U2 – New York Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"I hit an iceberg in my life You know I'm still afloat You lose your balance, lose your wife In the queue for the lifeboat You better put the women and children first But you've got an unquenchable thirst for New York" This part is clearly referring to the Titanic... all those people who wanted something better in their lives, who traveled across the Atlantic and drowned when the iceberg was hit. I like the iceberg metaphor for our problems... but rather than thinking that there are only a few lifeboats available for women and children, we have to realize that there is always a lifeboat waiting if we know who we're praying to. |

totally agree on the "blue" part! |

Honestly, I think Regina sneeks some kind of a religious reference into almost all her songs.. sometimes they're just clearer to find than other times. |

Although I have not read anything but the Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and what you have quoted above, I do agree with you. Whenever I listened to this song I was reminded of the beauty of our planet, colors and imagery- how well everything fits together. But as of a few minutes ago, I now see the message of the song as a suicidal one. Obviously, the Bell Jar was depressing and so I can connect to your "blue" references. The title itself "blue lips" makes me think of death. Nobody has blue lips unless they're freezing or dying. And let's not forget that feeling blue describes depression. Anyway, I'm glad you posted this up, it helps me see the song just a bit differently. :) |
Silversun Pickups – Catch and Release Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Agreed on the virgin part. The guy is surprised how easily she gave in. "Catch and release"... he goes through girls in a snap and moves on. I don't see much of a reference to drugs. "Just get excited 'cause you're giving it" might as well be the guy trying to get her to appreciate their love-making more. He's experienced, unlike her, and shows her that. He tells her that things will never be the same and how the "wind in the hair will feel differently". Mostly, he is just underlining how easy it was to lure her into the hookup. He might have been looking for a challenge... someone who wasn't so easy to catch. |
