The National – Looking for Astronauts Lyrics 14 years ago
listening to this song i started to wonder why we are out looking for astronauts. perhaps we're looking for astronauts because they can take us higher, they can take us outside of this world which no longer makes sense. It makes me think of Plato's cave allegory, where we don't get to see reality but an altered version of it. Only the philosopher can break the chains and show us the reality. In this case the astronaut is the philosopher, we're out looking for someone to make sense of it all. But "it's a little too late" because we're already used to the way we see everything.
"you know you have a permanent piece of my medium-sized american heart"
if we follow through with this interpretation then this is a break into reality, it's simple and humble but true.
"are we gone, come on yeah we know we're gone"
this ties back to the fact that "it's a little too late". "we're gone", blinded by materialism and outside pressures. Hence, "take all your reasons take them away" since these reasons become invalid, they're not real, neither is that "record collection". "never makes sense", yet, "that's how we like it, and that's all we want". we don't want to change yet "we're out looking for astronauts", the never-ending search for something better yet what we have is better because it is what we know, it doesn't matter if it's right or wrong, whether it's a perception or not it feels real enough, knowing that "you have a permanent piece of my medium-sized american heart", in a way, is enough.
it's a very big leap, i doubt that this is what the song is actually about, but i think it was a theory worth exploring.
