Gilbert O'Sullivan – Clair Lyrics 4 years ago
By the way, the correct lyric is, "I want to marry you; will you marry me, Uncle Ray?"

The singer's real name is Raymond O'Sullivan (he changed it as a play on the famous duo "Gilbert & Sullivan") and Clair used to call him Uncle Ray when he babysat.

my favorite line: "She was willing and that's all there is to say"

Next time you cheat on your wife or girlfriend just say that. End of discussion!

Cher – Apples Don't Fall from the Tree Lyrics 4 years ago
A woman recounts her childhood growing up as a young girl in Ruby's Place (a brothel her mom worked in). The men would make suggestive remarks alluding to her potential to grow up and be a whore too like her mother ("Apples don't fall far from the tree"). It is kinda predatory when they say to a child in a sexual way "Hey hunny, come sit on me knee". It broke her mother's heart to see them sexualize her daughter like that, knowing that she too was setting a bad example.

Second verse as a blossoming teenager is how men would compliment her and lavish her with gifts, but all they really wanted was sex in return.

Finally, after her mother dies the singer decides to escape her past and reinvent her life. She meets and marries a good man. Her husband and father of her little daughter doesn't know about her growing up around pervy men in a brothel. He is paying a genuine compliment when he says "Apples don't fall far from the tree" and is affectionately saying to his young daugther, "Hey hunny, come sit on my knee."

Cher – The Way of Love Lyrics 4 years ago
People get confused when Cher (a woman) sings giving advice about losing a male lover and then says, "What will you do when he sets you free? Just the way that you, said goodbye to me."

One interpretation is that she is singing to a lesbian lover who is leaving her for a man. However that is unlikely because that would mean Cher is singing about losing a man too, so are they really lesbians?

Second is that she is singing this to a man she loved who has come out of the closet and leaving her for another man. He is the man she met ("when you meet a boy") who is leaving and breaking her heart and warning him that his new male lover may do the same thing to him. This is plausible and fun to think, but not sure if this song aimed at adult Big Band style, was that progressive back in the early 1970's.

More than likely share is giving general advice to any woman (or gay man) about falling in love and getting dumped. That questionable last line is an aside, where she turns and directs her thoughts directly TO that lover who jilted her. It shifts from general to personal second person.

@[BekkaZ:34009]: Please STOP giving wrong info. I know this song inside and out. Seth Amos is not the brother. The brother and sister are not named! It's pretty obvious (I thought). You're the first person I've heard make this mistake.

Vicki Lawrence – The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia Lyrics 4 years ago
@[BekkaZ:34008]: Sorry, but WRONG! Whoever wrote the lyrics messed up on two of them. Is "slippin" not "skippin" thru the backwoods. And it is "said, 'I'm your best friend..." (as in short for "he said") not "Seth, I'm your best friend". Seth Amos is the boy she cheated with (in addition to Andy). Got it?

@[spiceoflife:34007] No, Seth is another guys she was cheating with. We don't know the name of the protagonist, the narrator's brother.

Firefall – Strange Way Lyrics 10 years ago
Basically, a song about a woman who is always a "downer". While one should be able to rely on their significant other for comfort and support in difficult times and be able to come to them with their problems, a relationship where one is always in need or in despair can be a downer and drain the life out of it. It's best not to get into a relationship when (or just because) you are miserable.

Foreigner – Head Games Lyrics 11 years ago
You're reading something into it that is not there. I've heard both the terms "head games" and "mind games" to mean the same thing.

If anything, the Head Games album cover shows a young woman crouched beside a toilet in a public restroom, so the light-hearted meaning may be "head" as a slang for toilet.

Gilbert O'Sullivan – Clair Lyrics 11 years ago
This was written for his manager's daughter who he used to babysit, as a gift to his parents, and hit it big in many nation, including the U.S. and U.K. There is a video of him playing with Clair at the time with the song playing on YouTube (sort of a makeshift music video from 1973).

Some of the lyrics were questionable with regard to a grown man being so in love with a little girl he was unrelated to. "In spite of our age difference", "each time I leave you I feel I could die", "to me you're more than a child". But it is, in the end, an innocuous tribute to a little girl who he is still friends with today (in her forties).

Your comment made me smile and laugh a bit. Isn't it great when you like a song's melody then finally listen to the lyrics and they give the song even deeper meaning? Karaoke has introduced many people to lyrics of songs they never really knew.

I remember this when I was four years old and I understood it was sad, but still liked it. I could never imagine losing my parents and now I have, prematurely. And "I cried and cried all day". Still hard to accept.

Alphaville – Big In Japan Lyrics 12 years ago
It's confusing because you hear a male singing "I will wait here for my man tonight", and also "pay, and I'll sleep by your side" so it's easy to think of male prostitution. That could just be the male lead singer singing from the point of the woman in the song though.

No, he is saying his God complex is like a loaded gun so he uses the analogy. It makes sense the way it is, metaphorically.

Fall Out Boy – Sugar, We're Goin Down Lyrics 12 years ago
It IS "loaded God complex". A play on "loaded gun" and "God complex", meaning he really has a dangerously high opinion of himself and desire to take control of the situation and be the one who is desired.

After the Fire – Der Kommissar Lyrics 12 years ago
It actually IS "that her nose had told the story" in keeping with the literal translation from the Falco German version, about cocaine. All in all, it is a pretty faithful translation, reworked to rhyme and flow in English.

Falco – Der Kommissar Lyrics 12 years ago
There are many hints in the song itself that indicate it is about cocaine. The words "snow" and all the talk about living fast that it will kill you and the police officer out to get you, etc.

Simon and Garfunkel – I Am A Rock Lyrics 13 years ago
The opening lyric is such powerful imagery to me.... I can see and feel the deafening silence and isolation of the snow and being alone inside on a dismal, cloudy gray day in winter:

"A winter's day
In a deep and dark December;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow."

Cher – Half-Breed Lyrics 13 years ago
FYI: Cher is not half Cherokee. Her father is the darker one (Armenian) and her mother Georgia is quite white (although like many white people claim, supposedly has traces of Cherokee or other Native American blood). The song was written for Cher though because she could pass as a half-breed Indian squaw, especially with her exotic looks and long straight black hair.
