You Won't – Who Knew Lyrics

This song always makes me smile :) The protagonist takes the flimsy reason for his rejection ("you tell me my timings no good") on the chin. I like to think he kind of shrugs his shoulders, says "Shooters gonna shoot", and walks away |

Zoey Van Goey – The Best Treasure Stays Buried Lyrics
| 9 years ago
|
The song is about 2 lovers that have committed a crime that has left them in possession of some kind of valuable loot. They go to a cabin and hide the loot in a chest and put the chest under a trapdoor. They then promise each other that they'll return for the treasure once the heat from the crime they've committed has blown over. The girl tells her lover that they'll be fine as long as they don't turn on each other and turn themselves in.
Beautiful song with uncomplicated but emotive lyrics. For me the line "Time to disappear" evokes the feelings of excitement and anxiety that the couple is feeling. Also very cool vocals :) |

@[sevenslimysnails:1147] Fantastic comment. Enjoyed the first person view run-through of the song. A couple of nice insights that made one or two of the more vague references clear to me. Thanks for sharing |

The All-American Rejects – Gives You Hell Lyrics
| 9 years ago
|
Haha such a fun song. Meaning is pretty clear from what the band says below :)
The first single from The All-American Rejects third album, frontman Tyson Ritter said in a track-by-track interview before the album was released that the song was about a single person, but he later explained to MTV News: "It's kind of this tongue-in-cheek way of looking at someone you hate, whether it's your mom, for some reason, or it's your teacher at school, or it's your boss at work. It's just someone who makes you struggle, and it's giving them the finger." (http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=13467)
Ritter explained the song's promo to MTV News: "The video basically pits one neighbor against another terrible neighbor, who lives on a completely opposite schedule. He's not on the grid - he's not on, like the song says, 'a 9-to-5 pace.' And this guy's living the cookie-cutter life, with his white picket fence, and his wife who brings him lemonade when he's washing the car. So it's kind of like the clash of those worlds; only at the end, there's kind of a twist, where the two worlds kind of flip-flop." (http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=13467) |

Jack Johnson – Gone Lyrics
|
Typical Jack Johnson lyrics :) Beauty in simplicity. He sings about meaningful aspects of life.. and without being overly abstract he makes some really insightful commentary on the way a lot of people spend their time.
Cars and phones and diamond rings, bling bling
Those are only removable things
What about your mind, does it shine?
Or are there things that concern you more than your time?
Ah just so great :) He's asking a person that is focused on material gains whether those things are truly worth the time they sacrificed to get them. The time you have is shorter than you think.. we're geared to over-estimate the time we have available to do the things we want to do. Which is a good thing.. because it makes us more hopeful of the future than might be prudent. But sometimes it's good to be reminded that your time is valuable.. more valuable than the "removable things"
Chase experiences :) not material things. The joy of owning something reduces over time as you get used to the new baseline of owning it. In contrast, the revisiting of a memory of an amazing experience does not reduce the enjoyment you get from it. As time goes on.. the value that you place on that happy memory, as you look back on your life, is likely to increase |

Bon Iver – Towers Lyrics

Fantastic interpretation :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Just a thought on the "fuck the fiercest fables, I'm with Hagen" line.. I think he's referring to the US senator Kay Hagan. There was a smear campaign against her that was based on her attending a convention of the Godless Americans PAC. Anyway Hagan is not actually an atheist, but I think Vernon was playing on the religious aspects u referred to in your interpretation. Thanks again for the effort :) |

Vampire Weekend – Step Lyrics

I really enjoyed your second last paragraph. I think that is the principle difference between a hipster and a person that is at ease with himself and his taste in music. If the fact that the music you listen to has gone ‘main strain’ detracts from your enjoyment thereof.. you're listening to it for the wrong reasons |

The Shins – Fall of '82 Lyrics

MAGNET Web Exclusive: The Shins’ James Mercer On The New “Port Of Morrow”
“Fall Of ’82″
“When I was 11, we moved from Germany to New Mexico, resulting in long period of anxiety and stress that triggered some change in my brain chemistry. I became forlorn and morose for six months. I was pulled out of this funk by my oldest sister who had moved back in with the family. She was about 22; she had moved to Kansas and had some affair with a local yokel and that fell apart, so she moved back. She had been kind of a hood back in high school. I remember looking at pictures of here from back then, and there was this kind of a cute girl wearing a denim jacket with shit written on it. But she didn’t get into the drugs like my older brother did. So she was just this combo of motherly and cool, and it was the perfect presence to be around. And she knew the weirdness of adolescence it was still fresh in her mind. I am eternally grateful.”

Brett Dennen – Just Like The Moon Lyrics

I agree with the guy girl relationship.. I like how Dennen says:
sometimes I only get a sliver of ya
but I'm hoping
I'm hoping for a full moon tonight.
the guy is only getting a small part of the girl he loves.. but he's hopeful that she will show him more each coming day :) simple and beautiful |

Iron & Wine – Half Moon Lyrics

Love this about Beam's music.. the melody sounds so happy and playful.. but when u listen to the lyrics.. u get a tragic story of a man crying out in dismay as his companion is dying and he can do nothing for her.. the hopelessness of the story is heart wrenching. Beam writes so easily, beautifully and simply about emotions and situations that are incredibly difficult to describe :) what a champion |

Eels – Going to Your Funeral Part I Lyrics
| 12 years ago
|
beautiful song.. it describes the feelings of losing someone close unexpectedly and then goin 2 their funeral perfectly
look at all the people with their heads down in their hands
when everything I'm feeling makes it hard to understand
that,
what I need to miss...
It's what I need to miss...
is you
it's unreal how accurate this is.. you have so many friends and family at the funeral.. you struggle to comprehend what you have lost.. ur in shock and you're not yet capable of grieving
One can see that E is singing from experience.. one would expect to instantly grieve and miss the person you have lost.. but that's not how it happens. The grieving comes later.. at the funeral ur just trying to cope and figure out how its possible for everything to change in the blink of an eye |
