Modest Mouse – Parting of the Sensory Lyrics 11 years ago
I think it essentially boils down to the concept that, to put it bluntly, life is meaningless.

"Through all the stubborn beauty I start at the dawn
Until the sun had fully stopped
Just a way to pull apart
Dehydrate back into minerals
A life-long walk to the same exact spot" - Obviously a metaphor for life. You go through a whole life, and the end result is...nothing. There's nothing at the end. Just you decomposing.

Another example: "We placed our chips in all the right spots
But still lost" - is it not obvious enough yet? We lived the best life humanly possible- end result...still nothing.

"Someday you will die, and
Somehow something's going to steal your carbon" - this whole tangent is the same thing, just less metaphorical. He repeats it over and over again, in different ways, essentially trying to drum his point into your head. You will die and decompose to nothing. That is it.

And there's no surprise here. Anyone who's familiar enough with Modest Mouse to know this song should probably know by now that this is actually their worldview. It's certainly no secret.

Cloud Nothings – No Future/No Past Lyrics 12 years ago
FTR, it's "come to know", not "come to / no". Anyway, that aside, these lyrics seem utterly basic and without meaning when you read them, but when you actually listen to them and think about them, they're heart-wrenching. It's amazing how such simple lyrics can convey so much emotion and meaning.

Yuck – Get Away Lyrics 12 years ago
Horribly lame, but I interpret this song as having a girl/guy you can't get off your mind. That's the situation I'm in right now and it kinda speaks to me.

Avenged Sevenfold – Critical Acclaim Lyrics 12 years ago
A7X is self-admittedly pro-Republican band (though they're simply not politics-focused). I definitely read these lyrics as a criticism of the antiwar/anti-Bush movements that were absolutely raging when this song came out. In fact, it's more than a criticism, it's a bloodthirsty, vicious attack. And it's specifically focused at the antiwar/anti-Bush crowd. I don't know how anyone can take anything else from this song.

Agree with the below posters: it's clearly a sarcastic criticism of religion in general.

Mute Math – Clipping Lyrics 12 years ago
Audio "clipping" put simply: when the audio signal sent to the speaker exceeds the speaker's voltage capabilities. It gets "overloaded". The result is audio distortion.

It's a very intelligent metaphor for a song title, I think, and the comparison is clear when you look at the lyrics: "Feeling overload ... drowning all along ... wearing out ... I give up ... common sense failed again ... Time won't spare another sun, daring me with another choice ... I don't know who to fight anymore, I don't know what is right anymore..."

It's a picture of someone who's completely overwhelmed by life and feels like they're "drowning," they always make all the wrong choices and they feel like they can't go on. They feel like they "just don't know (about anything) anymore."

It's not really a deep meaning to the song, but the music is just beyond amazing.

The Dismemberment Plan – 8.5 Minutes Lyrics 13 years ago
Awesome song and good job interpreting it. I love the lines:
"But the sky is like a dome of black metal flake
And stars bleed together in phosphorescent lakes
And a dead black disk slides silently overhead
It's fucking beautiful is what it is."
No sun means no moonlight, plus no electricity on earth, the sky would look like black metal flake (which is what makes paint metallic or "sparkly", a good example is this-- http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_i_AovfzNXgQ/SI_1lbqjB7I/AAAAAAAAUs8/0A773-96ewI/s400/IMG_6445.jpg). The stars would be so numerous, they would just blend together in lakes of light. And the "dead black disk" being the only other thing in the sky: the unilluminated moon, only appearing as a black disc in the sky. It really would be beautiful if you picture it. Great imagery in this song.

The Dismemberment Plan – The Face of the Earth Lyrics 14 years ago
Sadly, the metaphor of this song is somewhat lost on me. Every time I read or hear the lyrics, I can't help but visualize the scenes from "The Forgotten", when the people are sent flying into the sky so fast that they just turn into little dots, and then nothing. The lyrics match those scenes pretty well, actually.

Still, the bizarre situation of someone being blown from the face of the earth it an amazing metaphor for the song's meaning. Really. I can somewhat relate, knowing someone for a few hours, kind of hitting it off but really not knowing them well at all, only for them to die in an accident. It's kind of surreal, but you're not sad. Should you be? You didn't know how they lived their life, their family, their friends. The way this song conveys the metaphor is pretty fucking amazing. Interpretations aside, listening to this song just sends chills down my spine. I don't know what it is, but it definitely has a certain vibe to it that strikes me. Such an amazing song.
