I always interpreted this song about loneliness, perhaps because I was a teen at the time it came out and the lyrics hit a nerve. The narrator has just had a dream that he was in a loving and meaningful relationship with a girl, then wakes up and realizes that none of it is real.
In his dream he can sense that it isn't real ("Why are you so far away?" she said. "Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you?" and "You're just like a dream...").
He awakens and, in despair, is reminded of how alone he is: ("I opened up my eyes And found myself alone
Alone Alone above a raging sea That stole the only girl I loved And drowned her deep inside of me").
Though after reading the comments about what happened to Robert Smith's real-life girlfriend, that does put the song into a whole new light for me. |
