Hair shirts were scratchy woolen undergarments worn from the 13 century to about the 15th by religiously pentitant people. There were a form of self flagellation who used to believe that suffering brought you closer to God. I see a relationship in this song that is finally over. The singer is finally removing his Hair shirt, giving up on suffering in hopes of regaining his love. |

When I listen to this song I see my summers during high school. Girl on the swing with the dirty ankles is striking. Say what you will and they still adore ya, those are friends you made before you grew into an adult with adult ideas. Its just one of the greatest songs ever written and s few people have heard it. |

I have loved this song for years ever since I heard it on the old Night Flights before it sold out. All the people she sings about are authority figures. Mom and dad, the judge, the pilot, the postman. The postman might be a stretch, but I think it is authority figures to a child. |
