Elbow – The Stops Lyrics 8 years ago
I don't think this is necessarily about a breakup. I think he's giving up drinking for a a girl, perhaps a daughter? I'm not 100% sure.

absolutely brilliant ideas that you're laying down here. I would say it's god, but another song of his hints towards leaving faith in God behind when he grew older. The song is called Crinan Wood, it's just as haunting as this song here.

Just throwing this out there, perhaps it's telling a story?

I'm thinking a man who is deeply in love with his newborn child but has so much on his mind and hates the world we live in today, so he kills his child to keep it from experiencing the awful terrors of modern society. Obviously there are a lot of holes in that, but I'm just thinking on a keyboard.

I always thought the "While we keep on living like monkeys" was "Are there really people living like monkeys?" when I listened to it. Then again, I never listened very carefully.

Iron & Wine – Friends They Are Jewels Lyrics 13 years ago
The song is played very slow, helping give feeling to the lyrics showing that life is much more beautiful when we open our minds (lay your pistol down) and that life is short (granny).

Beam also shows the detrimental effects too much caring can have, as if someone had spent so much time polishing stones but forgot to enjoy the breeze, or when spending lots of time growing plants that are just to be eaten by mice. (Perfect polished stones but this breeze beats you both, The mice in the yard ate the potted plants you grew)

As for "The Duty of men never fell to you", I'm not sure but it just might be an accompanying line saying "you've had it easy so far, so why are you even raising your pistol?" in the most lyrically relevant terms possible.

Basically, we should open our minds and enjoy the true beauty in life while we still can, because in the short time we have, there's not much else to do.

That's just my interpretation.
I also believe that this is one of my top three Iron & Wine songs ever. It's so beautifully and craftily written.

Iron & Wine – Carried Home Lyrics 13 years ago
The ending of the song almost gives a dream-like effect, making me wonder if perhaps the song is delving into their own subconscious, thinking of all of these images are reminding them of something they love and hate at the same time?

Iron & Wine – Dearest Forsaken Lyrics 13 years ago
Before I read these comments, I was always getting the impression of a Man who lost his wife through indirect harm that he caused, and goes through stages of grief. In this he contemplates suicide (Here on the eve of too long) is an alcoholic (Empty, the bottle drains no more) and later gives his life to Christ. Samuel Beam has always had that tinge of "God" in his songs, though he himself battles with belief (or rather putting faith/trust) in God. It shows very clearly in his songs, and adds an emotional push into his songs. If he weren't going through those kinds of struggles, I don't think his music would be as haunting or beautiful as it is now.

Yes, there are holes in my story of this song, Such as "Strength of the stump I tied you boy".

"afraid of your angry hands no more" is a tough one, but I think it might be referring to God's 'angry hands', perhaps taking his wife away? Somehow he blames God for his loss?

But look at me, I'm rambling about my interpretation, which is probably wrong, about an amazingly written song that I will never stop listening to, as well as every other I&W song.

Enjoy the music, that's what it's there for, right?
