Nine Inch Nails – And All That Could Have Been Lyrics 10 years ago
One of the most beautiful, powerful, heartbreaking songs. I have a really personal connection to it (as I think many of us do).

The lyrics convey pure hopelessness and a desire to escape. The speaker is slipping away from reality, retreating into himself and his depression. Although someone has tried to reach out to him and offer help, he pushed them away. He is securely "locked in his head" and filled with regret. "All that could have been..."

The current of self-loathing that runs through this song feels all too familiar and it's devastating. Part of the reason that the speaker rejects being "rescued" is because he doesn't even believe that he deserves to be. He wants to be miserable, because misery is what he feels he deserves. "Maybe I'll disappear" isn't a fear, it's a sick hope. "Maybe [if I'm lucky]..."

Of course, self-loathing causes a person to isolate themselves and self-destruct even more, which breeds more self-loathing...

It's a vicious circle that this song perfectly, painfully captures. When you truly believe the words, "I am tainted, happiness and peace of mind were never meant for me," it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Depression is a toxic, debilitating monster. And it really does just leave you sadly wondering what you missed out on, "what could have been".

I agree with the good sir (lady?) who replied before me. Well said.

IMO the way people interpret songs is more a reflection of who they are than what the songs are actually about. I don't believe in concrete meanings when it comes to lyrics. Obviously artists have specific intentions when they write, but music is subjective and always open to interpretation. A song's meaning is whatever meaning you the listener give it.

Wide Awake's lyrics leave lots of room for interpretation, on purpose I'm sure. As a pop song, it was created to appeal to the masses. It has lyrics that listeners from all different backgrounds can relate to their own life experiences. That being said, if you want to argue that it's about recovering from a heroin addiction, I really can't tell you that you're wrong. The argument is definitely there ("crashing from the high", "cloud 9", yadda yadda) and it's your place to believe whatever you want.

But when this song was first written, I highly doubt the lyricists explicitly intended for it to be about heroin or drugs. I think you're only seeing the song at face value. It contains drug allusions, yes, but those allusions are a way of conveying something else. Like the other replier stated, you can draw a number of parallels between drug addiction and things like love and relationships, and musicians do it all time (Ke$ha's Your Love Is My Drug is probably not the best example but it's the first to come to mind). Just because there are allusions to drugs does not mean that the song is ABOUT drugs. Songs are full of metaphor, symbolism, and all that artsy crap. IMHO, that's the case here, bro. :)

I can listen to this over and over and never get sick of it. It's such a beautiful, melancholy little love song. I find it really romantic, in a weird way. Despite the fact that he's drunk, at a whorehouse, getting his ass kicked while fighting for a girl's honor, there's a strange sense of innocent sweetness to it...

I mean:

"She must be plum crazy
I kinda think I like her
I kinda think I do"

Awww. Man, that part gets me EVERY time.

Lissie – When I'm Alone Lyrics 13 years ago
There need to be more comments on this song. Seriously.
I love the way the music picks up at the chorus... the sound of the chorus is really different from the sound of the verses, and I dig that.
And I love this girl's voice, it's got so much soul.
As for the meaning, I think the song is basically about someone who the singer loves to spend time with - someone who makes her feel alive, comfortable, happy, etc. However, that person doesn't feel as strongly about her as she feels about them, and they are rarely there as much as she wants them to be. So, she finds herself waiting and wishing for them to be with her, wondering why they always seem to run off so quickly when she so desperately wants them to stay.
