these lyrics speak volumes to me personally. walking day to day, preparing a face to meet the faces that you meet, living idealistically to a fault; at any moment things can fall apart and your true self can spring up. and you might not like what you find.

The music video for this is probably my all time favorite, definitely top 10 music videos imo. The music as a whole is genius itself: if you havnt listened to Forever Dolphin Love go do it! Conan Mockasin is on another level.

I love how the train track sample at the beginning correlates with the general beat/sample...the bass hits right as the train track makes a lower sound, and the other train clicks seem to correlate with the tambourine and woodknocks. that always caught my ear, and i think its a great methodology to use.

Animal Collective – Alvin Row Lyrics 9 years ago
Did You See The Words and Cuckoo Cuckoo seem to have similar themes, but we all could be reading into it too much, especially given that this is years before Avey and had a wife (i think...). I wish I knew if they had a miscarriage experience, as that would be telling. Even if they didnt there are definite themes of loss and growing all throughout their works up through the feels/sungtongs era.

Animal Collective – Cuckoo Cuckoo Lyrics 9 years ago
After reading the comments from Have You Seen The Words?, I'm convinced this is about severe loss, and it all seems to add up to a miscarriage or death of a baby. If someone could confirm that Avey and his wife did indeed have such tragedy, I think it would confirm my thoughts. But that's sensitive information, so idk how I feel about prying into their private lives. Anywho, to start, "how I lost my boy" seems to show he lost his son. The next verse, "The King in I died, he kept floating past my eyes, singing his songs, life was good but death's all wrong" is the father lamenting how he was preparing mentally to take on fatherhood, but suddenly was stripped of his good song singing life by "death's all wrong". \

Next verse, "cant feel a thing, no heart flutters in late spring, you just drift and pray for sun-kissed golden days" shows us a numbed man starting to lose his libido, even in spring when everyone is doing it. All he and his wife can do is pray for better days, despite their drift.

And these lines are most convincing to me: "I can't hold what's in my hand
Don't do any good to say this isn't what I planned." He never planned for a miscarriage, and he seems to be breaking down, unable to carry the weight that burdens him.
"Little kids sliding down the steel park slide
And little kids can't play with things that have died
Sometimes all I want is is one favorite song.
Two to three minutes doesn't seem that long."
If only he had one moment with his child, he could have played with him, sung a song for him. And here I think the child is crying out:
"Where's my mom I want to hold her tight.
She's so far away from crowded nights.
I'm going cuckoo cuckoo.
We're all going cuckoo cuckoo."
And the couple is deteriorating into craziness. Again, from the unborn's perspective "I said please stay
You can see me, don't go away
I can't see the landscape
Please describe its amaranthine haze"
The Father responds,
"It's odd where I am
They're people you're not like them
They just look away for rain-quenched golden days"
The dad is uncomfortable with the people around him trying to shrug the reality of what happened off into golden days, when really they are always surrounded by suffering.
"And my tears quench five feet along" -father mourning
"And I can scream but cannot yawn" -refers to both baby screaming but unable to yawn and sleep in life, and possibly also to the father's extreme frustration and inability to sleep.
"And people gonna come and people gonna cry
We just hope it's worth the age we die" -funeral and contemplating the age of death.
"Don't try to erase what you have done
Put your fingers in a mouth and kiss it if it wants" -not sure about these lines, seems to refer to denial of the tragedy and the deep desire for a child.
"And where's my friend, I want to hold him tight
he's so far away from mountain light" -father just wants his son to experience the world.

I've listened to this track for years, and never understood what was going on. But in light of all this, it is all the more moving. Granted, this is all theory, and could be completely off the mark. I have not looked too much into other songs around this time, but Did You See The Words? seems to correlate with this overall theory. It'd be nice to know if any other songs refer to this tragic loss.

Panda Bear – Comfy in Nautica Lyrics 10 years ago
i think the nauttica part refers to nautical drifting...not sure how that fits into your interpretation but i think he takes comfort in letting go, as the taoists say, wu wei: take comfort in the nautical life of leaving attachments behind and exploring new horizons. dont fight the flow, meander with it. though i could be totally off.

Portishead – Deep Water Lyrics 10 years ago
i like both this interpretation and the psychedelic one...either way the metaphor of deep water as a kind of belly of the beast/collective unconsciousness holds true: in a trip, if you give in to fear then ego-death, or any sort of enlightened state, is impossible to attain. In life, if you give in to fear/ignorance and rationalize a way to reject altruism and hold onto your ego, you will end up a selfish mess akin to hellish ways. The kingdom of heaven is here and now, we just have to let go of our attachments and fears and then things will become somewhat clear (we cant get the full picture, we are all just like fingers pointing to the moon that is the whole of reality; as humans, we cannot grasp the ultimate metaphor that we commonly associate with the divine). In the same way, the Buddha promotes enlightenment in the intimate, in-between moments of the present movements of life and death. And so, try not to struggle this time, for you will weather the storm. If anyone wants to learn the uke tabs message me! i learned my own version of it, idk if its accurate or not though. :)

The music video for this song is reminiscent of an old child's game i cant remember the name of. You would make a circle and whisper some random thing once and then the next person would have to whisper the same thing, and so on. In the end, it was always something completely different. This whole album demands some respect, yo. All in all, this dude is a creative mastermind.

of Montreal – Our Love Is Senile Lyrics 10 years ago
Our love is senile
Like a blind child bumping into walls
Say it's not guilt keeping us together
How can we support each others' wills?
Our love is senile
Like we don't recognize each other
Somehow we relapsed to being strangers
We're scaling black tiles in our sacred realm

best lyrics ever for someone who has been left broken and confused.

