Slowdive – Souvlaki Space Station Lyrics

So per the band in a recent documentary, this song is Rachel's breakup song towards Neil. Neil's breakup songs to her were 40 Days and Dagger. So much drama! Such good music. |

Frightened Rabbit – Nitrous Gas Lyrics

Love this song. Nitrous gas is laughing gas, so since the dude isn't happy, he'll just breathe in some laughing gas instead and that'll be the closest thing he has to happiness. |

Headphones – I Never Wanted You Lyrics

Seems to me like a couple was married ("and then we lit one wick") but now they are separating. On the surface, it looks like the guy is the one doing the breaking or at least is the reason for it, like he never wanted to be in the relationship. I thought that's what it was about for a while, but the bridge bit never made much sense (the parts about being inflammatory, naive). Then it occurred to me that the guy is actually the one that got hurt. In order to appear like he wasn't, he seeks to convince her that he never wanted her. It isn't like him to be inflammatory, but he'd rather appear to be a prick than a naive weakling. His only defense against his crushing heartbreak is to put up these walls, though they're completely artificial.
The fact that this song can have such a dual-meaning is awe-inspiring. The emotion in this song (especially the live versions) easily makes this one of Bazan's best (if not THE best). It showcases his brilliant ability to tell a story. So beautiful. |

Thee More Shallows – Monkey vs. Shark Lyrics

To me, it seems like there is a person who struggles with identity, and maintaining their individuality. The guy isn't even distinctive enough to have his folder at the state differ from some other random guy who shares his name.
He recalls, however, a time when he did have an identity - his childhood (he was the monkey, his buddy was the shark). Kind of makes me feel nostalgic for a simpler time with creativity and imagination, and where kids could be themselves. The guy sort of lost all of that when he grew up. |

Menomena – Tithe Lyrics

From what I've read of the members of Menomena, they were raised Christians. This song clearly has a lot of religious themes...prayer, tithe, etc. Maybe they lost their faith along the way? Or have become distant from it? |
