end all attempts in receiving help from God are pointless as we're beyond repair, 'a broken people', who 'can't be outfought...' to such an extent, that our whole lives are dictated by violence and narcissism.

We pay for 'the sins of our hands, the sins of our tongue, the sins of our fathers, the sins of our young' with our detachment from God:

'And when I close my eyes tonight
To symphonies of blinding light
Like memories in cold decay
Transmissions echoing away
Far from the world of you and I
Where oceans bleed into the sky'

The gentleness with which we were created is a distant memory, and so is God a memory, 'in cold decay'. It is God 'echoing away', far from the evil humanity has created. To be 'saved' we need not look further than ourselves and the mistakes we do not learn from and the crimes we continue to committ.

Absolutely love this song. It's talking about those people who make you doubt yourself and take away all your confidence making you think that 'life is a little tired' of you. You need to learn to live happily ignoring those people who are 'soul assasins' because in the end you don't need them.

One Night Only – Say You Don't Want It Lyrics 13 years ago
I think he's trying to show the shallowness of it all. I agree it suggests he's from a lower background and it works with that image as it seems to show his isolation from everything he is talking about. He's not a part of it and he doesn't feel like love has a part in it either. 'Pace all the rooms with a jealous style' is talking about, what i imagine to be, the object of his affection; who could so easily slip into becoming you archetypal self-absorbed, beautiful it-girl who hasn't got a clue with 'eyes like a child'. He doesn't want what she's a part of, it's not his life.

Kate Nash – Paris Lyrics 13 years ago
This song got me through my GCSEs. Stuck the first four lines of lyrics to my bedroom mirror and hoped that somehow I'd get through all the exams and at the end of it be able to have someone say that to me.I love Kate Nash and this to me is a song that simply makes me happy :)
