I agree, temp. This song is proof that by 1967 the Beatles (Paul, in particular) had MASTERED the art form of the three minute pop song to such a degree that there was nothing more to do with the genre. They had to grow artistically, which led to so much more. I place it with Eleanor Rigby and Penny Lane as being among the most perfect pop songs ever written. |

I think the medley is a history of the Beatles . . . maybe not in completely chronological order, but it's all there . . . from their early years struggling and having money trouble but loving their music, finding some success (one sweet dream), going to Germany (ten-mark note up the nose), becoming the Fab Four in Mod London (polythene pam), going to India to visit the Sun King and meditate, Linda coming in through the bathroom window with her silver spoon, life getting crazier and crazier, then Brian Epstein dies and Paul has to take over running the band's business as well as being the studio taskmaster (carry that weight) until it's over . . . and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. |

I have always thought that was the saddest line in music. The first time I heard it I stopped the car and wrote it down so I would remember it.
We all had dreams when we were young about what we would be and who we would become -- we caught fleeting glimpses out of the corners of our eyes. But now they're gone and we've become comfortably numb.
And I cry heavy and loud sobs too, Zen. |

There was a movie in the 80's called "Breaking Glass" about a singer who rises in the punk era as a rebel against the system, and by the end of the movie she has been so co-opted into the system that she has to be shot up to go on stage and make money for the "Man." Shocking ending. |

Jarak, I joined this site so I could tell you how profound your interpretation is. I hope someday you come back to this thread and see what your words have meant. I knew, of course, that the song was about Roger's missing Syd, and I really liked the instrumental introduction. Dave was amazing playing it at Live8. But it never dawned on me that I was the "you" the song was referring to. Now it makes so much sense. |
