Cliff Richard – Summer Holiday Lyrics

Aight is right. Watch the movie, both Cliff and Melvyn Hayes are clearly out of it in nearly every scene. And don't even get me started on 'Mondo Bongo'. It was all downhill after that. |

Cliff Richard – The Day I Met Marie Lyrics

Yet another barely disguised song about skag from the man himself. And he's got everyone thinking he's been playing f**king tennis for the past 40 years!
Cliff's not even the guys real name! THINK ABOUT IT PEOPLE.... |

Very similar in theme to The Boomtown Rats "Don't believe what you read"
Both songs are, also similarly, utter shite. |

Jeff Buckley – Lilac Wine Lyrics

I agree with the above interpretation. Many people seem to think alkies lead barren, pointless lives. This song helps to explain that alcoholics know that "real life is paler, duller and contains less potential for unexpected delirium." (Nick Hornby, Fever Pitch.)
The price for this can be loss of family, friends, possesions and so on. So, the big question is - is it worth the price? Sometimes it is.

The Boomtown Rats – Rat Trap Lyrics

The guitarist now trains dogs. True story, he is on 'Over the rainbow' on the BBC, looking for a dog to play the part of Toto.
Somehow, this is even worse than when I found out that Jeffrey off Rainbow was working as a shelf stacker in a supermarket.

I used to really like this girl years ago, and she went off with a bloke who had a mustache.
I think that this is what this song is about. |

2nd saddest song, actually. "Billy don't be a hero" by Paper Lace is technically 4% sadder than this when measured using Gilzean's equilibrium under laboratory conditions. Chinny.

The Stone Roses – She Bangs The Drums Lyrics

I used to really fancy a girl at college. Didn't see her for a while and thought she had left. On day she walked into the canteen and I swear I heard this song playing. Problem is this was in 1984, years before the song was even written. Perhaps when a song is this good it has always just sort of been there anyway, in the fabric of the universe,or something.
She said "No", by the way.

Just a theory.
If Richie Edwards had written the line "What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know it's mine" people might be comparing it favourably with the Manics line " I know I believe in nothing, but it is my nothing."
He can't tell you what he sees, he daren't, because he sees only a void, nothing. And why? Because "it's mine" ie; it is all his own doing, he has created this situation, he deserves it and he knows he does.
Then again, it could just be about whacking off, I suppose. |

Stiff Little Fingers – Silver Lining Lyrics

Recorded version has a horn section in an attempt to make it sound like a Motown song, just doesn't sound right to me. Sounds very 80's Motown Junk.
Check out a live version - guitars instead of horns - classic SLF. |

Stiff Little Fingers – At The Edge Lyrics

In 1980 or so I was in danger of becoming a heavy rock/metal fan. Denim jacket, patches, all that stuff. Me and my mates (all heavies) spent most of our time discussing guitar solo's, and who was the fastest etc;
Going through my old records one day I smiled when I saw At The Edge. I had moved on to 'serious' music by then and played it to remind me of how much I had moved on. By the end of the song I realised the error of my ways. F**king GREAT SONG. F**king GREAT BAND.
By the end of that day the dustbin contained a denim jacket and several broken Judas Priest albums.
SLF saved my life. Thanks Fellas. |

Joy Division – Twenty Four Hours Lyrics

I always thought this was the best track on the 2nd album, yet I see no comments upto now.
They used it in the film Control, but unless I was more drunk than I thought, Ian Curtis is shown writing the song the evening before he dies. In which case he would have had to record the vocals after his death, which I don't think he did. |

Billy Bragg – The Only One Lyrics

No comments on this as well, Blimey!
Top song all round but the way Billy sings the "oooh" after the word lather is, for my money, one of the saddest and most moving things I have ever heard in a song.
It's weird because I don't think he has the best singing voice, yet when he sings songs like this and St Swithin's Day etc; they sound so genuine. If he sang like Michael Buble or something they just wouldn't work. |

Billy Bragg – Lovers Town Revisited Lyrics

Hard to believe nobody has commented on this one yet, one of my faves. The first time I heard the opening chords on Life's a riot I couldn't believe how great that guitar sounded, it still sounds great today. The simplicity of guitar and voice worked so well.
Not as keen on his newer stuff with a full band though. Vegetable rights and peace! |
