Josh Ritter – The Curse Lyrics 11 years ago
The man is metaphorically woken up and brought back to life by a woman when she enters his life. He falls in love with her. She is wary (hence asking if he's cursed) but he reassures her because he hopes that they can be happy (hence saying he's cured).

Eventually she awakens him enough that he begins to open up to the world again. He learns and grows from her, and they are happy together. But with time, focusing all of her attention on him takes a toll on her. She begins to deteriorate emotionally. She is wary again (and asks if he's cursed)--this time he is wary, too, seeing the effect he has on her. But he brushes it off and gives her an obscure answer.

Later, he begins to ignore her care and thinks that he is strong enough to face the world on his own. He stops appreciating her (she is "just one more rag now he's dragging behind him"). The life is sucked out of her and she becomes "dead" like he once was. Their relationship ends.

He reflects later and is haunted by what happened. He thought that she could save him--and maybe she could have--but instead, he ended up ruining her in the process. He remembers when she first asked if he was cursed and how he replied "I think that I'm cured." He remembers the doubt he felt, hence the line "Then he kissed her and hoped that she'd forget that question." The listener now knows that he never fully believed he could be cured.

I think the mummy metaphor is used because he comes in and out of lifelessness. This is a never-ending cycle for him. Regrettably, nobody can save him from it, not even a woman he loved.

I agree. To me, this is clearly what the song is about. Why down votes?

Jack's Mannequin – MFEO: Part 1: Made for Each Other/Part 2: You Can Breathe Lyrics 13 years ago
this song is about cocaine, or at least references to it for a lot of the song...

the way i interpret it, the first part of the song is talking about a trip and the positive aspects of it. and how you feel like everything is perfect while you're actually on the drug. euphoria.

then the second part is the negative aspects of being on drugs. you can breathe while you have it, you can breathe while you're on it. but he knows it won't last forever--he's answering his own question in the first part: "is it possible for the world to look this way forever?"... no, because his "air" is running out.

this shows in the end of the song when he's echoing the two parts:
"Maybe, the world can look like this forever/
You can breathe but the air is running out"

so yeah. this song is basically about the positives/negatives of cocaine, and the people he experiences all of this with.

it definitely says "to be my bane"

please don't be technology
so i can turn up your love like some cold machine
don't feed me scraps from your bed
i won't be the stray coming back just to be fed

amazing

Third Eye Blind – Wake for Young Souls Lyrics 14 years ago
i think this is pretty on-point. we can't know about all the personal stuff in the song but these are good guesses.

but anyway, even though we can't know the personal details, i still get so much out of the lyrics in this song.

"today I found my soul
I felt it die inside of me
so I turn to you
life is like that, you know"

if you take it generally, this can just mean that when you feel dead inside you turn to others. it's the only way we, as humans, can live through it... when we're broken, we need other people to help fix us and feel less alone. we're just like that. "life is like that."

"truth is natural like a wind that blows
follow the direction no matter where it goes
so it shall be the earth and the sea
let the truth blow like a hurricane through me."

this lyric is one of my favorites ever. 3eb is always so honest and straightforward, and i think they really get down to the heart of things... their lyrics, to me, often get across a message of recognizing pain and all the negative things in life but accepting it. and this particular lyric sort of sums all that up. the truth is natural; a lie is unnatural, forced, and fake. accept the truth, whether it's negative or positive. that's how you'll begin to be happy in life.

Third Eye Blind – Another Life Lyrics 14 years ago
i totally disagree with the idea that this song is about christianity. that sort of seems like a stretch. to get religion out of this song i think you need to seriously overanalyze.

this song definitely seems like it's about stephan getting over his breakup, or whatever other hard times he was facing then. but no matter the cause, he was hurt and life seemed to lose it's luster. it was like nothing would ever get better and everyone looked at him differently because of his depressed behavior. but soon "another life" came along, and with time he was willing to accept this new life. he's willing to start over when he "sees [her] again" and willing to start living again, even though he recognized that there will always be a "sweeter pain." i just interpret this as meaning that you can always start new, but you will always get hurt again. you just have to be willing to accept that and make peace with it. he has "a will to burn." maybe this means that he's willing to face pain again, or maybe it just relates to the old "i live my life like burning man" (burning man from 3eb's self-titled) concept that to live is to burn. either way it makes sense to me.
i just think this song is really uplifting even though it faces pain head-on. pain is a part of life, but life still goes on. and maybe this cycle is completely pointless, "but what's so wrong with that?"
this song is realistic and doesn't try to lie to anyone. it's a no bullshit way of viewing things and i completely agree with it. i love this song so much, it helps me when i'm down. starting life up again, even when you know that pain will be part of it, is courageous.
