Dream Theater – Beneath The Surface Lyrics 12 years ago
Wow... Just wow... I always think that Petrucci has a huge knack for lyrics, but he has really outdone himself this time. I finally got the album today, and I listened to it straight one track at a time, looking for the track that would really grab me. It was this one. Hands down. Have been listening to it on repeat ever since. First one that I learned too. Just wow... Such meaningful lyrics. Yup, I teared up too.

Porcupine Tree – The Sound Of Muzak Lyrics 14 years ago
Personally, I really think this song was meant to be left open to interpretation along with having multiple meanings. Some people are trying to fight for it filling with the killer theme or for be a standalone contrast, but why can't it be both? I wouldn't put it past SW by any means to put that much double, even triple, layered meaning into his song.
It could be about the main character having a passion for music, and being extremely distraught over what the industry is doing, SW trying to get the listener to realize how non-unusual psychopathology could be. You may never meet somebody that is that messed up. He could be your brother.
But also, I think he really is taking a jab at the music industry. I think he purposely wrote the lyrics to mean both of those things. Soul getting squeezed out can refer to both how the industry is essentially raping good music, and to how the character might be feeling is happening to his life in part due to the funeral etc.
I just think it is SW's genius to be able to write a song with separate and powerful, yet universal lyrics, in the same song. Again, brilliant song, it's just so great in the way it sounds, and so true in what it means.