Animal Collective – Rosie Oh Lyrics 10 years ago
hey i dont mean to be too much of a critique, but in rosie oh, he refuses a ride in the glades and then later refuses homely comforts: "said 'no, id rather not', said 'no, id rather not step in'" this kinda changes alot of things according to your interpretation. but no matter, i like your general lines on thought, id just pay more attention to the lyrics so you dont end up misquoting something into what it isnt. cheers!

bmos happy song has quickly become my own. <3 the sun inspired silver lining...even with the darkest of clouds the sun still persists in lighting up and inspiring us to better ourselves. im obsessed with plato's therepublic, so the sun metaphor always makes me smile. may we all see the quality of everything in light of Beauty, Truth, and Goodness! peer into the divine madness, and you might go blind; acclimate yourself with brief glimpses of the sun's outline, and eventually the light will become warm instead of blinding. fears will dissolve as ignorance dissolves, and viceversa. peace, my friends.

Panda Bear – The Preakness Lyrics 12 years ago
Ok i know i might have said something earlier in a post about deakin's track being my favorite, but after many many listens this piece by panda bear is just breath-taking. its lyrically complicated but not too complicated..idk i cant really explain his genius but his use of piano/synths towards the end just gives me pandachills all over.

"See your hopes become my hopes"
aaahh so good the way he can make a seemingly simple sentence and complicate it up with his vocals.

and btw, I hear:
"we'll all get there some day"
instead of what is posted, what think you?

Panda Bear – On the Farm Lyrics 13 years ago
AAAH seriously just looking at the development of panda bear's music since he was a young lad making inspiring music like this to his brilliant work on Tom Boy and with Animal Collective is quite interesting. In his early days, he uses a mix of choir-boy vocals and experimental guitars/effects to churn out gripping masterpieces that just get better and better the more one hears it; and this song in particular represents this trend quite well: his mysterious screaming vocals on top of some rather uniquely tuned wacky guitar chords just make me smile every listen. other tracks such as O Please Bring Her Back also illustrate some pretty epic acoustic guitar use along with some very emotional and inspiring lyrics. lyrics aside, the way he sings is extremely emotive: he sings the words as if its the last time he'll be able to, and does so almost hesitantly, and so it thus comes off in a weird subtly soft and boyish tone. i just love his pre-sampling days.

Deakin – Country Report Lyrics 13 years ago
Little did I know of Deakin's true talents...i look forward to hearing more of his stuff (be it with AC or not).

I particularly like the line "Is it really a change if you're not sure?"..it seems to prove that change is the only thing left unchanged, since being not sure of something is a capricious/whimsical mood that is often susceptible to change itself. thats probably not what Deakin meant at all, but the last lines (which were really the only ones i could make out on the first listen) just made me think of impermanence. song seems to be about some relationship or something...i really do not know. but anywho, my ears are happy.

Animal Collective – Screens Lyrics 13 years ago
agreed. the end has two overlapping vocals, not exactly sure what it is, but sounds like "my abilities to deal with things that scream 'be careful'. Now that I'm listening to it, these lyrics seems all wrong:

"If I could take my eyes away, might not get so dry now.
If I could keep my hands away, might not get so dried out.
And when I would feel I'd know that it is real.
I'd like to stay with natural things, organic as my skin that peels.
And not so often enter in outer-space that I can never touch.
Back-lit and bite, fields in a mine, to turn it off, and to make sure
I keep it real with myself and never let obsessions with connections to an outside source
be crippling my abilities to breathe and take a step out from my usual places.
Just to make sure I keep it real with my own and never let a tendency to tread in water with no target
cripple my abilities to deal with things that scream 'be careful' Seeing screens with me behind it
No one's between what I should and why am I seeing how to do it?
(why am I seeing screens? why am I seeing screens? why am I seeing screens? why am I seeing screens?)
I feel frail whenever I'm lost in so many screens that I am seeing.
Screens appear behind my eyes.
But I feel frail whenever I'm lost in so many screens that I am seeing.
Screens appear behind my eyes.
But I feel frail whenever I'm lost in so many screens that I am seeing.
Screens appear behind my eyes.

Why am I seeing screens ? Why am I before screens?
Why am I seeing screens ? Why am I before screens?
Why am I seeing screens ? Why am I before screens?"

Yea i think i'm right, took a good bit of listening to figure it out so could be off, please correct where needed!!

Brian Wilson – Child Is Father Of The Man Lyrics 14 years ago
The Rainbow, by Wordsworth:

My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.

I like your thoughts and the one below (considering its brian's own words). but the Child is the Father of the Man is a reference to Wordsworth:

My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.

Radiohead – Idioteque Lyrics 14 years ago
Yea i dont see how people can misunderstand his lyrics:

who's in a bunker? women and children first.
mobile's chirping, take the money and run.
we're not scare mongering. this is really happening

that just gives me chills: it reflects our fleeting anthropocentric tendencies that destroys our biotic community (and thus ourselves). he is ironic and yet totally serious when he tells you to take the money and run: the world is ending god damnit take everything you can get the women and children in the bunker and run.

Here I'm allowed everything all of the time...I laugh until my head falls off.

reminds me of a boiling, smiling frog that just gets happier as the fire underneath warms him until its too late and he's already been boiled to death there still and frozen with his smile. Even when the first bubbles appear, the frog is just too happy and warm to take notice or care until it smiles its head off.
