Mumford & Sons – The Cave Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is about taking life and the world for granted, and using and depending on other people for your own purposes,

I think mumford and sons aren't referring it to a single person, but rather the typical human, and how we are all in life for ourselves, and we don't know what we've got until its gone...

the lyrics then make sense...

'It's empty in the valley of your heart
The sun, it rises slowly as you walk
Away from all the fears
And all the faults you've left behind'
This is about running away from your fears of messing up and the regret you have from messing up in life

'The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same
I know the shame in your defeat'
The harvest leaving no food for you to eat is a metaphor saying that you feel like you have nothing (you feel numb and worthless) and you're desperate for food (or help from someone else)
"you cannibal you meat eater' refers to the using of other people to satisfy yourself
and then the lyrics are, 'but i have seen the same, i know the shame in your defeat,' this explains that they know the feeling of being lost and clutching on to anyone you possibly can, everyone does it! it's shameful and selfish, but everyone does it!

'But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck'
this shows that we are all in it together, we have all felt that same regret, that same hatred for ourselves and the desperate cries for help from someone else, they wont let us choke, even though in the verses state that you are infact being selfish, who ever you ask will help you because we have all seen the same in ourselves, regret, hatred, but ultimatley the only reason we get up out of bed in the morning is because we have hope that something will come out of life.

'And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again'
finding strength resembles the hope that gets us out of bed in the morning
the lyrics, 'i'll know my name as it's called again' is the process of starting over, finding that hope and regenerating yourself, recognising that you are who you are and making yourself the best you possibly can..

Cause I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I'll take mine
Now let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind

So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults
And despite my growing fears

the first two lines of this verse resemble fending for ourselves, and not using other people, you take your own problems and ill take care of my own problems, because i have other things to do than help you...

then the truth i think is ultimately the truth about life, should we help others or ask for help from others at the risk of breaking down ourselves and hurting them, or should we keep to ourselves,
this lyric display the desperateness to understand what to do, how do we handle pain and defeat, by ourselves or risk guilt in relying on others

the 2nd paragraph in that verse about orphans and widows, shows the guilt someone feels for crying over their own problems, when there are people so much worse off than them in the world, and it shows that you know you are not suppose to cry, you know your call to be strong for those people suffering, despite your faults and your growing fears of loosing hope

'So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's land'
the cave resembles you hiding fro your fears and faults and regrets in life, and tells you to come out of your cave, face the world, see it hanging upsidedown, everyone else is in the same situation, the world will not stop for you...
if you depend on people to much, you will know the makers land, you will return to your maker unsatisfied with life, without achieving anything, a lyric in the song by mumford and sons - awake my soul, is 'you were made to meet your maker' which basically means that you weren't made for a purpose in the world, you were here to exist and die, not 'live' and you will come back to your maker without having achieved anything in the world.

So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say

Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be

This part is basically about not listening to someone's problems because you have your own, and you have to work on yourself before you can help others, because you need freedom now and you need to know how to live your life first.

It then finishes with the chorus about helping you eventually, but also regenerating yourself again and making your self strong, so as you are ready to help others, and not let them choke on the noose around your neck..

every single line in this song means so much, and this song basically sums up a human being (we have ups and downs and we do sometimes put ourselves first in desperate needs, but ultimately we don't want anyone else to suffer because of our selfishness)

beautiful.

It's about looking into the future and seeing your life as nothing, just death at the end, and your scared, your 'heart stumbles on things you dont know,' because its in the future...
'you were made to meet your maker' is a common saying, and it is basically suggesting that the only reason your here is because somone made you, and all that is going to happen is that you will come back to that maker when you die.
It is about looking at life as if you live and you die and no-one really cares about you, even if they do, they will al die to, so what's the point? 'in these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die.'
This sort of message comes through in lots of mumford and sons songs and the strength of each word spoke by them, really brings out the strength of the message..

truly amazing!

This song doesn't necessarily have to be about a girl,

I interpreted it as him having a go at himself,
He is in this situation where he keeps screwing up, or embarrasing himself or doing something that gets him weak again, and in doing so he hurts other people just in general
He feels like he is using people to help him, and he is draining them, and at the time he blames it on them for letting him get to a depressed state again and weeping, but then he realises that 'he has seen this all before' and so the chorus, 'not your fault but mine,' resembles his realisation that he is the reason why he is depressed, no-one else is,
if you interperate it in this way all the lyrics fit together really well, and it becomes this cycle, his cycle of using people to get what he wants (happiness) and then regretting it and hating himself for it, and then doing it again,

and really, what he knows but doesn't change, is the fact that all these problems that he cries over, aren't really problems at all, they're just stupid things that he gets all worked up over thinking that they will effect his life but they are just tiny hiccups or embarrasments and he feels selfish for crying over things that don't effect the quality of his life, he takes everything for granted.

Aside from the lyrics, the strength of each word spoke by mumford and sons, express the anger and frustration with himself so well, and in every song they are able to express their tone to the audience perfectly

Pretty awesome.

Angus and Julia Stone – Bella Lyrics 14 years ago
This song gives me chills when you here a little girl saying hello at the start,

knowing that it was about his friend who died of cancer when they were little leads you to imagine what she was like,

The innocence of the lyrics, 'Yeah the pretty bird, on the golden mile that made you feel real,' and 'In the pretty skirt with the
Golden smile that made you feel new,' really bring out the innocence of the girl that she was the words 'new' and 'real' display the effect children have on the community, they are completely care free and new , and the words 'gold' repeated show the beauty and the gold that she shared with everyone, she clearly was someone very special

this song is beautiful in every word, and it gives me shivers, Angus and Julia are extremely talented.

Mumford & Sons – Timshel Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that it is about someone who is feeling really numb and doesn't have any motivation in life,
'death is at your doorstep, and it will steal your innocence, but it will not steal your substance, you are not alone in this"
it means that you are so close to giving up, death being at your door step, and it has stolen your innocent mind, so things that you believed when you were little,
like getting married and love and all that stuff that we get told is true by our parents, it's all gone and you don't believe in it so whats the point,
they are saying that whoever this person is, they are not the only one who feels that way and they will do whatever they can to fix them, but "i won't move the mountain, for you" essentially is saying that whoever this person is, they have to cooperate in getting themselves back on track
i have always found that mumford and sons are really clever at using metaphors in their lyrics, and this line especially, gets me everytime!
