I agree!! i thought no one would see the song that way. i think it talks about alienating to the point you can't even recognize yourself anymore. in a sort of dream-like way he's facing his own fears and sides to himself he thought had dissapeared long ago.he blames himself for being the man who ripped his world appart. then he comes to face not only parts of him but his entire being is empty (We must have died alone, a long long time ago)for he is nothing but the sum of everything he once was that now he's not. then who is he? he lack of meaning, the sense of death and loss caused by the many parts of himself he has lost in the way lead him to the point where he doesn't feel a person anymore. the nirvana version gives me chills every time i hear it. there's just something in kurt's way of singing it that feels mindblowing. orgasmic. no words to describe it. |

can no one really get the song??! funny you think about twilight or new moon when you read it! it's cleearlyy about his thoughts about relationships, how he imagines things ending befor they even begin ( you'll learn to hate me while you still call me baby, so save yourself by not doing it all together, "save your soul before you are too far gone"), a deep felt sorrow about the reality about relationships: you always end up alone even when you are with that someone ( "i should never think what's in your heart, what's in our home") it's better not to question and still he can't force himself to see things as other people see it though it would definetely be better.. i adoooree this song! |

| i don't want to sound nerdish but even intentionally trying to be abzurd and make no sense gives sense to the lyrics..it's a very romantic ( in the sense that implies one considering an outcast from the rest of the world, the denial of reason or logic in the making of the song), nostalgic song. i can feel the melancholy of wanting to live young forever, and knowing it isn't possible, every time i hear it. he got high to live the moment and escape from his thoughts but even that wasn't enough to leave the sadness apart. if you ever were high, you know it's not a real gettaway but an exageration of feelings.. | |

i agree muuchh moree with your theory. it's much more profund than a matter of loosing his virginity or not, a guy would never regret that foor suree. yet i think the "can't i get back my lonely life" part means, in his head, even breaking up with her won't give him his single/lonely life back because (even though the relationship isn't working) he'd still miss the company or have some kind of regret for letting her go (that's why they are trapped in a "stupid ass game" because he has feelings for her, but sometimes even caring about someone is not enough to make things work).. california is maybe his image of good-single times |

| i do not think this song was written about nything in particular, but about a mood in general. about his depressed view about life in general. he aapologises for everything he's not, for everything he is, for not being "easily amused" ( he's lost interest in life though he wishes he hadn't). Then "in the sun i feel as one, in the sun marry, burry" even though he sun might "see/find/make him" happy it's the same sun that one day will see him burried...there's no meaning to life.. | |
